"Outdoor Photographer magazine subscription"

London, GB

Hi everyone
A month ago, I subscribed online to the excellent Outdoor Photographer magazine (http://www.outdoorphotographer.com) which is based in the US and many of you are probably very familiar with it...! I waited (patiently!) for the magazine to arrive on my doorstep, but alas - nothing! When I checked my account on their website, it said the Expiry Order was J/A 02 (July/August next year?!) and my balance was null (whatever that means).

However, it's been well over a month since I subscribed and still nothing has appeared in my mailbox. Am I being too impatient?

OK, going back to my corner now...

Outdoor Photographer, the expensive "manufactures' glossy brochures" ??
jasper
p/s-the only thing i enjoy is the columns by Galen Rowell and the like at the front which gives a tiny glimpse into the thinking behind some of the great photos.

Hi Jasper,
...fair enough, but have you read any of the photo magazines available in the UK? There are a couple I pick up now and then... "Amateur Photographer", which is rather biased towards Canon (lots of glossy adverts etc) and "Outdoor Photography", which is more like a UK Travel magazine with tips on where to go, what to shoot, rather than any equipment reviews or handy photo tips. What I've seen on the Outdoor Photographer website beats all that so far...

Well, at least I hope. I won't know until I get my hands on a copy...

Jin,
I'm from Melbourne but i read both UK(Amauteur Photogapher,Practical Photography and Outdoor Photography) and American photo megazines(Popular photography and Outdoor Photographer).I try to be selective about which one to buy now unlike 12 months ago where everyone of them seemed like a gem at the time.
i think Practical Photography has obvious Canon bias but at least the UK meg are more critical in their equipment review unlike Popular photography and especially Outdoor Photographer.(i might as well log onto the manufacture website for the literature).May be that's over the top.

Hi,
The first magazine does take some time to arrive, and don't forget they don't have one in July or January (look at the small print, they have only 10 issues a year).
I've had a subscription for the past one and a half years and every time I had a problem they where very helpful about it so if you're not satisfied you can just Email them.
I found the magazine very good because of the monthly columns written by photographers such as Galen Rowell, William Neil, Dewitt Jones and the late John Netherton. The magazine does not claim to be a photo gear magazine and the reviews are very general but who cares we all know that Nikon is the best
Enjoy your magazine; it’s worth the money IMHO.

US

I enjoy Practical Photography, but It is hard to find in my area of the US. I think it is superior to any US mag. And as for the Canon bias, I believe the editor uses a Nikon F100. All US magazines rely on advertisers for profit. All are very mild in their criticism. Peterson's PHOTOgraphic receives the most ridicule, but I find it to be the most useful each month.
Pop Photo has the most ads by far, but it has the most in depth product reviews. I do not buy a brand new top of the line camera each month, but reading the reviews often gives me new insight about my own equipment, or gives me inspiration to try to manually accomplish what the latest technology seeks to provide to those who rely on it exclusively. Outdoor appeals to the backyard environmentalists and armchair adventurers, and the columns are a little more philosophical than informative, but the exposure to the material each month is very valuable to me. I subscribe to all three---the total price is about three dollars a month, practically negligible, and no effort is required to obtain them, since they are delivered. I have a hard time relating to anyone who scoffs at such inexpensive and easily digestible information, although I must accept that prices and availability are often much different elsewhere in the world. Jin, you might consider writing and mailing a letter of inquiry to the magazine in question.---scott

Hi everyone
I've just got my August issue of Outdoor Photographer and while it does seem like its a bit hefty with glossy pictures and stories of adventuring, outdoorsy photographers and a bit thin on technical information, I'm still keeping my mind wide open as I wait eagerly for the next issues.

I still prefer it to "Outdoor Photography" though. But the most frustrating bits are the pages and pages of US equipment catalogues at lovely prices that I know I cannot ever get here in the UK!

Hi, Jin. If you haven't ever seen Photo Life magazine, you might be interested in picking up a copy. It is a Canadian publication that's full of good reading and there are always more articles than ads.

Hi Jayne,
Thanks for the recommendation. I haven't seen it but I'll try and scour the magazine shelves now... is there a website I could check it out at? I've also picked up a copy of Practical Photography and it's really much better than the other magazines I've looked at so far, its reviews are quite critical and it caters to a wide range of photographers. This month it also gave away a free Kodak Ektachrome 100 Extra Colour slide film. It's also pretty thick and has plenty of articles, competitions and various odds and ends to keep me happy! Do check it out if you can.

regards
jin
