"Uh oh, I feel a relapse coming on"

Lansing, US

I need my sponsor, JRP, where are you. I made the mistake of picing up a F100 at the camera shop the other day. I'd never handled one before because I thought it was too expensive for me to get back into photography with. But, you see, I was in a shop the other day, just looking around. It was a new shop that I'd never been in before, and there it was, in the front of the case with a 28-105 on it. At first, I just glanced over it and the other things in the case, but my eye came back to it. I looked at it for a moment and then dismissed it. Just too expensive. $1299. for just the body. Then, just as I was moving to the next case, I swear that thing winked at me. I couldn't stand it any longer. the sales girl, almost knowingly, asked if there was anything I would like to see (I then thought to myself about what a loaded question that was). Then I said it, "Let me see that F100" Oh my, deep down I knew that I was creating a situation for myself, but I just couldn't help it.

I held that F100 and looked it over. I peeked thru the viewfinder, put the center af detector on the sales girl and focused. WOW! that was fast, much faster than my N80. Let's try that rack over there. ZIP! just as fast. Okay, how about something out the open door. ZING! Oooooh I'm getting shivers now and breaking into a sweat. I could feel the heat of my Visa card starting to eminate from my wallet.I then thanked her and had to hand it back to her and slowly step away from the counter. I told my daughter, who was with me, that we had to go. We got into the truck and I drove away, fast.

Now, everytime I'm at the mall, I stop at Ritz and just stare at the F100. Whenever I drive by a camera shop, I start to feel a little woozy and have to fight my truck as it feels as if it has a mind of it's own and it is trying to pull into the camera shop parking lot.

What to do, what to do. I know that buying the F100 isn't going to make a better photographer. (or will it?) I'm sure I can live without the F100 and get by with my N80, I think.

I'm just so confused............

If you think the F100 is going to make you take more pictures and be more creative (in order for you to justify the upgrade), then it's worth it, no?

Will you be a better photographer with the F100. Not necessarily, but the exhilaration will make you push further and explore your inner soul for creativity. In the worst case, you'll find yourself smiling more.
A temporary relief for that itch is ........... to get it, but for $300 less at B&H. And you have us, the Nikonians and e-Bay for the N80.
I had my relapses too. I just got a Carbon One 440 Manfrotto Tripod with a truly giant ballhead, getting ready for the First Nikonians Photo Trip into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park this coming 2nd week of October.
There is no cure.

JRP,

I was hoping someone wouldn't bring a carbon one 440 tripod to the First Nikonians Photo Trip into the Great Smoky Mountains... because after i see one, I will have get one!

As for the F100... I went through the same issues. Now that i have convinced my wife to give up the Nikon 5005 and upgrade to the same N80 as I have, maybe I should re-think this and see if I can get a New F100 out of the deal... Now if I only convince my wife that the N80 cost $900 and not $450 as B&H

I wonder if my credit card limit can be extended?

Hey Duck,

Perhaps you can pass the N80 along to your wife while you upgrade to the F100. That way I can try to live vicariously thru you until I can get my own F100

Micheal,

I did it, I took your advice!
I purchase my wife a Nikon N80 (code name F100)

When the B&H shipment arrives, I will have to first remove the New F100, along with the ten thousand styrofoam peanuts, the packing slip, and then replace that with my old Nikon N80, in its original box, along with the MB16 grip... type a false B&H invoice, and stuff it all back into the box, along with five thousand styrofoam peanuts, hand it to my wife and say "I LOVE YOU"

I hope this will work, because if not… well, I guess I will have to miss the First and Second, Nikon Photo adventures… maybe even the third…

I don’t think I could have been this devious, if it weren’t for you fellow Nikonians! Thanks all… If any of you have a better idea, then plase let me know quick, that B&H box should be arriving in the next two days... yeah!

Actually, My wife has now joined me in my photographic passion… I had purchased her a Nikon Coolpix 880, for those quick shots of our 13month old running around the house. A perfect camera for those moments. She has pushed me to start our photography business, and without her I would never do it… So, I have asked her to join me on my photo shoots; a wedding on August 19th, a few mother and daughter in parks outings next week… She is excited that I have the confidence in her to take good pictures, and I do! But, her dilemma was that she wasn’t sure if she wanted to spend $500 on a N80, so, as the faithful husband I am, I made the decision for her, I bought me a F100 and gave her my N80… smart move!

I don't know about a Boxster, but I'm sure a Lamborghini Diablo would have some impact. But, I truly believe a Hummer is more my style. I prefer to go thru, instead of around.

As for the F100, I will have to ponder that purchase some more. If the cravings return, I'll have to log on to Nikonians and call for an immediate PA(photoholics anonymous) meeting.

P.S Knowing that I can get the F100 for $350 cheaper really helps fight off the cravings

Get a grip---I mean, for the N80. If you don't already have one, it's a cheap and very useful way to make a new camera out of the N80. And you will be able to shoot one-handed with zooms, something that is practically impossible with the N80 as-is, and would probably hurt after awhile with the F100.---scott

Thanks JRP but you needed to post the picture about 48 hours earlier. Then I wouldn't have walked out of the store with a new 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 or succumbed to the used SB-24 sitting temptingly in the second-hand cabinet.

Oh well.

Be gentle. I'm relatively new to this but having a ball doing it.

Went down to the lake this morning with the 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 on my F80. Here are some of the results. All shot on Fuji Superia 400, handheld. I have the standard Hoya 77mm UV(0) double-coated filter in place and had the HB-23 lens hood attached.

http://www.tasm.net/photo/misc/lake1.jpg
At the full 18mm, f8.

http://www.tasm.net/photo/misc/lake2.jpg
Stopped down to around f16 IIRC. Also at 18mm. Just wanted to see what would happen.

http://www.tasm.net/photo/misc/swans.jpg
These guys just swam up. Spot metered on the swan on the left.

I plan to head out this weekend with some Reala and really test this baby but I love it so far. Focus is nice and fast, no hunting, vignetting seems to be at a minimum but I'm no expert either.

When I get some more images I'll post them in the Nikkors forum.

Cheers,

Mike,

I am going to be brutally honest with you. You have went out and bought an N80 already. What does the F100 offer you that the N80 does not?? How will it make you a better shooter? If you just use Program Mode on your N80, how will just using Program Mode on the F100 be any better? Assuming you get what you paid when you sell you N80, is the F100 worth $X amount more (or $X+ if you do not break even with the sale of your N80)?

A couple friends of mine and I were talking about this gadget addiction we all fall into. We have a pact. It is called STW (Stop. Think. Wait.). When you feel a passion purchase coming on, don't give into it. Think about why you want to make said purchase. What will it gain you? Wait a bit and see if it was a momentary thing or if it is something you really want/need.

I have been in the waiting phase for a film scanner for about 6 months now. I know I will eventually get one; it is just a matter of time. BUT I want to make sure it is something I need. Not just something I want.

My name is Johnny and I have an addiction called photography but I'm trying real hard to be the shepard for other lost sheep.

I emailed Mike earlier about Nikonaholism. I mentioned that I was lucky no local stores had the F100 at $999. Today, I found my local shop now has the F100 at.... you guessed it $999. HELP!!! I'm thinking of starting myself on Prozac, but I'm not sure it will help. I'm thinking about joining you in TN in October, and I wanted to show off my spiffy new camera. We really need to set up local chapters for Nikonaholics Anonymous meetings. I think I may be able to get Prozac at wholesale if others need help, too. I'm good friends with the sales re
Luckily, the store didn't have the F100 in stock, so I may be able to resist the urge.

Have Fun,

BTW, if I come to TN, I can arrange to do medical consults in exchange for Nikon Gea

Before I found this list, I was quite content with my F80 and its kit 28-80mm 'D' lens and a cheap-ish Slik tripod. Now I'm the owner of a more expensive Manfrotto, a ball-head, a few camera bags, a 70-300mm 'ED' lens, a 6T close-up and am saving up for a 24mm as well as a 50mm 1.4 prime lens.

Isn't Nikonians bad for my bank account?!!
Now I'm hoping it'll do wonders for my photography.

Just bring the Prozac and we will all be happy. (I read that there is now a generic form of Prozac, which is cheaper.)
As for NC in Oct. we welcome you, F100 or not, just decide quick or you may have to sleep in a car. Of course with enough Prozac you may not care.

I have yet to encounter a F100, but I did have a moment alone with an F5...ever since that day I've become the ideal penny pincher just waiting for the day when one will be mine. Although, after reading all this about the F100 I'm begining to be drawn to this more pocket friendly gem over the F5....

...you mean to tell me when I get my F100 (today! yeah) that I will then have an urge to lust over a F5!

How long do I have before the enjoyment of having a new F100 will wear off and the lusting of the F5 take over.... come on Doc! tell me... how long do I have! I can take it....

Oh god, when will this madness end... will it go on forever. What am I to do... I guess I will sit here and wait for the FedEx guy to bring me that brown bundle of joy... a B&H box with my New F100 onboard.

See ya'll in Asheville

The fun of it is that it is indeed a never ending story.
Believe it, this comes from a guy that started out with a modest Nikkormat FS in the early 60´s and is now enjoying his 7th uprade to the fullest (just as the previous ones).

Your lust for the F5 may end once you pick it up. Very nice camera, but way too heavy for me. I've never really been all that fond of fat chicks either Probably cause I'm a fat guy!(hope I didn't offend anyone)

Gary F. I had the exact experience several days ago, sweaty palms and everything. It felt so right in my hands but I got the N80 just 6 weeks ago....I've been fighting going back to the camera shop because it will be singing it's siren song to me from the shelf. What to do, what to do.....GF.

Good idea. Stay away. I went down to the camera store today to start stocking up on film for our overseas trip in October and they had just received a new 80-200 AF-S. "Can I have a look?".

And I had been telling myself I was happy with my lens stable.

Just as well the credit cards got all eaeten up with airfares coz there's no room for that bad boy in my camera bag at the moment anyway.

But I think I know what I'm saving for when I get back.

Cheers,
