Hey Peter,

As a retired Civil war re-enactor, I appreciate what you have linked to here. It's amazing how strong an interest this period holds as we honor the sesquicentennial.

I have a few books of photos Mathew Brady took after the battle of Gettysburg. Amazing glimpse into the horrors of war. There was a debate at one time whether some of the images were posed (corpses moved together to add more impact to the images). Regardless, I think the images were amazing!

Antietam still ranks as the bloodiest single day of battle in the history of the United States. On that single day we suffered approximately 22,720 casualties (dead and wounded). For a modern-day comparison, on D-Day (6 June 1944) we suffered 6603 casualties. Very sobering, very tragic.

Fascinating - I'd seen many of Brady's portraits before and never heard of him - thanks for the heads up on him.

Interesting figures regarding battles losses. Here in the UK the "bloodiest battle" is supposely Towton - 1461 with 28,000 dead. The worst day for the British Army was the first day of the Battle of the Somme - 66,000 dead or wounded. Have we learnt much since then? Not really...

Alex, those figures for the UK are very sobering indeed. I had no idea as to the enormity of the losses suffered by the British at the Somme.

That was just on the first day... between July and November 1916 the total British casualties on this battle field alone were in the the region of 350,000 men.

Add French and Comonwealth troops to that it grows to 625,000 men.

Add to that German casualties of 465,000 men.

That battle alone resulted in over 1,000,000 men killed or wounded. Both my Grandfathers survived the Somme; how I just don't know...

So will reading of the siege of Leningrad: at least 1.5 million dead..

Several years ago I read a fascinating book on the history of interaction between photography and war. The author made the interesting - and to me convincing - argument that while the work of Brady and his contemporaries was groundbreaking and important, it was limited in effect because the photos could not be distributed to the majority of the population. One had to travel to cities and view them, the author further argued that the first real "photographers war" for the United States was the Spanish American war, because the photographs were so widely distributed.

I would like to say the name of the book is "Shooting War", but take that with a grain of salt: it has been several years.
