I think that's a waste of time. We should focus on more productive things like D5 speculation, wishes and rumors.

I'll start. In common with all the pro level Nikon DSLRs, I feel it is too large and too heavy for me. I would like to see a Nikon FF DSLR along the the lines of the Leica M9. Compact, simple, and and a great photography instrument. Unfortunately, the Leica is a rangefinder camera and extremely expensive. I doubt that Nikon sees such a camera concept like the M9 in a DSLR as a money maker for them.

The D700 is still a large, heavy camera by my standards.

For many it is. Personally, I added the vertical grip, in part to add heft and size. I wanted to make the camera easier to use, by being steadier, and easier to grip.

To Ned and Matthew (posts 21 & 22)

I use the D700 in all my pro work and find it to be a great cam! I've taken it around the world, and just last summer - 32 days in Iceland. It's tough! I just bought a second one new for $2395 CDN as a backup.

I looked at the D3S and yikes, that is indeed a heavy beast! The D4 appears to follow in its footsteps. And those batteries - whoa! - at $160 and plus, they are double the cost of the D700 bats.

To save weight, on my D700, I don't use a vertical grip with the extra battery. Instead I custom made my own L bracket out of a piece of aluminum angle, cut 2 inches wide. I purposely left extra on the side, so I have a second "handle" to hold the cam with. Also works great for stability while panning on a tripod, or while using a Wimberley gimbal mount with a large lens.

Here are two pics with the bracket attached. I've since changed the Manfrotto quick release brackets, to Wimberley Arca Swiss style plates. FYI the photo was for a workshop on how to protect your cam while shooting in the rain or dust, with a clear zip lock freezer bag. At the moment, I don't have any pics minus the bag.

Cheers

Hi Frederic,

I've often said here at Nikonians, and elsewhere of course, each person must find what works best for them. What I do may work for some, and it may not come close to working for others.

Look at camera bags. There are thousands of different bags out there selling regularly. Each person has their own needs and wants.

I use the D700 in my work and carry it around all over the world too. Recently I had it for almost a month while all over the Middle East. It had the vertical grip on it the whole time, and an "L" bracket too.

While I can understand why you went with your bracket, that wouldn't work for me, but it may for some others.

I am seriously considering the D4 for my new primary camera, but have to have some questions about it answered before I order it. It looks like it's a terrific camera for my needs for travel, and journalism assignments, as it builds on the strengths of the D3S/D700.

Thanks for your feedback Ned. Agree with you 100 percent.

I would love to buy the D4, and in fact the major Nikon dealer in Montreal, LL Lozeau, will have one in their hands for review on Tuesday morning (not in February!). However at this time, having just bought a second D700 as a backup, its not in the budget for a few months.

Then again, if I sell my old D200, D300, and a pile of older photo gear I have accumulated over the years... maybe I can yet pull this off

Hi ho, Hi ho... its off to work I go!

Cheers,

Frederic in Montréal

Very, very NAS package.
- MP
- FPS
- ISO
- AE
- AF
- buffer !
- connectivity
- grip ergonomics
- subject tracking
- battery life (?)

It's a long list.
Looking forward to reading hands-on reviews of how well it all works together - and seeing images to bring the specs to life.
AF @ f/8, nice. We need scientific notation for ISO now - 2E5 - nice.
Feb 15th is only 40 days away.

Here's a link to the Nikon Imaging D4 information page. It has the most comprehensive information on the D4 available at this time.

Among other things on the page, you can find a complete specification page. The information available there is more complete than can be found on the Nikon USA site at this point.

One of the interesting things I've noticed is according to the spec sheet at Nikon Imaging, the D4 has a built-in RJ-45 Ethernet port, but no further details about it. If the D4 can become a "network" device, that could be an extremely useful detail of the camera, according to how it's implemented. It's also interesting that the Nikon USA spec sheet on the D4 page there doesn't list this feature, at least as far as I can see.

For videographers, Nikon has approved the Sandisk Extreme Pro 128GB Compact Flash Card to work in the D4. That was really essential.

I was curious about the RJ-45 port as well. Need to get my hands on the user manual.

I was also surprised it kept the CF card media.

If nothing else, there are many with many CF cards who would be very upset to have to add the investment of another kind of card to an already overpriced camera. I'm one of them.

I'm wondering where the metering mode switch has gone and where the AE-L/AF-L Button is too. I don't see them anywhere.

I don't either but in the Tech Specs on the Nikon website under Focus Lock, Nikon states "Focus can be locked by pressing AE-L/AF-L button."

Hi John,

Personally, I'm not at all concerned with focus lock. Focus lock can be achieved in many ways. For example, typically, by default, if you press your shutter release halfway you get focus lock. For me, for example, when shooting wildlife, I use the AF-On button for focus, and remove focus from the shutter release. So once I've focused, it's locked, so I can recompose, either way.

I keep focus lock and exposure lock separate.

I'm concerned about exposure lock. I want an easy way to lock exposure then recompose. That's what I use the AE-L/AF-L button for. I'm sure there's a way, but right now, it looks like I have to program a button for that. Two things then come to mind. Will the button be convenient? Would I rather have that button for some other function?

I just don't know the answer to these questions.

I follow with the list of complaints and disappointments:
Is way too big, heavy and expensive (Expected to start at 4800 GBP acc. British PhotoAnswers.com) for me.

Now that we already know everything about D4 already, let's focus on D800 and D400 speculations. Or, as someone suggested, why don't we start dreaming of D5....

Cheers,

I agree with Alex, quickest customers will be amateurs who don't need to bother about Return of Investment (regarding photography, sure!)
Mick, you are certainly right, but as I'll have to stay with D300 for a while, that's why my proper order for especulation is D400, D800,....D1000,....D5.....D9.....

I think that you'll find that the first batches of cameras will be going to NPS members in time for the Olympic Games, just like last time. Sure amateurs will get them too but I'll bet my paycheck that it'll be pros buying or at least GETTING them first.

Btw, I really don't understand the negativity every time Nikon bring out a new pro camera. It's always too expensive, too big, too heavy, not fast enough, not enough megapixels, too late and lacking something or otther for many folks, most of whom have no intention of EVER buying them in the first place.

Just saying' ....

Does anyone think it is possible that this site could purchase the camera and an in depth review could then be done by someone knowledgeable and posted. This would calm the speculation down a bit. To fund the purchase a raffle among the members - each paying a sum of money - could be held and the outlay recouped?

That's a great idea. There are certainly more than a few experts here who could put the camera through it's paces and make an objective report. Perhaps a trio of reports would be good. It would certainly add value to this site.

Maybe the camera itself would end up being of collector value ("the Nikonians evaluation model") .

How about we have the first full spectrum review, we also hand the unit over to a talent-less hack with more money than brains. That way we could have balanced points of view. Those of us that to learn more about the new AF unit's performance or how the new mini multi-function button feels and works, could get the cold hard facts, and those of us you want to hear that the missing scene modes make it hard to learn, or the fact that it only comes in black will hurts sales.

Who knows perhaps you could run with this, say give both reviewers access to it at the same time, same place... say... a gym... kinda like UFC meets Photokina.

I like the first half of Howard's idea a lot! Select an average active and serious Nikonian and lend them the body (with lens if needed) for two weeks provided they will commit the time and give us back a report and some pictures.

I'm also thinking that if Nikonians approached the leading rental companies in the most active Nikonian member countries (such as US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Aus) that you could get a 2 week rental for a nominal amount with only a little arm twisting and begging.

This way we could get maybe six views of the D4 from a cross-section of users (landscape, HS sports, birds, PJ) who are experienced with older Nikon equipment (D5100, D700, D300, Dxx, well maybe one D3).

I am sure we could find a senior Nikonian to co-ordinate/consolidate so that there is assistance available as well as some consistency in the usage and results.

I would love to read those reviews.

After reviewing all of the intriguing specs on the D4, I wondered if I could afford one. A quick check of B&H revealed that they were offering the camera at the announced MSRP of $5,999.95.

That tells me that B&H is either counting on capitalizing on a few photographers with extreme NAS, or they have not yet been informed of their wholesale cost. It's tough to pre-order knowing that the D4 will be selling below MSRP in 6 months!

In October we had a discussion at Nikonians in the English Cafe, about Nikon announcing they were tightening enforcement of their minimum advertised price (MAP) policy to make pricing more uniform.

B&H and other retailers are merely conforming to this policy.

I believe at some point the price will drop, to some degree, but I doubt it will be in 6 months, and unless Nikon relaxes their policy, the price won't drop until Nikon is ready to do so.

Higher cost, in the beginning of a product cycle, is the price "early adopters" normally have to pay to be among the first to get the product.

Moreover, the D4 is intended for the Pro Photographer Market where the cost can be justified by better productivity, superior quality, the ability to get shots which would otherwise be very difficult, etc., and where the cost of the camera can be expensed (a biggie difference between pro and amateur).

I am bemused by the comment that Nikon was "tightening enforcement of their minimum advertised price". In many countries, including my home country Australia, this is ILLEGAL, and if Nikon was caught insigating such a policy here, they would be fined heavily and forced to desist! This is called "retail price maintenence" and is a big NO NO! Companies such as Miele (electrical goods) get around this law by appointing agents rather than retailers, but Nikon do not operate in this fashion. Where is Nikon dictating to its retailers the minimum price at which Nikon products can be sold?

Maybe this discussion from October will make it clear:
http://www.nikonians.org/forums/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=190&topic_id=76747&mesg_id=76747

In many countries including the US, controlling the "advertised" price of a product by the supplier is not necessarily illegal. In Canada recent amendments to the Competition Act have made unilateral minimum advertised pricing programs legal subject to conditions delineated in the Competition Act. Apparently, in your home country, Australia, from what I understand, you are correct that under the Trade Practices Act, MAP is illegal.

Hi all.

I'm not sure I understand how anyone can complain that 16 megapixels with the same high ISO capability of the D3s (or even a little better) is somehow a disappointment. It is the very best I would have expected and I am amazed that they accomplished it.

Now if they can just make a similar stride in a real DX camera (D400) with enough high ISO capability that I don't have to shoot birds and sports with my FX cameras, I will be very happy.

Time to sit back and wait for the DXXX incarnation of this thing. It took about a year for the D3's features to make it into a D700. I'm willing to wait that long. The D4 is overkill for my little photo business and since my employer thinks that a D1H and D2H are perfectly adequate for shooting high school sports in gymnasiums lit by candles, they won't be purchasing a new D4 for me. So I'm going to hang in there with the D7000 for now.

I'll be sticking with my beautiful D700. 12mp on FX is enough for me. But: "It's the lens, stupid!" New glass is where I'll be looking for any improvement. So if anyone has a pristine 24-70 to offer at a reasonable price....! Two excellent (looking) ones went this weekend on e-bay (UK) for £955 and £970...beyond me. Costs circa. £1300 here, new.
But I do welcome the fact that, in these hard times, Nikon are still pushing forward.

No problem, and thanks for getting back to me about this. I've gotten enough answers to my questions overall that I have a D4 ordered which will replace my oldest D700 and put my primary D700 as my new backup.

I'm probably going to hang on to the older one, but I am going to sell my D200 and lenses I use with it.

Can you disclose which lenses do you think of selling?

Hi Adam. Yes, that looks like that's probably correct. I appreciate the correction.

Mine is ordered and something tells me I'm going to need all the help I can get here and elsewhere to give the D4 the quality use it deserves. Good to be back with Nikonians

Ned, Seems more like it's been announced. Does anyone have any inside dope on when it will be available. As I noted earlier, mine is ordered but it would be good if we have a notion of when they will be shipped.

Thank you,

Bill
