"The things we have to put up with to photograph"

Lafayette, US

Sometimes I hate Louisiana weather. Today is one of those times.

For months I have been driving by this old WWII truck/jeep every morning and afternoon on the way to my office. I would look at it and think, there is a photo in there.

Currently, the morning sun comes in at a slight to the rear of broadside and there isn't too much clutter behind it. Could I find that photo in that scene?

Well, this morning the sun was shinning. I left home early, remembering to put the camera bag in the truck. I arrived shortly after seven. Pulled the camera out and spent a few minutes sizing up the scene and looking for the best angles and shots. I then checked the camera settings, removed the lens cap and squatted for my first shot.

The lens was fogged!!!!! Louisiana humidity strikes again.

You could live in the Pacific Northwest and see how many shades of gray you can capture.

You are all invited up here for the Annual Seattle Rain Festival... it runs from Jan 1 to Dec 31.

C'mon Mick, what's wrong with being surrounded by a huge 18% gray card? Makes it easy to set your white balance.

I hear you John. South Texas humidity gets to me too. While I enjoy living close to the Gulf the weather sometimes can really be a drag, especially this time of year. Next time leave the camera bag out in the bed of the truck and away from the A/C.

Yes, it just sneaked up on me. We have had fairly dry weather lately. Oh well, I will try again tomorrow.

Oh no! I have a firm belief that if God had meant for me to freeze, I would have been born a Yankee and not a Coonass.

There is a cure for the fogging. Keep the camera and lenses in a warmer environment. In high humidity areas, people like to crank up the air conditioning in order to dehumidify as well as cool. However, that temperature difference is the culprit. If you get over to Avery Island, please post a few photos.

I've had that experience too. I find that within 5-10 minutes the condensation will evaporate and you can get your shot. Can you wait that long? Meanwhile, I've shot through the fog as it evaporates, thinking of it as a "creative filter" effect.

John:

It could be worse ...

Today I had to shovel fifteen inches of sunshine off the driveway before I could get my car out of the garage.

One recent afternoon, the relative humidity dropped to seven percent or so, and my wife sent me out to exercise a bit in the driveway so we could refill our salt shakers with the crystals that form on my arms as the sweat evaporates.

We typically have an average of 423.7 days of sunshine a year here, and the only time our airport shuts down is when the massive dust storms blanket the city.

It is so dry here that popcorn refuses to pop because it dehydrates within ten seconds after the bag is opened.

The really old-timers here are still talking about the last tiime it rained: Six inches per minute at least. That's one drop every six inches for one whole minute.

It must be something to live in an area where water falls right out of the sky and is delivered to your front door.

Thank you Hal for a Good Morning chuckle. What a nice way to start the day. I loved your witticism and hyperbole. I can understand your problems.

Years ago, while in the military, I had a friend who was an Instructor Pilot at Luke AFB. I once visited him by taking a slight southerly jog on the way to Hill AFB in Utah. The sun was so bright, I couldn't see well enough to do a visual approach, so I had to fly an ILS.

P.S. It looks like rain again today. I may have to wait for another opportunity to take those pictures.

John: Trade you the humidity: I tried getting some shots in a local nature area: there were horseflies the size of my thumb feasting on my neck and back. Shall I ship some? Be sure to put the truck picture up here.

Hal: Oh the humanity!!! How do you make it through the day?

From the rocking of the cradle to the rolling of the hearse, the going up was worth the coming down

Yeah Hal, but it is a dry heat.

Seriously, I grew up in Laredo, Texas about 150 mile northwest of where I live now. It is amazing how different the weather is there from here closer to the Gulf. It is actually not much different from Phoenix (yes I have been there several times). Summers are usually filled with day after day of 110° temps with little humidity although the area gets about ~20 inches of rain/year. Still it is mostly dwarfed mesquite trees and miles and miles of prickly pear flats around there.

And for those complaining about shoveling snow, I would never trade with you guys. Although I like a few weeks of cold weather I would hate to face months of snow and ice. I would rather live down here where all we have to do is dodge the occasional hurricane.

John:

You're welcome. It if we didn't have a sense of humor, we would all be daft by noon. The hottest day in my fifty years here was 122 F, (50 C) back in 1992 or so.

Lee:

Staying hydrated is the key. During the day I drink water, particularly if outside. I try not to drink too much water, as I don't want to become a hydraulic. After 5:00 pm, I switch to Corona beer from Mexico, or a good California Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon from our cellar over a nice evening meal. On weekends, I may sip a wee dram of single malt scotch, strictly for hydration purposes.

One does what one must do to make it through the long hot summer. I play a little mind game when we hit the first 100+degree day, typically in May. Next comes school graduations and Memorial Day, followed by the summer solstice due in about ten days, then the 4th of July, schools re-open in August, then Labor Day and the autumnal equinox in September. Each little psychological mile post gets me one step closer to relief. From there, it is a few short weeks with cooler evenings until we enter the "season" as it is called.

So .. I don't get how a guy with so much sun needs so many flash units !

I hear ya about the heat. Which is why I shoot indoors so much this time of year. Gin and tonic gets me through the hot stuff.

Cheers ...

Sal:

I purchased my first breeding pair of SB800s shortly after they appeared on the market. This was about the time I got seriously into photographing police officers at night. One thing led to another and before I knew it, I had an entire herd of twelve SB800s. I believe they feed on lost socks and clothes dryer lint.

Much of my work winds up on four-color, sheet fed, offset presses. To maintain an acceptable dynamic range, within the color space of the presses, I often use flash fill on the shadow side of subjects, even in broad daylight.

Gin and tonic is my wife's favorite libation following a hard day at the lawyering office where she manages the financial department.
