"Different problem with Nikon Capture Editor and Control"

Pittsburgh, US

I just got a D70 today and installed Capture editor and Control along with the drivers etc.. eventually everything on the cd.

The problem is when I open Control with the camera connected via USB and turned on the software reports it can not find a camera connected.

Frustrated I uninstalled all my software from my other camera, uninstalled all nikon software, removed all references to nikon software from the registry , rebooted and reinstalled all nikon software and the driver.

Control still does the same thing. So I shot a few shots in raw mode to take my mind off things and opened them in Editor only to find it shows no image whatsoever. It gives the image information, camera settings , etc.. but has no image. Opening a jpeg or tiff with editor does the same thing.

Photoshop on the other hand opens them fine but does not give me the control over the files that Editor seems to.

Has anyone else ever experiences this problem? Could it not be SP2 related?

I'm thoroughly frustrated. I really prefer shooting in raw mode, and was looking forward to using Control but nothing seems to be working.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Dave

Update:

Well I was able to get the Control software working by changing the USB setting on the camera. Unfortunently even after uninstalling SP2 and all nikon software .. again .. and reinstalling all nikon software I am still unable to view anything using the editor.

Has anyone had this problem? Is it a conflict with another piece of software perhaps?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Btw -- the software worked fine on my win98 computer with no imaging software but Nikon installed.

Thanks again,

Dave

Since no other answers...

I've installed it on XP SP1 without trouble on two different machines. I installed it with a lot of fooling around on Windows 2003 but never got the capture camera control or transfer to work, but the editor worked just fine in all environments I tried.

You need to go into the setup menu in your camera, navigate to the USB submenu and change the USB value to PTP instead of Mass Storage.

Well, I was able to get Control to work, and was able to get capture to work on a fresh install of WindowsXP SP1 .

As of last night editor was working great. This morning I installed Yahoo messenger on that computer, only to have Editor stop working again ( on the fresh XP SP1 install ).

Again , no picture, just white where the picture should be. I can zoom in on the white, it gives me photo information, all as though the picture were actually there. Only problem is all I can see is white

Talk about frustrating !! I really am not about to reinstall windows AGAIN. I tried uninstalling Yahoo and reinstalling Capture but with no luck.

Does Nikon View work including the display? How about the Nikon Editor? All images or just NEF's (if jsut the latter some problem int he plugin?).

I've put View and Capture now on three machines (well, two machines, one reinstall) and had no problems like that at all.

Nikon View works fine. Editor still, even after reinstall and installing NView , does not show the picture. As I said it gives all the picture info, including camera info for NEF's.

It doesn't show any pictures of any type , the only thing I can think that I changed is installing Yahoo. I don't get it. Maybe I can try removing all references to yahoo from the registry, but I'm not sure what it would have to do with Editor ???

Fascinating. It really sounds like something got overwritten, but I'm surprised a reinstall didn't fix it, and if it didn't I wonder if even uninstalling yahoo and reinstalling view would. Some rendering DLL or such.

It's unfortunate that Windows (you are on windows?) is still so vulnerable to badly designed software, where one program stomps on another. And some do it on purpose, to ensure you use THEIR network or their software or see their ads. We banned AOL entirely from our corporate network for that reason, it just made too big a mess of network setups when you installed it.

Could it be something else? Virus stuff up to date, ad and scumware cleared off? Make sure all your graphics adapter stuff is normal - I don't know if Nikon uses directx or any of the fancy stuff, but it might be worth exploring your graphics control software and make sure something weird or unusual isn't set, or refresh its driver.

You might also download something like Irfanview -- it's my favorite freebe viewer and they do have a NEF viewer. The point being that if it fails as well (since it uses none of Nikon's stuff) you know that something fundamental in your PC's rendering system is broken.

I've had good luck getting responses from nikon technical support. I've had bad luck getting useful responses, but it might be worth asking them.

Sorry... basically a long winded "no idea".

Well, I played around a bit with Regmon and found out it was the driver for my Proview Pure Flat 777 17" monitor that was causing a problem. I rolled back to the default windows PNP driver and its working fine again.

Thanks for all the help folks, and I hope this helps someone else.
