"Nikonians Academy Yosemite Spring Workshop Round-Up!!!"

Morro Bay, US

Hello everyone! Workshop instructor Michael Mariant here to provide a round-up of the Nikonian Academy Workshop in Yosemite for the Spring season, from May 14 - 17, 1009.

Nice weather prevailed over the four days we were in Yosemite, with sunny skies and occasional clouds. (The weather was certainly on our side as the days following our trip had numerous thunderstorms and heavy cloud cover that didn't clear!)

We focused greatly on the stunning waterfalls and roaring rivers that were at peak flow from the spring snow melt. And our timing was perfect as the dogwoods were in full bloom in the valley, providing wonderful contrast.

Mixed in throughout the four days was instruction in composition, exposure, lighting, color balance, filters, and landscape photography techniques (such as layering and modified exposure) along with the thought approach to landscape photography. Not to mention a Star Trails Astrophotography exercise after sunset using the towering valley walls to frame the night sky.

Workshop attendees have already started posting their photos in the gallery, located at:

http://images.nikonians.org/galleries/showgallery.php/cat/9581

And they will begin to post their thoughts and reflections here on this forum.

Up next on the Landscape Workshops' schedule is California's Eastern Sierra & The Owens Valley, a hidden photographer's gem held dear to all landscape photographers (the late photographer Galen Rowell called this home), from Oct. 15-18, then Death Valley from Nov. 11-15, both now available for sign-ups on the Nikonian Academy web site. But book quickly as, in the past, both will sell-out fast.

Also to be added soon is an additional Yosemite in the Fall; watch for its posting later this month.

See you in the outdoors!

Michael

Michael,

Great workshop, more to follow. During the workshop you indicated that you would provide a final agenda/list of photo sites we visited. I want to make sure that I tag the location of all of my images. Most of my images have GPS data, but for a few it is missing.

Dave,

Yes, I will be emailing everyone the updated workshop schedule so you can coordinate the locations to the images' time stamp. Look for it later this week!

Rob,

Eastern Sierra is almost just next door compared with here in NJ. Unfortunately, I am not working part time in Boulder anymore. You did upload some great images from this trip.

Michael.

Four great days. Already uploaded some of my shots to the gallery.
Would have been nice though if there had been time to evaluate each days shooting, one or two pictures, different author each day, together.

I really would like to come back in the fall!

Jens

Jens,

If you come back in the fall for the Yosemite workshop, the Lounge building will have been finished from its reconstructive project (that was the building under construction next to the pizza deck) and we can once again have the post-lunch review and critique of the morning and previous evening's images!

It was great having you there, especially since you came all the way from Denmark!!! I've really enjoyed looking at your photos in the gallery. Great images!

Hello,
The trip to Yosemite was fantastic. Great educational experience and great people to hang out with. Thank's Michael, for the valuable advice, encouragement, and patience. Yosemite is more amazing than I realized. The only drag was when my tripod tipped forward and my camera took a header into the river at the covered bridge location. I am very fortunate that Nikon makes great stuff because my D200 was working like a champ the following morning.
I am still busy sorting though all of my photos. I have a few posted on my bradley pharis gallery. Check em out if you get a chance. I am currently working on a musical slideshow. I might put it on you tube, but it's not ready yet.
I hope to go on more photography adventures in the future. Happy shooting everyone, and thanks again to Dave for carting my ass around Yosemite in your Range Rover.
Peace, Brad
