"UNERASE an SD card"

US

Greetings, last night I took a bunch of Halloween pics of my little girl with my D80. End of the night I transferred them over to my hard drive. Apparently this wasn't successful, whereas they are not in the folder I thought, or any other folder. I've already placed the card back in my camera, and hit the format buttons.

Is there anything I can do now to recover the images. No new pics have been taken with the card. Is there anyway to recover?

So many thanks,
Stephen

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your images.

If you have already reformatted the card, my guess is you are out of luck.

I would try a search on your computer using the date and file type (*.jpg) as criteria. Sometimes photos really are transferred but end up in an odd folder. Be sure you look in all areas of your computer - not just your organizaer or target folder. Also check your recycle bin if there is one.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice. I've already searched for the RAW images, with no luck on the computer. But, there has to be a way of recovering images from the card. Anyone have knowledge of this?

Thanks,
Stephen

Stephen,

What type (Brand/Model) of card are you using?

Maybe this website can help, you can get a 30 day free trial for recovery software.

http://www.photosrecovery.com/

Also sandisk makes a product called recovery pro.

Good Luck.

I had a card foul up on me once (a friend removed it from the camera while it was still in use). I took it to Best Buy and they were able to recover everything. I hadn't re-formatted it so I can't say whether it would work for you, but it might be worth a shot.

Stephen, welcome to Nikonains!

I just bought File Recover by PCTools Software. I also have Registry Mechanic and Spyware Doctor and can tell you they sell excellent software. This should be able to recover your images.

SanDisk bundles rescuePRO recovery software with Extreme III SD cards... I'd get one of those cards and give the software a try.

Stephen,

Here is a product that might help...

For now, do not format your card again until you try one of the recovery software programs.

I have had to recover files several times. The very best software I have used for this is File Scavenger from: http://www.quetek.com/prod02.htm .

It works on memory cards, hard disks, CDs, and DVDs. It is worth every penny of the $50 it costs.

Incidently, I've discovered that reformatting the CF card or erasing images does not actually erase any of the old images. It just changes the FAT table to make the camera and PC think the card is empty. Then, you can always go back a recover old images as long as they have not been overwritten.

Also, when you take a new shot after reformatting, the camera knows where the last image was stored, and it starts at that point storing the new images. This is done mostly to avoid rewriting the same memory locations every time which would shorten the life of the card. But it also avoids overwriting the old images on the card, and allows you to retrieve images from months back as long as you haven't shot enough new images to overwrite all the old ones. The first time I ran File Scavenger, I was amazed to find images on one of my cards from over a year earlier after dozens of shoots and reformats.

You have other product suggestions that look great to me but I will just add this one as something else to consider because I have personal experience with it ....

http://www.runtime.org

offers "getdataback" which a couple of years ago saved my bacon by recovering even from a formatted drive and by recovering from a drive suffering hardware failures. It seemed able to achieve the impossible. Purchase price was around $50 - $60 but it saved me $thousands.

I don't know if they handle memory cards so you would want to check that first. In my case the recovery problem was so complicated I needed help and at the time they provided excellent, competent phone service, guiding me through some of the intricacies of recovery. As I recall all their stuff ran under Windows XP and did not require safe mode or the DOS screen.

Good luck with this.

And in the four years since this present one started, the OP did not even bother to say "thank you"...
