It's part of a new program starting at Nikonians.

Have a look at this thread.

Thanks for the link Anthony.

It will be really interesting to see how both features work out. It might also be interesting to add a length-limited explanation to the Recommended Member click so that people who are making the recommendation can offer a brief explanation about why they're doing so. Might involve too much site programming aggravation though.

Recommend for what? a knighthood?

Is there a prize for the most clicks? Or does someone who isn't recommended get black balled next time membership is up for renewal?

Does it work both ways:

I would like to recommend this member as his posts are valuable and insightful

or

I would recommend you ignore anything this member says...

Hummmmmm

D2Xs + AF20-35mm f2.8 + AF35-70mm f2.8 + AF80-200mm f2.8

or

I've copy/pasted it for members to access it a bit easier:

Want to know who’s tech savviest? Who’s a photo guru? Which articles are hot to read?

The Nikonians ask, and we give! There are new features that allow users to see, who’s recommended in the community, who’s mastered the art and science of photography, and what the current hot topics are. How, you ask?

“Recommend Member”
Now, you can see which of your fellow Nikonians is recommended in the community! We’d like to share recognition among our neighboring Nikonians for their support, wealth of knowledge and know-how. In a way, this acts as a “go-to” person, for having factual and substantial information in our forums/comments. Now, you may easily recommend a member in the Nikonians Community, simply by clicking on the link: “Recommend Member” in the forum and topic of your choice. For further details, please refer to our FAQ’s, for more step-by-step information on this.

“Rate Topic”
When entering into the forums, and reading up on your favourite topics, whether old or new, you will find the option to, “Rate this Topic”, on the top right hand side of your topic to read. A simple drop down menu labeled: “Rate this topic” allows you, the user, to express your thoughts about the topic in a numbered scale from 1-5, five being a Must Read. Through this, users are able to engage whether or not this topic was useful, inspiring and insightful. For further details, please refer to our FAQ’s, for more step-by-step information on this.

“Ribbons”
Ribbons are signs of recognitions. Much like, a badge of pride you pin to your chest after your win the potato sack race – only in this case, you have it pinned to your username! They are awarded to members in the Nikonians Community for their high skill levels of expertise and on-going contributions of sharing, learning, and inspiring. These are members who have helped us make Nikonians, what it is today. For further details, please refer to our FAQ's, for more information.

So, if I have a question regarding white balance, or sharpening techniques, or exposure how do I know who's the guru, tech savviest, or ? to answer my question?

Do each of the "Recommended Members" have a list of topic(s) they are expert in? Is/will this list be made available.

Example, I have a need to print an image. I need some guidance on making reasonably sure the printed image will come out as I see it on my calibrated monitor. Which Recommended Member do I go to?

I could see where these gurus and savviest could be overwhelmed by numerous queries pertaining to their expertise.

Hmmmm.

Or am I not understanding this?

Hi!

IMHO that's not the way it should go: you don't just "go to" a member here and ask your question. Suppose I'm one of the printing gurus in your example. But I'm also plenty of other things in life, and I would indeed prefer coming to the forum to answer a question rather than having mails and PMs rained on me by members asking the same question about 240 vs 300 dpi separately!

Nikonians is a list of forums: you find the one that is appropriate, search for a preceding question-and-answer thread, and if not found ask your question. Then you use the ribbon and recommendation system to know who's answering. Isn't life beautiful?

Thanks for responding Olivier. I agree, that's the way it should go so as not to rain mails and PMs on knowledgeable members.

It is the same, only different. Now those that are not familiar with the knowledge and skills of the existing members (read new members) has some measuring tool to apply when considering their query responses.

OK, works for me. However, I must admit that, after my time spent with Nikonians, I already hold a number of Nikonians in high esteem because of their knowledge, skills, and willingness to help others, who have helped me in my quest to become a better photographer.

Life IS beautiful by gosh.

Thanks again,

Good question - thank you for saving me the trouble of asking.

The recommended member and ribbons ideas seem sound. I do have a few reservations about the rating posts initiative. I hope it does not lead to disputes and ill feeling, or disccourage less confident members from posting.

Rating a post should be the reaction to the help it provided in sharing, learning, inspiring.
"This was most helpful for me."
"For me" (as a poster or reader) is key.

One must always keep in mind that what was a helpful revelation for someone may not have been for another.

In the end, topic ratings should be a measure of how helpful a topic has been to members and it may have little or nothing to do with who was the original poster and more with the answers provided.

The first question should ideally be "Will it be helpful for other members that I rate this topic?"

Hi Art,

Are you trying “Rate a Topic”?

If so, the rating that you choose will not show up until at least 5 people choose to rate the topic. Then the topic rating will show up, in the forum of gold stars, in the far right side of the topics list.

If you look in the wildlife forum you will see that one topic (Kayaking questions) has 5 stars in the right hand column.

If you have rated a topic it may take a while before anyone else chooses to rate it.

Seems to work quite well for everyone. A couple of things are a tiny bit counterintuitive though. Dave's explanation is correct or course. Read the brief Rate This Topic FAQ here. Everything is explained clearly.

You may be onto something Art. You do have a "Recommend Member" after your post number. I don't see it after my own post number. I'm guessing, based on your question, that you can't see it after your post number?

Personally, I'm OK without it.

When I first saw this new feature, I thought, "Well what does that have to do with anything, seems interesting, and how does it help our community?" I guess, I have finally figured it out, in part, with the help of reading this thread. It really has to do with those forum areas where there is in-depth discussion of equipment, software, or photo critiques, etc. usage and we recommend someone as helpful in answering the questions raised or offering valuable insight in to how to improve an image, etc..

Beyond that element of recognition (for is that what this really is?), does it by forum topics suggest where and on what topics those "experts or helpful members" are so that we can find them and their response to topics rather then creating a new inquiry?

Other then recognition, I am not sure how it really help members find those who can be of help and where to find on a specific topic as mentioned in the Nikonian Blog which said about this new topic "...who’s tech savviest? Who’s a photo guru? Which articles are hot to read?"

So my question is, with this feature, where do you start; where do I go to find those tech savviest photo gurus with hot topics to read?" Just wondering how it helps us.

Kind of cool...I got a recommendation and sure would like to know more about that and what I did to earn it.

I wanted to wait a couple of weeks to comment, but in my opinion this is the equivalent of a beauty contest that has gone bad.

Who thought this up? I'm generally not a "finger pointer," but this is the most stupid thing that I have ever seen. How many members do we have here? Assuming that we are more than a thousand or so, then how come the two Brians only have about thirty recommendations each, or less? I mean thirty for Brian Tilley and thirty for Brian Wong? That's it? Come on, they deserve hundreds if not thousands, or more.

I, personally, have recommended a member or two just so that they don't feel bad or left out.

I also note that neither of the above-named contestants have recommended anyone else to be a "recommended member," so I would take that to mean that either they don't approve of this beauty contest or else neither believes that anyone else should be a recommended member. Which is it?

I just recommended both and i encourage each of you to do the same so that anyone looking in on this site doesn't think that the thousands of us, or more, don't have at least a few recommended members. After all, we established this beauty contest, so the least that we can do is to select a couple of beauties.

jP

Edit: Sorry, but I just have to go on and on about this stupid "recommended member" stupidity. I had learned an incredible amount from Robsb, but I'm only one of two people who have recommended him. To hold this recommendation system out as something that anyone should use when evaluating advice is just plain "stupid" in my humble option. I don't remember, did I use the word "stupid.? There are so many of you out there who have contributed your knowledge and advice but don't do it on a daily basis, so effectively you are classified as "not recommended" merely by the fact that you are not a "recommended member." Now, I ask, is this just plain stupid, or what?

Again, although not usually a finger pointer, I would like to know who thought this stupid thing up.

jP

Wait! Another edit:

Vote for me and I promise a D4 in every pot. Also included will be two XQD 128 gb cards and a USB 3 reader. As we say in Chicago, vote early and vote often.

Howard and Ken,

Do you fully understand the consequences of your irrevocable, and what I consider to be irresponsible, actions?

You have each, singlehandedly, turned the late night ravings of a slightly impaired, but jovial, Nikonian into what now will be considered "the truth" by all who visit, what I like to call, the Nikonian Kingdom. Henceforth, all who read the words of a twice recommended Nikonian will have little choice but to accept them without query.

It is my sincere hope and desire that each of you can live with the consequences of your actions and will some day, once again, be able to hold your heads high. Let us all think twice before we click twice.

Forsooth thou cunning knave. Thou hast duped and deceived us into our base endeavours, and verily we shall forever more think twice, nay, thrice ere we follow thy cunning deceptions. So I say only through thinking thrice shall we think so thoroughly thoughtfully (hmmm - I seem to be developing a lisp). Verily am I then merely a humble vaudevillian veteran cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. Recommended not shall you be henceforth jP.

Now . . . where's the Undo Recommended Member key? Meh! Yet another problem.

Just start recommending every member and dilute the "value" of being "recommended".

Done, Sir Mike. Your recommendation has been entered. But, If you do not feel worthy of this honor then you may petition the powers that be and request that this recommendation be nullified and that your name be stricken from the recommended list by the nominating member.

Um . . . sure, yeah jP. Like, whatever. You know, like, us R19's sometimes like to slum with R2's from time to time.

A guy I used to talk to all the time is an R26 now. He won't answer my PMs anymore; told me that I was just a 19, so we couldn't still be friends. Jerk.

I am insignificant. I am unworthy. I am . . . an R19.

Thanks Scotty. Now I'm an R3.

What do you mean R26? I think you meant R32 right? How high does this R# thing go?

If we were to sort this Recommend thing in a descending order jp and
I would be so far down as to need oxygen fed to us to sustain life. Agitator not so far but still not as elite (sorry Howard).

According to the boss, R32, we, the lower echelons (R10 and below?), are know-nothings. We don't "do anything for the community", we don't provide "friendly and reliable posts". Hey! we're not believable, we "don't know what we are saying" and will chastise or make fun of you or your problem when the moderators are at rest. God save the moderators.

Doesn't matter that we, the lower echelon, have 10, 20 ,30+ years in the photographic community or as people really trying to improve our craft. That we've been there, done that with 35mm film, color and B&W, laboring in darkrooms. Where we tried to be Ansel Adams like, tried to be the best we could be. And, in so doing these things, many of us became very, very knowledgeable in the art and craft of photography and understand the relationship of ISO, f-stop, and shutter speed. Have a grasp on composition or what really looks good to us. Know how light and dark, in color or B&W, interact. How light and shadows can be mysterious and captivating. How B&W prints can have a more aesthetic appeal than color.

Now we are embracing the digital world and striving to transition to the world of the new technology away from the world that we knew. To apply what we have learned, in the chemical world, to the new digital world and new processing techniques to create the best images we can. Giving to those, that ask, the things we have learned in the old and new worlds of photography.

But, because we only rise to a R2 or R3 or perhaps even R4 maybe, we of the lower echelon, we who are most like the majority of the Nikonians memberships, are not worthy. Even though, EVEN THOUGH, we make up the bulk of the success of this .org.

As less recommended as we, the lower echelon are, we are not worthy. Neophytes, look for a higher R#, the elite, to be sure that you are getting the best advise, the best critique, the best technical advise. Uh, huh, maybe.

I, for one, only look forward to the critique of my images by my peers who look and simply respond to how they feel on looking at my photos. To those that can answer questions that will help in the improvement of my skills. To answer my questions, like why do I need a ball-head? Really?

I don't look for the elite, I look for heartfelt, the tried and true, I look for real suggestions on improvement of my skills, maybe how I could improve the composition. I look for real critique from my peers. I look for true, base feelings of my work. Whether good or bad. No pain, no gain.

To those that ask my opinion of their work I will give the same. How I really feel, how their submission(s) affect me. What I would do to improve it. Or maybe just say it's great as is.

Sorry elitist R5 and above, you're not in my peer group. Even though you may have credentials up the ying-yang, you don't count.

I might add, I'm an R2. Not that high by choice but by whimsy I believe. While I really like what Nighthawk5169 (is there really 5,168 other Nighthawks?) and jpFoto have done I need to renounce my Recommend-hood and go back to zero. As in 0, nada.

I just want responses to my presentations, from those that would care to respond. Irregardless of ones standing. I don't care what your R# is or even if you have one. Be sincere, be succinct, and be honest. I can take it. Really. It's the only way I, or anyone willing for a true critique of their work, will improve.

Flying magazine had, as its last column, "Back to Basics", where there was a column on the basics of flying. Stick and Rudder in a plain ol' airplane. No jets, no high performance aircraft, no spacecraft, just basic flying techniques. I think Nikonians needs to go back to basics. To help people with their new cameras looking for answers.

I'm ready, ask me anything, and I'll refer them to R32. (not really, I'll try to answer their questions. At least refer them to someone who I think may know the answer.)

That's all really nice and whatnot Ken. Now, please go to the other room and sit at the kiddies table with the other R2 & R3's. My goodness me - such talk about peers and things from an R2. What's the world coming to!?

Good points all-around you did make I think. Rankings of any kind tend to make people forget about or disregard all but the input or efforts of the smaller group of those who are top-ranked. It's a classic problem that has been analyzed many times before, and the Nikonians managers did not, I think, pay attention to the historical inequalities resulting from attempts to use rankings within other kinds of social groups. It rarely works as intended.

The initial idea these days, is always resurrected in an effort to juice things up, to add a new component to what managers may feel is a situation which needs some spice, or to help inexperienced members find a straighter path to the sort of advice they're seeking. The problem is that as soon as anyone imposes or even merely offers a ranking system, people actually begin to use it. However, history does show us, too, that the most accurate and active contributors are often among the highest ranked. Also ranked highly are those with the most posts - moderators, managers, owners, the longest standing members, and so on - who are lent high rankings (Recommended clicks) by 'lesser' members who simply regard a post level of 10,000 or more as a sign of authority and value.

After a while though, I think Recommended Member rankings will settle down to reflect only exactly what existing post levels already indicate: active participation, areas of interest, and expertise. So it may be smarter for Nikonians managers to actually mine the data they've got (which members post most often in which forums) to automatically rank members without requiring Recommended Member clicks.

So will some technical question threads in which the participants are all, for example, R2-R8 continue to a conclusion or will some of the OP's of such threads simply ignore the advice and suggestions until an R25 comes along? That's a potential problem.

Will some members who have fewer recommendations than peers here with whom they've always conversed begin to feel denied or left out? For those who laugh at the suggestion, we must remember that Nikonians has evolved in no small way into a significant social network which contains a whole range of attachments for a wide variety of people.

Will some members with high rankings be motivated to continue posting regularly, and will other with high rankings feel unreasonable pressure to post often to maintain a high ranking?

Will new visitors considering membership look at high rankings in a different way than they look at high post levels? Will they feel that high rankings represent individuals who offer the only contributions to which they should pay attention?

I won't hazard any answers to those questions here. I know the answers, but I leave it to the Nikonians managers to learn from experience and then put away things like coarsely conceived ranking/recommended member systems.

All social networks eventually reach the upper limit of their natural growth. Then, managers start panicking when growth slows to a crawl and start coming up with all sorts of 'new' ideas to improve things. Few such ideas ever work. Problem is, at the same time, they ignore all the areas which require a lot of improvement. So if in fact the Nikonians managers feel that growth has slowed (if it has, it's only temporary - we're still in the midst of disastrous global economics after all), there are many other things to improve the bottom line and improve the social and photgraphy knowledge experience for members. For example, the email newsletter needs work to improve conversion rates I'd bet. More paid, online, streaming photography (and lighting, photo editing, etc., etc.) courses should be offered directly through Nikonians.org (perhaps put together by strategic partners with the appropriate expertise?).

There's a lot more, but I'm talking about improving the business status of the site rather than the implementation of what some members may feel is a recommendation system that causes intra-membership rivalry or rancour or derision and only a relatively small amount of approval.

As suspected, after a quick count of recommenders, some of the miscreants in this thread appear to have temporarily skewed the 'rankings'.

I'm not really prepared to spend the time on any attempt at estimating the basis on which members are being recommended. Too hard to tell anyway. At the moment, it appears to correspond with post levels - the more posts an active member had when the Recommended Member feature was implemented, the more recommendations they seem to have now.

If there was an UnRecommend Member function, that would be even more interesting. That would allow anyone who disagrees with the gist(s) of this thread to show their opinion not by posting to the thread but rather by simply retracting a recommendation they'd previously given me.

That brings up another point which might be easy to prove (one way or another) simply by comparing the post levels of recommenders to the post levels of recommendeds. The idea would be to determine how many people with very few posts to their name (e.g., members who joined and paid primarily to obtain information rather than actively engage in thread discussions - which is just fine too), are essentially 'speaking' and contributing simply by clicking recommendations. That's actually a valid way of contributing to Nikonians, subtle though it may be.

Along the line of the Oak Leaf Clusters comment, I think there should be types of recommendations, such as:

-I recommend this person because his posts are always helpful, brief and to the point

-I recommend this person because his posts are very thorough, but may be a slog to read.

-I recommend this person because while totally unrelated to the subject at hand, his posts provide great comic relief in an otherwise acrimonious discussion.

Perhaps we could just designate smilies for each type?

While I was shaving today, (yes, today is a shaving day. Retired guys don't do that every day you know) something occurred to me about f-stops. f/#'s. The higher the f/ number the more that is put in focus, the sharper the image. More depth. More information available. R#'s (Recommended by #) are the same right?. Think about it. The higher the R# the more information, focus, depth, experience, knowledge there is available.

So, R/32, really sharp, deep, full of information. R/19, pretty good still. Sharpness, good depth of field, knowledgable. Then there's the R/nots, R/1's, R/2's, R/3's---. Need critical focus, shallow...trying hard, but good bokeh!

Have a nice weekend!

Ahem . . . allow me to point out, thou being but the merest humble R2, that the highest f/stops actually invite the horrors of focus-softening diffraction and other yuckiness (a technical term don't you know). So, my plucky-but-retired-and-merely-an-R2 friend, those who would strive to aim for high-R, are well-advised to be careful what they wish for. I see blurring and softening in their future (and not just for retired guys). Ahem.

Weep not for me, an R19 though I may be, for with just a few more RM's I too shall begin to blur and diffract. Then shall I vex the Nikonian lords for having cursed me with such a wretched mantle.

I am in your debt, lord R19, for bringing understanding upon me regarding that high f/stops can, indeed, be fraught with danger. One must therefore have a modicum of knowledge so as not to be beguiled by those high R#'s for they may not impart full understanding so one must be able to discern what is truth and what is close to it. Not having ventured to that heady realm, not having experienced the yuck, I knew not of what I spoke.

Weep for you R19, I do not. Aye, with your vision fixed on the realm about you and your sharp wit, you are, indeed, in the prime of your being. You are a wise and learned soul.

Lest I bring forth more untruth to this forum I, a lowly R2, shall refrain form further pronouncements. So, with that, I bid thee farewell and adieu. Perhaps we shall meet again upon another plain.

What have I done? Ere this night abides the dawning, least but not last, I've done nothing of consquence. For not wise is he who carps and mewls in attentive purchase. Only the fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool. Nikon has occasionally given photographers grief going back hundreds of years (verily, 'tis true, and a little known fact young Mick). Shakespeare, for example, was actually a heckuva fine photographer, but he kept running into oil spatter on his sensor (a Nikon A1 - the olde version - if I recall correctly). In his travels though, he found a good camera service shop in Inverness, which is where he came up with the great line, "Out, damned spot! Out, I say! One; two: why, then, ’tis time to do't."

Wow! It's always good to get the real story behind great lines in literature. I always though it had to do with Shakespeare getting sauce on his white shirt during the filming of the Merchant of Venice on one of those Spaghetti Western sets in Hollywood.

Thanks for clearing that up.

(Now how do I get this spot off my shirt??? I know- Photoshop!)

S'aright . . . I know that you know what it means, you know that I know that you know what it means, and I know that you know that I know that you know what it means. Little else matters, and while I know that you know that too, it always helps a bit when one mentions that one knows that one knows.

I just noticed this curious phenomenon in the midst of reading a thread:

Notice how one of the members does not have the option to be recommended. Why is this?

An undeniable paradox: To think that there is any such thing as an absolute rule is at worst naïve, and at best, shortsighted. There is no such thing as an always-true, all context- or situation-salient, absolute rule that always holds true…including this one!

Hi Al,

We have had a few members who ask to opt out of the “Recommend Member” feature.

So, an option has been added to the User Menu, under the Preferences tab members can find the option:

"Participate in user recommendation?
Select "yes" if you wish to recommend other users and allow other users to recommend you."

"no" can be selected.

I read this thread in October (posts 1 – 76). Amusing but not very informative. Then it disappeared and I forgot about it. I’m glad this thread has now been exhumed because it’s time for me to get organized and start issuing recommendations. I usually have a systematic approach to new things, and before starting to recommend members, I’d like to know how you guys draw the line? My problem is that I can hardly think of anyone I’d not recommend. Compared with other forums I visit, such as Adobe/Photoshop and DPReview, this forum has none of the “Read The Funny Manual” posts.

Quote from Nikonians home page: “Now, you may easily recommend a member in the Nikonians Community, simply by clicking on the link … ” That was the easy part. The really difficult question is how *not* to recommend someone?

Another quote: “These are members who have helped us make Nikonians, what it is today.” Well, who is/are the person(s) who made Nikonians what it is? The one who answered the question or the one who raised it in the first place?

Seriously, I know what kind of a person I am. Unless I can invent a scheme by which I can recommend a selected few of this wonderful community, and live with the choices I’ve made, I have two options: either recommend everyone or opt out of the recommendations system.

I have read every post in this thread, including the linked ones, and I am none the wiser.

Best regads, Antero

I don't think that a recommendation should necessarily be a choice based solely on a view of Nikonians.org in general. That, by definition is a selection with only one option - recommend everyone - a Hobson's Choice, in other words (a free choice with only one option). Rather, the recommendations I've made so far have been given to those individuals who've expanded my knowledge about photography or photography technology during the course of a particular thread, or to those individuals whom I've noticed were particularly (accurately) helpful and patient with some other member who was struggling to understand a particular photography concept or the technical solution to a specific problem.

I agree with you about your fundamental point - Nikonians has developed into a very large, helpful and motivated photography community. So to recommend someone, I think it's important to step back from that general opinion and narrow my focus to just those individual members who've been of personal help to me with respect to specific issues. That approach leaves nobody out, because almost all actively posting members have helped someone at some time and will likely do so again. But I only recommend a member who has done for me or another (in a thread I've followed or participated in) something described above. I recommend you consider that approach.

Howard,

I’m sure I tried to post earlier, thanking you for your most sensible advice. But apparently my earlier post was lost in the mail.

Your advice makes perfect sense, basing the recommendations on who has helped or been of interest to me, and not even trying to worry about who has helped the community as a whole. I can live with that.

Happy New Year everyone! It's been an interesting year and I have learned a lot thanks to the Nikonians and your willingness to share and help others. I think I have learned more in 2012 than in the prior years in photography. Looking forward to 2013 and, with your continued help, smoothing out the rough spots in my photography skill sets. I'll never get to photographica nirvana but am looking forward to the trip just the same.

Can I recommend all members to have a safe and sane new years evening. Be careful, don't take chances, we want to see you on the other side of this evening.
