"Lightroom 2 file management question on a Mac......"

Aspen, US

I have a laptop and the hard drive is getting full. I would like to move my photos to an external hard drive that I just purchased.
How do I move the files within my Lightroom 2 catalog so that Lightroom knows the photos are now in my external hard drive?
How do you travel with Lightroom? My laptop is my main computer and I would like to import my photos at the end of the day to sort them and see my mistakes and look for ways to improve my keepers. My external hard drive is a nice one that will not travel so well. This is where I would like to keep my photos when I get home but I would like Lightroom to see the photos after I move them off my internal hard drive after they have been imported to Lightroom. So how do I do this? Any suggestions for a better work flow?
A follow up to this question is how do I transfer a file full of photos off my external hard drive to my computers internal hard drive so I can do more developing? Thanks for your help!

Your question is complicated and has many parts. I can summarize a course of action which will answer many of your questions:
Your system provides no back up of data. You need to import data from camera into Lightroom, then when done with lightroom. export to a different folder and a back up device or media (DVD for example). Many people back up in DNG or Raw format but I leave that untouched here.
By backing up frequently you avoid filling up your drive.

"A follow up to this question is how do I transfer a file full of photos off my external hard drive to my computers internal hard drive so I can do more developing? " Back up when you get home onto a DVD or second hard drive.

Remember with hard drives, its not if they will fail but when they fail. So redundant backups are a must in my opinion.

I think you should spend some time on this website:

The folks there are very helpful and friendly. With a little searching I think you'll find the answers to all these questions (and more).
