"The 100 photos part 2: call for images"

Thank you everyone who has contributed ideas for images on the 100 photos that everyone should take while they learn the art of photography.

Having talked it over with JRP, Nikonians founder, I'd like to ask people to contribute images they've shot which illustrate these. You don't have to have been the contributor of the image.

Here are the guidelines:
1) Please post the image on this thread at decent size: preferably 1,000 pixels largest dimension or higher (up to the maximum limit for posting, naturally)

2) Please tell the story of how you came to capture it

3) Please give the technical details of how you captured it including camera details, placement, lighting, anything else which isn't obvious to a beginner. If you've done post-processing, please say what it is and how to do it if that's important for the shot.

4) There is no guideline 4

We may at some point want to publish a Nikonians '100 shots', so please only submit images that you'd be happy to appear in it. Feel free to submit an image even if someone else has already submitted one on that shot, especially if you've taken quite a different approach to getting it, or the image is quite different in its result.

16 - The shot that looks much better in B&W than in color



The original image was captured in 2008 as I was leaving a collegiate ballroom dance competition. There were some people practicing in the next gym over, so I took a few shots on the way out. The image sat in my archives for a couple of years (I never delete anything). I worked on it in 2010 and considered using it in a photojournalism portfolio, but eventually I decided it wasn't good enough for that purpose. It was also one of my rare attempts at shooting/cropping into a square format. Processed to look like b&w film (Kodak P3200).

This one was the frame taken immediately before it:



I'm torn between the two. They were taken seconds apart, but are very different. They say very different things.

Technical: Nkon D1H.
1/40th @ f/4, ISO 400, aperture priority, 15mm (cropped)
1/30th @ f/4, ISO 400, aperture priority, 15mm (cropped)
Worked on in Adobe CS4, and possibly Nikon Capture NX 2.


An undeniable paradox: To think that there is any such thing as an absolute rule is at worst naïve, and at best, shortsighted. There is no such thing as an always-true, all context- or situation-salient, absolute rule that always holds true…including this one!

Okay I will start.

Number 71: Night shot of a Building, or Cityscape and Number 13: A Night Scene at base ISO

This is a shot of the U.S. Capital Building on a cloudy night.

On vacation to Washington D.C. we decided to go into town specifically to get some night shots of the monuments. At each place I tried a single shot first and then I did a set of images with bracketed exposures thinking I would try some HDR.

I shot from a tripod and used a cable release to eliminate any camera shake or mirror slap vibrations. I set the camera to S mode, ISO-200 and used matrix metering to get my base shutter speed. I then switched to manual and made 5 exposures one stop apart two stops above and two stops below that base shutter speed.

In post processing I combined the 5 exposures using Picturenaut 2.12. The HDR allowed me to bring out some detail on the statue in the foreground and preserve the details at the top of the brightly lit dome.

The lights on the dome were of a different color temp then the lights on the lower part of the building. At one point I adjusted the WB on the building so that it appeared white as it should but I liked the image better with the warm tone on that part of the building even though the dome is bright white.

Number 35: A Silhouette

On the way home from a wildlife shoot I noticed that we were going to have a nice sunset. I had shot this windmill before and thought it would make a nice silhouette against the sun if I could get there in time. I had originally planned to get the sun in the frame but once on site I realized that I only had my Sigma 120-300/f2.8 lens in the car. This created a bit of a compositional challenge that in the end gave me a better shot than I had envisioned. The long lens and the tall corn forced me back to a slight hill just east of the windmill.

I like the effect of the out of focus corn in the foreground compresses against the sharp windmill silhouette. I bracketed my exposure and choose the one with the best tonal values when processing the image.

Number 27: A Bird in Flight

The vast majority of my work is wildlife photography so I have quite a few images of birds in flight. I chose this image because of the challenges involved to capture it. This is probably the favorite of all of my pelican shots and easily in my top 5 bird-in-flight images.

While on an outing at my favorite wildlife venue on a somewhat overcast day saw this large group of pelicans feeding about a quarter mile (about 400 meters) off of the road. They were way too far off to shoot from the car so I decided to see how close I could get on foot. I parked just north east of the birds and walked strait south so that even though I was getting closer to them I was not walking directly in their direction. I covered about half the distance at a normal walking pace. Then I began to move a few steps west and slowed my pace. By now I am walking in a few inches of water and I have turned so that I am making a more direct approach. Once I am close enough for some decent group shots I set up my tripod (Gitzo 5540LS) without extending the legs and got on my knees to start shooting. Each time I took a few shots I would move forward a little bit. I did this until I could see that the group started to notice me and move away. At that point I just settled in and kept shooting and then it started raining.

I set the camera to CH and always shot in short bursts. I used dynamic area AF (21 point) and AF-C with release priority. My metering was set to center-weighted. The camera did a great job with the metering with the overcast skies. These birds are very difficult to expose in bright light.

I wanted to make a more dynamic shot of Neo, my wife's cousin's Jack Russell terrier.

So I asked René to throw the stick in my general direction while I was lying on my belly, and I just let go in CH mode!



D300, 80-400VR, ISO800, f/8, 1/1600 (I wanted the speed, so I bumped up the ISO).

And last for this one: I was on my way to work, and I knew about the jonquils, of course. So I took my camera bag and some plastic bags along it, so I could lay on my belly in the wet grass of the high pastures

24) Self portrait



Self portraits are difficult because you have to get the focus on the eyes, but your eyes aren't there while you're trying to focus it. In the past I've used OnOne's DSLR Remote on the iPhone, but it's quite frustrating as it jumps around a bit.

For this shot I set up two Profoto lights, one with a beauty dish on the right of the shot, and the other with a spill kill bouncing off the walls on the other side, equal ratios. I shot this using broad lighting, where the illuminated side is towards the camera. Generally I would choose short lighting, where the illuminated side of the face is further away, but, on the set of images done here, this one looked best.

For focus I set up the D3 at f22 and 70mm on a 24-70 at ISO 400 and used a handheld, wired, Nikon external trigger. This relied on me pre-positioning where the autofocus would hunt, and then making sure I sat with my eye on that spot.

Post-processing was Focus Magic on the reduced size version to recover the lost sharpness.

The "Saut-du-Doubs", or "Jump of the Doubs river", at the French-Swiss border near La Chaux-de-Fonds. 27-meter falls...

I steadied my camera and lens against the railing of the lookout on the Swiss border and took several exposures.

EDIT: this also corresponds to #48, "a waterfall"...

Number 67: WWII Aircraft

A couple of years back the feature act at our local air show was “Tora! Tora! Tora!” presented by the Commemorative Air Force. They had Japanese aircraft representative of the aircraft that attacked Pearl Harbor.

I shot with a 70-200 and my D300s. One challenge in shooting propeller aircraft is choosing your shutter speed. If the shutter speed is too fast you will freeze the propeller making it look like the engine is not running. If the shutter speed is too slow then the propeller will completely invisible and that just doesn’t look right either. You need a shutter speed that causes the propeller to be visible but blurred.

Number 94: Predator with pray

As a wildlife photographer I am lucky to live near a great location for photographing American Bald Eagles during the winter months. From November to March hundreds of eagles gather along the Mississippi River. The dams in the upper section of the river keep sections of the river from freezing and the water moving through the dam force fish to the surface of the water. At Lock and Dam 14 we can set up on a sea wall right at the river’s edge. There are roosting trees just behind our shooting position and some more trees on an island just in front of us. We are probably a half mile away from the dam itself but we have open water coming out from a small lock just in front of us. When the eagle numbers are strong we can have 10 or more eagles fishing just in front of us.

Exposure can be difficult with the white head and dark body. I usually start off with -0.3 exposure compensation and adjust as needed throughout the day. I track the eagles as they approach and start to fire a long burst just before they grab the fish. The goal is to capture images just before and just after the grab. You need fast shutter speeds and good panning technique to get these shots.

These shots are from a couple months ago when these two WWII aircraft were giving rides out of the local airport. They have been beautifully restored. You can see the names of the personnel involved in the restoration processes stenciled on the right side of each plane.

While the images are OK, nothing compares to the sound of the big radial engines on these planes.

There were several of us photographers stationed at the approach end of the runway. These two are on final approach to landing. Lot of shutters going off as they came closer.

This is my submission for #67, WWII Aircraft.

Thanks Dave. I would have liked a tad bit slower shutter to get better blur on the props but then I may have sacrificed sharpness. Oh, well next time.

The clouds were actually in the distance over a hill. The planes are maybe 150' off the ground on their approach. The shot angle was just above horizontal so I could include the clouds. Kinda looks like they're at altitude with the clouds back there.

No, no ride. Need to scrounge up about $500. Maybe next time.

Number 57: Selective Focus

I created this image as part of the Nikonians On Line assignments. It was November 2006 and the assignment was Wide Open, Single Focused Subject.

I set up a clock on a table and used a macro lens set at its widest aperture to get sharp focus on the center of the clock while rendering everything else out of focus. I tried a couple different positions of the hands and this (about 10 minutes past 7) gave me the most pleasing composition. I shot under normal indoor lighting (compact florescent) using auto white balance. The result was significantly warmer than it should have been but I liked it so I did not attempt to fix the WB.

Number 14: The shot you had to literally crawl on the ground to get

Approaching wildlife can be quit challenging. Sometimes getting low can help make you less threatening to the critters. Killdeer are very common but can be pretty skittish. They are often found in gravel so it can be hard to get a pleasing shot if you are shooting from above.

I found a couple running around a boat ramp parking area. I pulled the truck up and parked so that the birds were on the passenger side so that I could get out and setup without spooking the birds. I had made a camera mount (similar to this) just for this kind of work. I got down on my belly while still out of site of the birds and slowly crawled out to a decent shooting position.

The low angle and shallow depth of field eliminated the “parking lot” look from the image and separates the bird from the background. I think this is a male bird putting on a mating display for the nearby female.

These are two skittish birds that like to stay in cover. Both were shot from my truck, using a homemade window mount, at a local wetland refuge.


I found the Night Heron just before sunset when I saw a bird shape near the base of some brush. I was moving fairly fast so I keep going for a bit before I stopped then backed up slowly. Luckily the lens was still on my window mount so I just had to quickly pull the TC off.

These guys seem to freeze and wait to see if you’re a threat so I had time for a couple shots but he had a branch across his eye. The sound of the shutter made him start to climb down and I was able to get two clean shots before he disappeared deeper in the brush.

I took the Perseid challenge this year and it was my first attempt. The suggestions made from posts in previous years were quite helpful especially the 500/Focal Length (FX) rule for freezing stars during your exposure. (HT MotoMannequin) I used my AF-S 35mm 1.8 on my D7000 and set my shutter speed for 8 seconds. The rule suggested I could go as long as 9.5s. I set the camera to shoot once every 10 seconds. The built-in intervalometer sure makes this process simple.

Even though I had not shot this type of event before, I did not want just the typical meteor in the sky with no context so I picked a location that would be far enough away from the big city lights and would put the lights at my back, also. I knew the cliffs across the other side of Canyon Lake would make a nice foreground element and the local lights from the boats and marina would cast a detail revealing glow on the rocks. Of course, you need to know the best place in the sky to look for meteors from specific showers as well.

Using the 35mm lens would limit the number of captures but as a trade-off the meteors in the frame would be larger than they would have appeared if I had used a wider angle lens. I had two good captures in about 3 hours of shooting before the moon rose and the clouds rolled in and ended the show. I also had a dozen or so weaker ones that don't show up with normal processing.

I did need to bump up the exposure in CNX2 and I could have used a wider aperture than the f/2.2 I chose or increased the ISO a bit. I think I get fooled by the relative brightness of the LCD screen when viewing it in the dark night conditions. I should come up with a LCD setting to compensate for this in the future.

It is debatable on whether or not I should crop out the lights from the boats in the foreground. I do like showing that this is a lake and I don't think it's too distracting.

#1 The Moon. I have taken many shots of the moon and this is the latest. While on a month long visit to Victoria, B.C. there was a full moon. This shot was taken from our condo's terrace with a D700 and Sigma 150-500@500mm, f/8, 1/60,ISO100, EV-.3, spot metering, manfrotto tripod. The moon was just rising and very orange. I converted the image to B&W to get better detail and cropped to square using Lightroom 4.1

#11 Sunset or Sunrise over water.
From the terrace of the condo my wife and I are renting in Victoria, B.C. there is a great view east over the Upper Harbour. At sunrise on a cloudy morning (5am) this view presented itself. The volcano on the horizon, for those who know the area, is Mt.Baker in Washington State.
D700, Nikkor 28-300VR@44mm, f/5, 1/100, ISO640, EV-.7, matrix metering, handheld. It has been the only cloudy morning so far this month.

#7 Fast-moving sport--Standardbred racing

Handheld shot taken with D300 and 70-200mm lens at 120 mm.
I had the camera in shutter priority mode at 1/800 sec to freeze the motion. ISO was 400 to get an aperture with at least a little DOF. Also set on AF-C and matrix metering.


#7 Fast-moving sport --Thoroughbred racing

Another handheld shot with my D300 but this time with 70-300mm lens at 250mm (before I had the 70-200). This one was shot in aperture priority f5.6. I'm not quite sure why I was shooting in this mode that day. Shutter speed was 1/250 sec, ISO 400, AF-C, matrix metering.

There are so many different types of shots that can be made depending upon at what point in the race you choose to shoot.

#s 16 and 52 Better in B&W and Famous portrait

This was taken when Mr Clinton visited our small town to campaign for Barack Obama in 2008 after Mrs Clinton was out of the race. My dear husband went to the venue early and saved me a front row spot since I worked right up until time for the meeting.

The background was an ugly color and I just thought that this shot looked best in B&W.

Details--D300, 70-200mm lens at 200mm, f2.8, aperture priority, ISO 800, 1/100 sec.

The AF gave out on my Sigma 105 macro. With this lens being sharp I still wanted to use it. Never tried manual focus before, but after some trial and error I was able to get some sharp results. Found I now prefer manual focus.

This Sweat Bee is very tiny, don't think the AF would have picked up the eye in focus as well.

D300, Sigma F/2.8
F/4.5, 1/320, manual everything, tripod
Processed in CS5, slight curves, layers, and sharpening.

A 2006 shot of my now sadly missing Cretan kitten Tigraki (=tiger cub).

Entirely unplanned. I was following her around the terrace hoping for a decent shot when she took off as shown - no apparent reason, hence 'Joie de vivre'.

D2X 18-200mmm at 46mm, 250th at f8, ISO 100, bright sunlight, no flash, auto focus and exposure. Best I can recall this was using the D2X's 5 fps.

Highlights enhanced and edge sharpened (Aperture).

I had attempted a moon shot several times but with little success. Last spring's "super moon" provided my inspiration. Using The Photographer's Ephemeris I located a spot with the moon arising over the local Sports Pavillion (Ashburn, VA) and with a lake in the foreground.

The image almost did not happen as the afternoon was cloudy and when the moon first arose it was hidden by the clouds. Luckily, 45 minutes after moonrise the clouds parted enough for a picture. This image is actually a double exposure which can be done on my D300. With the camera set for a double exposure and my 18-200mm lens mounted, I first shot a wider angle shot (56mm) with the moon just out of the picture (f22, 30sec, noise reduction on) but enough empty sky to accommodate the second exposure. I then zoomed into 180mm and recomposed the picture with only moon and sky, and the moon in the frame where it should appear in the composite picture. The exposure was set to 1/30 sec, f5.6.

#8 - Take a picture from an airplane

This isn't exactly what I had in mind when I first made the suggestion to take a picture from an airplane, but someone's post of this airplane for #67 WWII airplane reminded me of it. I had taken some folks over to Provo, UT so they could ride back to Denver on this B-24 and a B-17. I started talking to the crew before we left and asked if we could do some formation flying on the way back so I could get a couple of pictures. It was really a thrill of a lifetime for me to get to fly in formation with a B-24 like my dad flew in the war. It's not as sharp as I'd like since I was taking it through the plexiglas window in my airplane, a Beech Baron.

Hello Martin,

You have a great list, but I think you are going to have to include more, and start looking at perhaps the top 200!

101 Night photography - for architecture and cityscapes - 30 to 45 minutes after sunset to achieve a cobalt blue sky, rather than a black background. (similar to 13 and 71, but this specifically refers to taking it with a twilight or pre-dawn sky for better image definition)

102 Converging lines - Though this may be part of composition, converging lines - like looking straight down the middle of a long highway, can be used to point the viewer's eye into a specific area of a photo or a specific subject. Can also be used to give a photo perceived depth.

103 White balance shifting - White balance (WB) can be crucial to achieve proper reproduction of colours, like a white table cloth, the skin tones of a person and more. However, sometimes, a photographer may want to change the mood or feeling of a photo and this can be achieved by purposely changing the WB from say daylight to tungsten (the light bulb icon) to give a photo a blue cast. Can be done in post-production if shooting in RAW mode, however by specifically doing it in the field or on location - this method may provide new artistic insights and inspiration.

In night photos of cityscapes, changing the white balance 30 minutes after sunset from daylight to tungsten and/or to auto white mode, will give office and building lights different colour renditions (this is due to the varying colour temperature of the types of light bulbs used.) In fact, changing to tungsten mode has the added advantage of giving one a more blue night sky, while also cleaning up the colour cast from light pollution.

104 Reflections - Water reflections, secondary reflections or even the kalaidescope effect using three mirrors shaped in a triangle.

Example: Taking a photo of only the reflection of a city skyline in water (which will be upside down) then inverting it (rotating 180 degrees) to create an interesting abstract. (see my sample image below)

105 Movement - while most times a photographer may want to use a high enough shutter speed to freeze an image to get a pin sharp image throughout, one can also easily demonstrate movement by slowing down the shutter to 1/2 second, 5 seconds and more. Think of waterfalls with their powdery, misty fairy tale look, or a seascape with a lighthouse where the crashing waves become a frothy, moody image... or the blurred background and spinning wheels of a race car at a track by panning and shooting at say 1/15 second.

The original image as taken was of just the reflection, which was upside down in 4:3 format. It was rotated 180 degrees, then cropped into a panoramic format. Dirt, twigs and other objects in the water were removed by using the either the Clone or Healing tools in PS-CS4. The saturation was boosted, some adjustments were performed in Levels to adjust the black and white points. The image was then sharpened for the web with PS Unsharp Mask: Radius- 0.3, Threshold- 2, Amount- 180%.

These same adjustments can be achieved in PS Elements 8, 9, and 10 and also with FS Viewer (Fast Stone Viewer) - a Windows platform free download software that works great on small netbooks.


I'm sure others here will comeup with many more ideas for the list too! I'll supply more images in the coming days...

Hi all.

I just posted this at the new Astrophotography Forum then found a reference to this thread. Rather than retype the whole message I decided to copy it over to here. Hope I don't get into trouble for cross posting!

Here is a recent shot of the moon. I was shooting with my D3s and 600 f/4 lens with the tc20eIII on a Gitzo series 5 tripod with the RRS long lens support package and a Wimberley gimbal head. It was shot right by my back porch in El Segundo, CA. Only the fattest tripod section was extended and only far enough that I could view the moon while seated on a low brick wall.

I used a remote cord and since I have a D3s I could use both mirror up and live view at the same time. With live view zoomed all the way, manual focus is easy. In fact you can see the focus kind of 'swimming' due to the atmospheric conditions and time your shots for when it is clearest. Of course with mirror up it is still a crapshoot because of the delay but that seems to be the best I can do. My basic approach is to clamp down the gimbal controls with the lens pointed a little in front of the moon's path and wait a few seconds for it to travel into view. With the Series 5 Gitzo I only wait about 3 seconds for the initial mirror slap to dissipate.

I love being able to see that mountain range kind of top center. I didn't even know that was there until I started getting advice on Nikonians on how to get good shots of the moon (especially from Neil).

I have tried the same approach with my various DX cameras to get out to 1800mm instead of 1200mm but so far my results have been less favorable than with my FX cameras. Of course, none of my DX cameras can combine live view with mirror up. I imagine that atmospheric conditions more severely impact longer focal lengths but perhaps one of the experts can tell us if this is so.

As always, any comments, criticism or advice is very welcome.

I have some adapters that allow me to use a small telescope with my DSLR. This shot is taken at prime focus at 1000mm focal length on a cool fall evening under good conditions.

Pet photos are all about cooperation and good lighting for the eyes. I had our family cats comfortable in their basket and grabbed a nearby task light to see what effect it would have. The cats watched me grabbing the light and I clicked the shutter.

My daughter colored some paper backgrounds and we setup a glass tray under the sink. In dim lighting, we just played with a slow drip into the tray and used flash to freeze the action. Pure fun.

The small town of Pella, IA holds their annual Tulip Festival in the spring. They are noted for Dutch heritage and architecture. I tried to capture tulips up close with decorative buildings in the background.

This is from a series of shots taken in Interlaken, Switzerland in Spring 2007. I had just arrived and was carrying lots of photo gear for a trek higher into the Alps over the following weekend, but on this evening I wasn't really planning any serious shooting. I was tired from a day of travel, and planning to meet a friend for dinner. I just grabbed my D50 & 18-70 lens for some street/snapshooting. It turned out, this (the closer/wide angle shot) was my favorite from the entire trip, which just goes to show you never know when you'll stumble across that special shot.

I shot this garden from across the street at 70mm (DX), then decided I needed to get closer, so I crossed the street and shot at 18mm and closer to the ground. Taken together, these are a great example of how changing position alters perspective. In the telephoto shot, all the emphasis is on the background, and in the wide angle shot, the emphasis is shifted completely to the foreground. For me, this completely destroys the myth of "foot zooming" or that you can compensate focal length by changing position i.e. "just take a few steps back." Changing position changes the composition. Perhaps the best balance here would have been somewhere in between (I'd like slightly more emphasis on the mountain in the wider shot) but that would have put me in the middle of the street!

Coast Redwoods are remarkably resistant to fire, which allows them to live for centuries and part of what allows them to grow to enormous heights. However, it's their bark which gives them much of their resistance. Sometimes through damage to the tree, fire is able to penetrate to the more flammable core and the tree can then smoulder from the inside, with the fire burning up through the middle and eventually blowing the top off the tree! That's what created the "Chimney Tree" in Big Basin California State Park. Remarkably, this tree is still alive!

This is an abstract made by shooting ultra-wide (10mm DX) straight up through the trunk of the Chimney Tree. I was with Nikonian blw and we both did this shot (I've included a 2nd picture of Brian taking the shot, to give some context.) This was an HDR made from a 5-shot/1-stop bracket.

This was shot in the Cholla Cactus Garden at Joshua Tree National Park. My wife and I had arrived shortly before sunset, and never having been there I had no idea where to shoot, and didn't have time to scout before nightfall. I did notice how the cholla cacti seemed to glow when they were backlit. The park map showed a "Cholla Cactus Garden" which was close enough to make before sunset, so we went for it. It turned out, my instincts paid off...

Incidentally, this shot was taken with a stack of GND filters, and it really marked the beginning of me deciding to ditch my GNDs in favor of blending bracketed exposures in post-processing. The biggest issue was tons of flare from the multiple parallel surfaces created by the GND stack. This probably wasn't helped by the fact that my GNDs by then were kind of old and had many micro-scratches in the surface. In the end I find it much simpler in the field to simply bracket exposures, then simulate the "grad" by blending those exposures with gradient masks in Photoshop. That way I can place the grad wherever I want, vary the strength, and even deviate from straight-line if I choose. Also, it gets all those extra surfaces away from my lens, which is critical when you're pointing your camera at the sun.

This was shot at the end of a day shooting in and around San Francisco with Nikonian alberte. Many of the higher overlooks were fogged in, but I had the idea that if we could get underneath the clouds, we might get a cable car on a steep hill rising into the fog. This was the result of that pre-visualization.

You'll see many photos of this famous hill, but I wanted to move back as far as possible and shoot with a very long lens, thinking that if I could compress the distance to the top of the hill, that would necessarily exaggerate the steepness of the hill. Hence here it appears steeper than most shots of this view.

#54. "#79 - Airplane approach to landing...."

As some may recall, I suggested #79 be a floatplane approach for landing, later in the afternoon, lights on, blah, blah, blah. The reason for that was that I had a mental image that has been coming together for a couple years now but the parameters haven't been right. Today was the first time things started coming together so I took advantage of it as a first go-around. Even though the parameters aren't quite right and there's some imperfections in this first effort I'm going to post it anyway. Sort of a kick in the pants to get it done better.

There was another Nikonian, can't remember his "handle", that is also waiting for the perfect conditions, weather I believe, for his image he's been waiting years to get. Note to him, hang in there, it will happen.

Please let me know how this effort can be improved (besides it being somewhat sharper) so I can utilize your suggestions to make the results of the next session better.

This little bug was watching me. And every time I moved the camera closer, it would move deeper into the flower, trying to hide behind another rose petal. But the photographer persisted and won out in the end.

Here is a shot taken in the Alabama Hills of Mt. Whitney through a hole in a rock at sunrise. Since the only thing with any light on it was Mt. Whitney itself, I had to use a couple of gelled flashes to light the rock. So, I had to cart in two light stands, two flashes, 120" tripod, 4' ladder. As you can see from the first picture it was a somewhat involved setup.

Awesome DOF on this one but that makes sense with f22. Looks like you set up about 15 - 20 feet from the granite window. I noticed you have image stabilization on even though you used a tripod. That didn't cause a problem?

Hi Joe.

Actually there was not enough depth of field so this is a combination of two shots taken seconds apart with the first focused on Mt. Whitney and the second on the rock (both at the same exposure).

I was set up about 15 feet from the window. Here is one shot from another 6 feet away and at 140mm instead of 120mm to try and make the mountain fill the 'frame'. This second one was shot in August and the first in April. For the second one I carried in a six foot ladder. I didn't do as good of a job combining the two photos and haven't reworked it yet.



I sometimes forget to turn off VR but it didn't seem to cause me any trouble.

This is really well done Jim. I've seen similar shots attempted, but I find that due to different white balances in play, it's usually obvious that the foreground is lit by a different light than Mt. Whitney. Here, it looks like the gels did the trick. There's no artificial feel at all to the lighting.

The tough thing about the entire "Whitney Portal" concept I'm sorry to say is that (in my opinion) it's already relegated to cliché. In that respect your Mobius Arch shot below with the sunburst is my favorite of all of these, since it's a composition I've never before seen of this famous landmark.

D7000, Nikkor 18-200mm at 200mm, ISO 800, f/10 at 1/1600 with polarizing filter.

Handheld, captured from a pontoon boat on Northern Wisconsin lake. Working the shoreline looking for eagles I came upon this heron roosting in a pine tree. When I was about 50 yards from the tree the heron took off and I captured the image as the bird flew directly in front of the boat.

Thanks Ken, I have fun attempting to capture wildlife on our lake. And, for this coming year I've just purchased a 70-300 Tamron lens that should provide a bit more reach and excellent image quality.
