"Suggestions for a point and shoot"

US

Looking for a P&S for the mrs to carry around with her. It doesn't need to be limited to a Nikon. something maybe in the 6 to 12 MP range.
Among others i've been researching the Canon G9 but seems like it can develop battery drain problems. Used is ok as long as it's in good shape.

Suggestions? comments?

I have had a Canon G3 and presently have a G11 (I carry it in my backpack just in case my D7000 fails!). I love the G11. It produces great JPEG images and has all the functionality you can ask for, including the ability to shoot RAW.

Seing the results, the speed, and the "no trouble" set of mind of the Nikon 1 series (see forum here) I would think it's the P&S (and maybe more) that I would choose for my wife (she has already the CP P50) ! And maybe for myself (V1)...

I have a friend who just got a Nikon L22. (May now be known as the L24) What a neat little camera! 12mp, and a 3x zoom lens. Small and light, but still feels solid in the hand.

Thanks guys
Looks like the L series nikons is up to L26 now, & thats a possibility. I'm not looking for something too complex as it'll see little use but she occasionally does need a camera at work or see's something she wants a photo of when one of the dslr's isnt accessible for her. Used isnt an issue as long as the condition's good and of course under the scenerio it'll see use, inexpensive is good.

Charlie,
I sure like the little L22. Almost went out and bought one (an L26, I guess) when I went and loaded my friend's software, etc. I was blown away by the quality of the shots I got with it.

I got a Canon S95. It is small, well built, has an F2.0-4.9 lens, and a somewhat larger than usual (for this camera size) sensor. It easily fits in my pocket, and is much more likely to be with me than one of the larger P&S cameras. I am impressed by it's picture quality.

We bought our elder daughter this for Christmas, and the results have been excellent. Solid quality feel, lovely viewing screen, easy to use, good lens f3.1, big optical zoom range. Half the price of the G12. Small and flat enough to go into a handbag or pocket, but big enough to still feel like a real camera. Next step up in my view would be a D3100, but having said that I did take a family pic in town today using their Nikon 1, which felt great, but again over twice the price of this below and I doubt if you would notice the difference in print quality or convenience:-

The new Nikon coolpix P7000 seems like a good choice, simple but has some of the capabilities of a DSLR.

Hi!

My own $0.02...

A G-someting, a P-something are good choice if you're looking for cams that have "dslr-like" capabilities. But if you're considering something easier to carry in a handbag, simpler to use and if raw is not a factor (I'm describing my own better half here ), there are plenty of panasonic, nikon, canon and fuji cameras in the "lesser" ranges that will indeed do the job.

I got my wife a Canon Ixus 115 HS. In the green mode, there is nothing to worry about, and there are some more "creative" ways to use it too!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the suggestions. It looks like I'll have to start doing the research on the various suggestions and figure out what'll suit her best.
