A very bad week
Dear colleagues, I have had a very bad week. My captureNX2 software started issuing error messages that hours with the Geek Squad and Nikon techies have failed to resolve. I waited five hours for the level 3 Nikon guy to call me and he didn't. I have a cold. I downloaded the new D version Nikon software and found it not nearly as good as the NX2, although I will try to muster the strength to try to learn it. But, maybe it is time to try something new? So, may I ask a favor--can someone recommend the single or combined software package that will allow me to take the raw images acquired with my D7100 and make them into spectacular jpegs? Even ordinary jpegs. And maybe a book that I can use to help unfold the mysteries of new stuff. I know I sound like a whimp. I am a whimp. It took me a hour to figure out change the time on my car's clock: " go to my car setting, scroll down to internal systems control, scroll down to manual adjustment, find the button to push to make the hour hand move backward...." I know you guys can help, I have read your foum entrees. The holidays are coming. A few sentences od advice! Thanks and Happy Holidays. Stephen

mklass Nikonian since 08th Dec 2006Sat 15-Nov-14 08:49 AMSorry to hear about your frustrations, Stephen. Having to deal with NIkon support is often a recepie for increasing your frustrations, not reducing them.
Have you tried doing a system restore back to a date when you know CNX2 was working?
Nikon's decision to no longer support and develop CNX2 has driven a lot of people to other software. Lightroom is the virtual standard these days, and it is pretty easy to learn with a few tutorials. Photoshop Elements is another good option, and of course, the full version of Photoshop is another option, but with a steeper, and longer, learning curve.
Have you tried just using Nikon View NX2? Many people find that to be all they need, and other people find it limiting, but it is free and is the only software option, other than CNX, that will read all of your Nikon camera setting and apply then to your NEF files.

Thanks for your sympathy Mick, I have another thread going about the continuing problems and, if Nikon ever gets back to me, I will look at the restore point. I love Viewnx2 as a way to organize and searching but the editing is too limited. I really love the control point technology of CNX2 and want to have that available to me in whatever new software I use. How could Nikon not include it is XD!!? I think Photoshop Elements 13 can do what I want in this regard although by a different approach. It looks like it can work with Raw files too but you raise a question in my mind about reading the camera settings. If I use the Photoshop Raw processing this won't happen? Maybe if I use ViewNX2 first then use Photoshop Elements the settings would convey? Thanks again. S-

mklass Nikonian since 08th Dec 2006Sat 15-Nov-14 11:37 AMNo software reads the Nikon camera settings in NEF files except CNX and VNX. You can bake those setting into a TIF or JPG by exporting from CNX or VNX, but then you can no longer edit the settings directly.
If you want some semblance of Control Point technology, get LR or PS and the Nik plug in collection. However, even if you use those, you don't get the non-destructive re-editing capability that you have in CNX2.

Thanks again Mick, I really don't understand how much control I am losing. For instance, I have been adjusting the camera settings--exp comp, sharpening, etc--the first go around to get the RAW image as close to reality as possible. Then I play around with selective changes using control points to bring out aspects of the image I feel are important. Can't I also do this by using vnx2 for the first part and PSE for the second part. Yes, the camera settings will be baked in after part 1 but how bad can that be for an amateur? If necessary I can start over with my original RAW image. I am not a professional who has to work with so many images that this is impossible. Another confusion for me is that the PSE 13 reads NEF files, which implies that it is saving the camera settings. So, maybe the RAW processor in PSE 13 does use the camera settings? I expect I am really behind the learning curve here so foregive me. Thanks Stephen-

mklass Nikonian since 08th Dec 2006Sat 15-Nov-14 04:27 PMNo raw processor, except CNX and VNX uses the camera settings, except White Balance.
PSE does not have control points. The only software wiht control points is Nik's plug-ins, as it is their proprietary technology. NIkon licensed this for a while, but that is gone (and so is CNX2).
LR/PS/ACR use some approximations for camera profiles. And you can tweak them and even save the modified versions as new profiles.
Except for the Nikon software, no software saves any changes made to NEF, except as a sidecar file that can only be read by the software that created it or something similar. (VNX/CNX-D or ACR/PS/LR.)
My suggestion would be to do a trial version of LR and see if you like it. Then go for teh Nik Complete Collection of Plug-ins. That will be as close as you are going to get to what you are used to.
You can thank Nikon for screwing up CNX2, in more ways than one.

Hello all, I started watching tutorials about Lightroom and am impressed that it can do much, if not all, of the things CaptureNX2 is capable of doing, including control points. See Anthony Morganti Utubes for instance. So, unless Nikon returns my call!!!! And fixes the problem I am leaving the Nikon building. It is very sad for me to say but Nikon does not seem to do tech support well. The written instructions are confusing and lead me nowhere and the follow up stinks. I waited hours for a scheduled call to learn the guy went home for the day when I checked on him. Awful. Anyway, the good news is winter is coming and I am retired with the time to learn something new. My cold is gone too. Regards Stephen
