"N80 as second/back up body for the F5"

US

Is anyone using the N80 and the F5 together ? looking for a smaler cheaper back up/ second af body .Should I just bite the bullet and go with the F100 or another F5?
N80 seems to do much of what I need at less then half or a quarter of the cost an weight.
Or is this just wishfull thinking on my part?

If focus speed or use of manual lenses is an issue at all, go with an F100. The N80 is a great deal and a great camera also on its own merits, and the pop up flash is something I never thought would be as usefull as it is, something I wish my F100 had.. What do you plan on using them for?

Brian,I shoot a lot of general assiment work comercial events , yearbook sports and candids, and bit of editorial Been bid awkward switching between the F3 and F5 . Have not had any luck with the flash on the f3 with the proper ttl adapter. so in a bit of fear that with only one F5 as reliable as it is will fail me at some point. Had not thought of the pop up flash but for bit of fill would be great. Was planing on mating a 17-35 2.8 and a n80 (or f100) . At the shop seemed to be quite snappie focus wise. Couldn't tell the difference in speed between the n80 f100 or f5. Motor in the lens seems to level the field between the cameras.
Looking for stop gap prior to going with a digital camera .waiting for the prices(just can't justify the 10k for two D1's) start to drop bit and the ease of use to level out some what.

It could be just me, but I've noticed that focus speed really depends on the lens I'm using. From a tamron 28-105, going to a nikkor 28-80 feels speedy. The tamron kind of creaks into place, but the nikkor snaps right into focus.

Adam,I have to admit still in awe that AF realy works as well as it does after so many years of MF and badly focused photos due to my inability to see proper focus on a slr.
I would have to agree when using other lens, the 180 seems to be a bit snapier. as does the 17-35 2.8

What do you think of your 28-105 tamron? I have been answering questions in the tamron forum but feeling bit of a lone voice.

I'd say that the tamron is a good price. It takes pictures, and that's what I need. It works for me. If I were a professional, then I wouldn't mind giving up the exra money for a Nikkor . . . they just seem to work better with the Nikon bodies in general. I actually have had no problems with the tamron, though.

After borrowing a Nikkor, the Tamron seems slow and unsnappy. It does work, but to really reach the true potential of what the N/80 can do with AF, then I'd go with a Nikkor - though I can't afford it.

Other than the AF, everything about the lens is great. 28-105 was just a good idea to begin with. I can't believe it took nikon so long to come out with the AF 28-105-D, lens to be honest. For the money, the tamron was really worth the buy.

Hey Adam & Chuck-
Chuck, sorry that I haven't responded to your helpful info over in that Tamron thread, still trying to make that decision. Adam, Are you speaking of the Tamron 28-105/4-5.6?

I am trying to replace my Sigma 28-80/3.5-5.6 with a 28-105 but there are several on the market now and I (of course) want the best bang for the buck. Between Nikkor, Tamron(either 2.8 or 4-5.6), Sigma, and I just ran across a Phoenix variable-ap. that starts at 2.8!(2.8-3.8) BUT...it's a push-pull zoom, and I was informed that this type of AF breaks easier. Should I even trust Phoenix brand?
Aaaaahhhhh!!!...too..many...choices...what..to...do?

Oh..I can get an unbelievable price on the Tamron 2.8, $570! I just don't think the THE boss-lady will go for it.}>

Lefty , I would go with the 28-105 nikkor an there is a 50$ rebate on it to boot.Thinking of geting one myself at 300$ it would be hard to beat. Also lot lighter to carry around when you don't need the speed.
