I think the master of snowflake photography seems to be Don Komarechka who is quite active on Google+, and who is also teaching workshops, writing a book, and posting a lot of his snowflake shots on Google+ as well.

Remarkable stuff.

Komarechka's web site is here. He's a Canadian. He's also a regular guest on the TWiP (This Week in Photography) podcast.

Komarechka has independently developed quite a range of techniques to capture individual snowflakes, mount them, suspend them, light them, etc., etc., etc., in order to get the remarkable shots he regularly publishes. Some of the shots are absolute head-scratchers because without an explanation from him it's far from obvious how he made the shots.
