"Your 2007 travel Kit?"

Portland, US

I asked several months ago, what lenses to take to France. Well after shooting in several different local sites over the past months with various combinations, I have now have my 2007 travel kit assembled.

I was considering getting rid of my 80-200 f2.8, but I did a lot of shooting with a buddy and his 18-200. For me the difference between my images and his (and he's pretty good, just had several images in the Nature's Best at the Smithsonian) were just to great (he just bought a 70-200VR to fix the differenc .

So until I upgrade to the next version of the D200, here's my travel kit:

D70
Nikkors:
12-24
80-200 f2.8 with KenkoPro1.4 (just couldn't file the tabs off either my E1.4 or 1.7)
Canon 500D
Sensor dust travel brush and blower, several batteries and lots of cards.

All comfortable in a LowPro AW2 (love the rain coat, saved me the last two travel seasons).

I just tested the 80-200 f2.8 with the Kenko and was quit pleased wide open, really good even compared to my 300.

After two years of buying lenses (actually sold one, darn) and trying various combinations, for me this size bag and the versitility of these items is the perfect travel kit.

What is your minimal travel kit for this year?

What is your minimal travel kit for this year?

My minimal travel kit is my Pronea S plus 30-60mm and 60-180mm lenses. It travels to and from work with me 4 to 5 days a week.

I'm still trying to figure out what to bring on my upcoming vacation, though, up to and including whether to go with film, digital, or both.

What can I say? No only do I still have a Pronea, but when mine broke a couple of months ago it took two tries to replace it. As a result, I've also got a couple of spare 30-60mm IX-Nikkors that I literally can't give away.

My "hiking kits" are either a D200 with an 18-70mm and 70-300mm ED, or an F100 with an SB-30, 24-120mm VR and the same 70-300mm ED. I usually add in either a 50mm f/1.8 or 90mm f/2.5 macro.

My minimal kit: F2A, 35/f1.4, 50/f/1.4, 135/f2 in some little Tamrac bag.

Digital travel kit: D2h, 10.5, 18-200VR, perhaps with no bag at all.

There are macro kits, birding kits, landscape kit, and "everything"...

My minimal travel kit is my D200 and either a 12-24mm and 50mm 1.4 or the 12-24mm and my 18-70mm. Both combinations have worked well for me recently. When I shoot with film, a likely combination is my F6 with 17-35mm 2.8 and 85mm 1.4.

My minimal kit this year (and last) is a Lowepro Slingshot AW200 bag, packed with:
D200
18-200mm VR
50mm f1.8D
Sigma 10-20mm DC
Battery charger and spare battery
polarizing filters
Giottos Rocket Blower
4x Sandisk CF Extreme III 2GB cards in a Gepe Card Safe holder
Lens cloth
Microfibre travel towel (folds tiny and dries kit beautifully)

Yes, all of that fits easily into the Slingshot bag and weighs just fine.

Cheers!

Here's what I take with me on a long trip:

D200
70-200VR
50mm f/1.4
Tokina 12-24mm f/4
18-200VR
TC-17

I also carry a Casio P&S so I don't lug the big stuff to dinner.

For carrying, I have a LowePro CompuRover AW. If I have more non-photo stuff, I take the padded compartment out of the bottom of the LowePro bag and put it into a Kelty backpack - the Redwing 3200. It's a front-loader with more space for jackets, etc. The LowePro padded camera compartment fits nicely in the bottom of the Kelty bag.

I've got an Expedition5 backpack that is always loaded with:

D70
Sigma 14mm f/2.8
Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8
Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8
TC14EII and TC20II Nikon teleconverters
Nikon 77mm CPL
Nikon 77mm soft #2
B+W 77mm uv for the 17-35 or 70-200 in adverse conditions
SB800 with diffuser, filters, and SC-29
Rocket Blower Sensor Sweep
MC Lens fluid and micro cloths
Lens Brush
extra batteries for SB800
extra en-el3 and charger
bunch of cf cards
77mm explo disc
Bert Sirkin's Cheat Sheets for the D70 and the SB800
Manfroto tri or mono pod straps to the outside of the pack.

When we travel overseas, some items may stay home and my wife carries her D70 with a Tamron 28-300mm, her favorite lens. The body is the backup, in case of BGLOD (my D70 is an early one.)

I will someday replace the D70 with a D200 or (s) or (x) or D300 or whatever, but I'm in no rush. Other than looking for a used Canon 77mm 500D and some NDs and Grad NDs, that pretty much has satisfied my NAS for now.

My travel kit is varied and may be film or digital or a combination. It rarely includes the 80-200 f/2.8 AFS because for my travel weight is a great concern. Travel often is a result of business and I'm already heavily burdened by the traveling office.

If digital, the kit may include a combination of AF and AIS lenses. The latter are usually tele lenses just in case.

More and more it's just a D200 with 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 AFS DX and 35mm f/2 AFD with, 2-2GB cards, blower, and possibly a strobe.

I just spent a week in Atlanta on business. My kit was a F3, 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.4 and 105mm f/2.5 plus a small strobe and table-top tripod. I did not use either the 50 or strobe, but over half the photos were taken at night with the tripod. The 35mm was used most and the f/1.4 turned out to be essential.

Each trip is a little different, and the kit is tailored for best guess photo opportunities.

A couple of recent trips included only my F6 and 35mm f/1.4 AIS. I don't usually take as many photos with film as with digital. I alternate between the F6 and F3 (it's a mood thing ).

Best Regards,

Roger
It is still ISO, aperture and shutter speed, right?

My travel kit would be:
D200 with three 1Mb cards
28/2 AIS or 35/2 AI's (always some hesitation there, as I don't take usually the 20/2.8D)
50/1.4 AI's
85/2 AIS
And when I can the 180/2.8 AIS.
Table tripod
Epson 2000 or Apple 12" Powerbook (the Epson 2000 being quite sufficient most of times for a one week trip)
No photo bag but some satchels of the sort kids use to go to school with (crumpler)...
