"Worst use of a Nikon"

OK, this is probably unethical, but for those who think that we sometimes spend too much time talking about equipment, rather than photography, consider the alternative--(and I mean no disrespect to the artist or the discussion participants):

OK, it's been a long day and maybe I'm a little slow. I don't get it. Scott, can you explain what the heck your point is?

I just thought the discussion (scroll down the page) about the photograph was interesting, especially considering the photograph. Sheeesh---let me crawl back under my rock....

I don't know how this will be recieved but the joke on us about the triviality of our hardware discussions that was made by the original link might have missed the mark. The talk of each list reflects the participents. Nikonians seem to be a hardware driven crew. To chat about glass, bodies and film stirs our souls (OK a little overdramatic) while the other list...well I am not sure where they're at but they really attack each other quite strongly.
I think that even if the topics here didn't interest me I would rather be here than there because Nikonians seem to respect each other even when we disagree. That alone makes this a fun place to be .

Okay, I'll bite.

The worst use of a Nikon is not lousy pictures. At least the person responsible for lousy pictures is taking pictures. And he might even learn something and get better for trying. Heaven knows I have made countless lousy images along the way. But I got a few good ones too.

IMHO,the worst use of a Nikon is that of a paperweight or status/security symbol. Makes me think of Linus (from Peanuts) with that little blanket he's always dragging around.

Happy day, Jack

Amen Jack!

I too have countless 'useless photos'. They are all steps in becoming a better photographer. I look at some of my earlier work and think, "My God! What was I thinking?!". Tomorrow I will probably think that of my work today.

I also agree that the worst use of a Nikon is not using it. A lot of people are afraid of taking them on trips or so because of someone stealing it or it getting broken. These things are made to be used. You do yourself a disservice by treating them like Ming vases.

Scott,

You don't need to crawl under your rock...I apologize if I offended you. I totally missed the discussions under the picture. It all makes sense to me now.

Hi folks.

I see Scott's point.

I just read the supporting thread for that baloney digital picture. I missed it the first time around. The poor fellow who posted that image is awfully combative for someone still trying to find the learning curve. What a senseless dialogue they had. Worse than feuding about manual vs. automatic, or F3 vs. F100.

Maybe he will settle down, come to his senses, and become a Nikonian someday. Frankly gang, I think he could use some help when he's ready to listen. We could teach him how to argue about equipment too }>.

I feel very badly that anyone may have thought I linked to a photograph just so I could call it lousy. The discussion was the point. However, it seems the photographer deliberately made a dreadfully boring image, set out the bait, and then pounced on anyone who tried to criticize it, rather like a "painter" who shoves his fist through a blank canvas, then tries to incite a riot over its artistic merit. JRP, your artist friend might like this. He apparently thinks (knows?) all photographers are crazy anyway.

The image was bad, the discussion was worse.. Save for one thing.. The photographer says it "tells a story" and upon closer inspection, it seems he smoked something out of homemade tin foil utensil, ate a bunch of packaged meat, and took a picture of his mess. At least that is mildly entertaining.
