"Zipping TIFF files for storage -good or bad idea?"

Hello guys!

Is it acceptable/advisable to Zip (or Rar) TIFF files in order to store them?

Do you lose any of the file information by doing that?

Do you degrade the file by Zipping, storing and then Unzipping it?

I hate to be able to store only 5 125MB TIFFs on one CD-R 700MB.

I would love to hear how you guys store your TIFFs. What media do you use?

Thank you.

Poppins

There is no degradation (zip compression is not lossy, contrary to jpeg for example), but older software cannot open the files. Opening large files is also noticeably slower. I use it for very large scanned files which I store on DVD+R since the space gain is significant.

Have you given thought to uzing LZW compression in your files? Most file viewers and editors can open it, it's lossless, and it saves you the extra step of zipping/unzipping.

Hello Victor,

Where can I find this LZW compression program?

I'm not aware of any way to get it as a "free-standing" program, but most image-handling software has it as an option. If you use Photoshop, it's presented as an option when you save a tiff file.

Be careful with LZW. In some instances, it will make your files larger. It is implemented in Photoshop and shows as an option when you save tiff files.

I might avoid this LZW compression alltogather.

Thank you for the warning though.

Give it a try. There was a know isuue in an older version of Photoshop (I think 6) that caused a lot of problems, including bloating the file size. There might have been a patch for it, but it's fixed in v7 and presumably "8".

I had the bloating problem with LZW in Photoshop 7.0.1.
