"Your favorite and most compelling images ever seen"

Burnet, US

Evening.....

List your most compelling and moving images that you have ever seen...

Some of mine are: (and in no particular order)

1. The image of the Earth Rise over the lunar horizon from the Apollo mission..

2. The Afghan girl..

3. Vietnam image of the young girl (whose clothes had been burned off) running away from her village..

4. Vietnam image of the man being executed...

5. An image of Jackie Kennedy draping herself over the body of J.F.K. after he had been shot...

6. The 9-11 "Iwo Jima" image at ground zero...

Just a few,

Mark in Austin

ps..sorry that I cannot be more specific with any of the images above, especially if they have an actual "title"...

For me the first compelling image would be the picture of the 5 US Marines raising the Stars and Stripes on Mt Surabachi after the Battle of Iwo Jima. In my mind it is one of the greatest B&W images taken.
Second would be the Afghan girl on cover of National Geographic.

And one I've always felt is somewhat a cousin to the one of the marines, is the firefighters raising the flag over ground zero last fall at the WTC.

Though choice. The first time I saw the June 1985 issue of National Geographic, Steve McCurry's photograph of the "Afghan Girl" made a deep and lasting impression on me. Whenever I photograph people, I think of that photograph.

As a point of intrest, there is a good story about that photograph at:

Good Shooting,

My most compelling image is a little differnt the rest of you. The one picture that put me on this road of photographic addiction is the first picture I ever took and developed myself. I was in the 8th grade and taking a photography class at school. When I viewed that picture slowly coming to life in front of me from a blank piece of white paper I was hooked.

I have a list too.
One of my favorites is the 1973 image by Sal Veder of the family running toward the returning POW, Lt.Col. Robert Stirm. Captures that moment of joy and elation.

Some others are:

1936 Migrant Mother by Dorthea Lange

1937 Louisville Flood/American Way by Margaret Bourke-White

1948 Babe Ruth Bows Out by Nat Fein

1963 LBJ's Swearing In by Cecil Stroughton

1963 Ruby Shoots Oswald by Bob Jackson

1965 Cassius Clay in Ring by Neil Leifer

1970 Kent State/Girl over Slain Student by John Filo

1976 Man Spearing Another Man with American Flag by Stanley Forman

1995 Oklahoma City/Fireman with Wounded Baby by Charles Porter IV

Of course, there are others, some already mentioned.

The 1976 Stanley Forman can be seen at:

The rest and more like them can be seen at:

How about Robert Capa's "Death of a union soldier"? I found that pretty intense.

Also from 9/11 is the photo of rescue workers carrying the lifeless body of F.D.N.Y. Chaplain Father Michael Judge from the site of the wreckage.

This, IMHO, is the finest photograph coming out of the 9/11 attacks -- a smidge better than the flag photo, which I think is a close second.

Duck...

I have always thought of that one...

That image is now made so much more sad, because JFK, Jr. and his lovely wife died in that senseless plane crash....

Thanks for posting it...
