"2nd Toronto outing - Fall Colours"

Toronto, CA

Calling all Torontonian Nikonians!

Our first outing this summer to the Toronto Zoo was outstanding.
We had JB, Ramses, Roel, Stephen and myself turn out to walk for the day and shoot........the animals and each other!

Now it's the change of seasons and it's a great opportunity to get together again and see who else we can get together for some Fall foliage photography.

If anyone has ideas, lets hear'em now so we can get the ball rolling before the leaves are gone and the snow is flying! Dates, times and places ar all up for grabs.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Spread the word to other Toronto area Nikonians if they haven't seen this posting.

Thanks,

John

I'm ready and my camera is loaded.

Where - that is the question...
I will let other people chose a location as I'm not ver familiar with the surrundings. I was cheking out Point Pelee but I would image that it is a bit far for most people and we would need to stay overnight.

So - I'll wait until someone proposes a location and time. I'll be sure to be there.

A humble suggestion from an East Yorker in Aoteoroa. (Godzone)
Sunday Oct 5 is Bruce Trail Day.
The Bruce Trail runs from Niagara to Tobermorey.
The waterfalls in the Dundas area are quite spectacular.
They have guided walks for the fall colours.

I don't know what locations everyone is considering, but I can vouch for the photographability (is that a word?) of the Ball's Falls site. I don't think the website mentions it, but there is a nice little gorge just around the bend below the last waterfall. I have probably done more photography down there than in the village or at the waterfalls. Lots of water tumbling over boulders against a backdrop of fall foliage type shots possible. There is an annual fall fair in the village to be considered; interesting for some but I prefer to avoid the crowds.

The Websters/Tew's falls location is also nice, but I don't know it as well. It's also probably easier to get to from Toronto.

Do others have locations they can recomend (or suggest be avoided)?
Also, has anyone proposed a date?

Hi there,

I was at the last outing (as John mentioned) and had a great time! I would love to attend this one too. Not too sure what in the area would show off the fall foliage the best, however, I know Rattlesnake Point is supposed to be quite picturesque (halfway between Toronto adn Guelph on the 401). It was nice last summer when I was there, but I have no idea what the fall would hold for it.

Anyway, looking forward to being with all of you again. I just got the Nikkor 12-24mm DX and I want to play with it some more!

Take care

I thought it might be fun to choose a location where we could do a mix of colourful trees and other subjects of interest. Maybe a nice small Ontario town and surrounding countryside. Here's a link to some tour ideas for Fall colour:

It's a little far for a day trip but not impossible. If you get on the road by 4am you could be shooting sunrise in Algonquin! John has a head start so he gets to cook breakfast.

How about Caledonia?

That's been recomended in a couple of places (within my circle)

I also heard that the Elora Gorge near Kitchener, Belfountain near Terracotta or any areas near the Grand River. Belfountain is a famous fall colours location & can get quite crowded, it is at the Forks of the Credit River.

The Milton area in general...

I might try to go to Caledonia next weekend. But if the trip is a sucesss I would not mind repeating it.

I've been looking for an excuse to visit Elora and also St. Jacobs. Might even be able to con the wife into going to either of those places.

There is also http://www.pumpkinfest.com/

That might be interesting - there are a few trails that we can hit near by after the festival...

But it's happening soon... Not sure if we have momentum to get this ouring going

I have two suggestions to all -

I just came from the Dundas Valley (next to Ancaster and Dundas, west of Hamilton) and it was great. Part of the Bruce trail, the valley has a number fo trails and a main loop that will take you to some really nice scenery and macro opportunities. Fall colours are at 80% I would say. There are some falls that every one recommended but I did not have the chance to see. I ran across two groups of photographers that were taking advantage of the weather. Just an hour west of Toronto is a nice (and close) place to go to. It was a nice experience and exposed 2 rolls, wishing I could had stayed longer but with 3 kids and non-photographer interested friends, its hard to take the time for the rest of the area.

I also heard (but have not gone to) Holland Marsh Provincial Wildlife Area. It's north of Newmarket (which is better for John). Have heard good things about it and might be another possibility.

Sorry for dropping the ball on the last outing guys!

Is it worth planning anything while we venture into December and the holidays for most?

It seems we have another bunch to add to our group if we put the word out.
I know it doesn't sound as jazzy as a fall colours, or different as the Zoo, but F80 has made quite an impact on Nikonians and thankfully he's in our own backyard! Maybe Stephen could lead a walk throughout a section of Toronto where we can try our hand at anything that catches our eye? Honestly, I'm willing to just walk and photograph, I don't want the bug to bite me when it's waaaay to cold to get out and enjoy the sunshine we still have.

Any ideas?

Great to hear from you John.

I don't feel like a qualified tour guide but I often shoot around the downtown area and the lake. One route that might be fun (for those who like to walk) is starting at Harbourfront and ending up at the historic Distillery District. There's lots to shoot around the lake or if you head north a little you get the Steamwhistle brewery, the CN Tower and Skydome, Union Station, Roy Thompson Hall and the collosal office buildings between Front & King. Then west along Front Street past St. Lawrence Market out to Parliament and down to Mill Street.

There is lots to see and EAT at the distillery. Anyone interested can have a look at this: www.thedistillerydistrict.com/home.html Art galleries, restaurants, a fairly new digital photo lab www.pikto.ca and the Mill Street Brewery opened by a former colleague of mine.

Whew! Maybe this is way too much for one outing. The photo club I belong to had a field trip to the distillery and found enough to keep them occupied.

I'd be happy to shoot before Christmas if anyone is interested and would have fun shooting any, all or none of the suggestions above.

Regards to all the Torontonian Ontarian Nikonians.

I like the the distillery idea, or something unusal like a tour at the Steamwhistle brewery. Lots of industrial/PJ/abstracts oportunities there.. plus we have beer

I think the 13th or 14th look good on my calendar. So I'm on.

I was going to talk to them, but since you took the initiative

Ask them to see if we could take pictures and use tripods/flash. I have a property release I would love to have them sign in exchange for prints... ask to see if that would work for them. (had this planed for a while now but was looking for time to do it.)

Hi Macy,

Glad you could drop by to see what we're up to.

It looks as though you may be the only female Nikonian at the moment, however, others may bring along thier spouses.

Thankfully, photography does not discriminate and neither do we.

Looking forward to meeting you also. Keep visiting this post and feel free to add any input as to what you would like to do or see on the 14th.

Macy,

This will definately be an outdoor event as we'll probably be walking for a large portion of our day..........I assume. Minus the time we will be beverage tasting and stuffing our faces.

Part of the draw of the city is walking around and viewing VERY different sights within minutes of each other. Fortunately, we'll have our Nikons with us to capture those sights in our own respective style.

The manadatory group portrait will also take place. Part of the Nikonian 'requirement' is that we supply a photo of the gang to post on the site.

So have we decided on Saturday 13th or Sunday 14th? I can do either. Will people be driving? If so, perhaps starting at the Distillery and doing a loop would work. You probably won't want a car for most of the time. How early is good? 8:00am or 9:00am?

I was looking at the list of restaurants at the Distillery and they're rather upscale (read $$$). They may not be open for lunch on a Sunday, e.g. the pasta bar opens at 3:00pm. There are, of course, lots of places along Front street from the market to the CN Tower. I encourage people to research their preferences ahead so we don't waste time deciding on the day.

I am still waiting to hear about a brewery tour. Any idea what number will be in our group? John, Ramses, Roël, Macy & husband, me... Any other takers?

Stephen,

Count 'Mark from 'sauga' in, but he won't know 'til a couple of days before.
I've also invited Jan from Beaverton. No response from her yet.
I'm leaning towards the 14th that will allow more people to attend.

I would suggest trying to make it more of a walking thing than a driving thing. We could find a meeting spot for the morning and maybe wind our way around in a loop as suggested. Easy enough to do with the lakefront and city core.
I'll review a map of the city tonight to make a few suggestions for stops(food and drink).

I'll update when I can.

Cheers,

Ok, "Mark from 'sauga'" prefers the 13th but I can make the 14th for a couple of hours. If we do go the 14th, perhaps if one of you is carrying a cell phone, I can call you when I get to the downtown core to locate where you are. We can firm this up perhaps a day or two before the outing.

I'm looking forward to this!

Hi folks,

I figured it's time to set the date and time for next weekend.
It looks as though Sunday seems to be favoured over Saturday.
I like Stephen's suggestion for meeting for about 9am. I've invited Joe from Fort Erie that was interested in joining our Fall colours outing so a little later start might be necessary for him to get to Toronto within a reasonable amount of time.

Anyway, I think it's decided by the group that we'd all like to get to the Distillery District on our tour. Seeing how's pretty much the furthest East we would want to go, we could make it a starting destination, or a finishing point.

In the meantime, we could incorporate areas downtown. Any suggestions as to where would could venture to? I'm more used to just wandering as I go. We could do that too instead of having a structured route.

Ideas?

Hi all

I was away last week and just got my email from John last night. I would love to join you if you don't mind a newbie(beginner photographer) along. As long as the roads are good then I can be there early in the morning. It will take me about 1 1/2 hours to get right downtown. I will need really good directions coming from the 404/Gardiner.

That's great to hear Jan!

If we start at 9am, will that be ok?

The directions to our starting point will be no problem! It's very close to the bottom of the 404/DVP at the Gardiner.

I'll see what the others think as far as a starting point will be but I suggest starting at the Distillery area and eventually making our way back to the area to finish with a sit down and a Pint.
I'd even suggest a streetcar ride along King St. to get back to the area to save our legs. I assume we'll end up in the middle of the city.

9 o'clock is great with me. I am really looking forward to this. Now for some newbie questions. You mentioned in one of the posts a property release. Is this something I should be concerned about having? Or is this just if you may sell a print? It was also mentioned about permission to use tripods and flash. I understand the flash part but I didn't realize that the tripod could be a problem. Why is this? I haven't experimented with many different films yet and still use Fuji 400 for most shots. Do you reccommend something different for this type of shoot? I like the idea of having someone's cell number in case the roads are bad here and I can't get to T.O. Thanks for helping out the newbie.

Jan,

I'll be giving my cell number to anyone coming from outside the Toronto area, or to everyone for that matter in case something comes up and one of us can't make it.

As for the property release and tripods/flash issues, generally, photography of private property, more specifically buidlings and structures have a copyright by the owner. By law, you can be sued if you photograph a building, sell a print and profit from it without obtaining permission from the owner to do so. It's the same as photographing a person and doing the same thing. You're profiting from thier likeness without authorization. A property release that Roel was talking about is just something to relieve a photographer of any liability in case he/she does sell a print with a building or property in it.

Tripods and flash permission isn't as touchy as releases. This comes down to a courtesy 'thing' extended by a photographer with some awareness of a properties' rights.
Tripods can be a liability in public places due to tripping hazards, and the possibility of damage in tight spaces. Basically, they're cumbersome and owners might have an issue with you using them.
Flash is different. It's just annoying if you're snapping away with 5 or 6 Nikonians inside a room or building that is used publicly. Again, it's a courtesy thing. It'll be the difference of you being allowed to take pictures or being asked to leave. If you ask if you can use flash, 9 times out of 10, you'll be allowed.

I would stick to your 400 speed Fuji. If you're looking at trying something else, bring it along. We may have a super sunny day and you could use a slower film, or likewise for a faster film indoors.

The good thing about our kind of group to photograph with. We all have a collective knowledge, that all you have to do is ask a question if you're not sure and we can all help each other. That's one of the reason's to do something like this, to extend the friendliness of Nikonians to real life situations and learn even more. I'm excited about it too, it'll be a great time.

Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Yeah, Jan - I mentioned the release if we were going to the Steamwhistle brewery as the site is very industrial in nature and opens a number of oportunities if you get a good shot. I have been mening to go there and spend an hour or so shooting if I could secure a release, but in the interest of keeping this fun I decided to do it in another occation as to not nail us down for too long in one location.

"Sun. Dec. 14th walkabout - Plans"

Toronto, CA

Ok folks.

Stephen has been instumental at scoping some routes out and giving his suggestions. Here goes.

I think starting at the distillery and then walking over to the market would be good. We can then walk south to the lake and over to Harbourfront or as far as we want. Then up past Steamwhistle Brewery, Skydome and CN Tower to Front Street. We can probably find lunch on Front Street between Simcoe and University.
Some local spots include:

Armadillo Texas Grill
146 Front Street W.

Lone Star Cafe
200 Front Street West

East Side Mario's
151 Front Street West

Joe Badali's
Ristorante Italiano
156 Front Street West

Wayne Gretzy's Restaurant
99 Blue Jays Way

Moderate price points and good variety are important so these are good selections.

After lunch, we can shoot the towers from Roy Thomson Hall to King & Bay, BCE Place, Union Station. We can then get a streetcar back along King (or bus along Front I think) to Parliament.

This should be good for 4 or 5 hours plus lunch and maybe a beer at the end of the day at the brewery depending on finish times.

We'll also need a alternate rain plan and a time to call it off.
I'll be sure to e mail everyone with my cell number as a primary contact in case something happens, but I suggest that we watch the weather leading up to Sunday morning and we post here, or e mail directly. If we come to a consesus that it's going to be crappy, we try to agree on here by about 9pm or so.

Here's how it stands and who's coming.

Sunday Dec.14th - 9am
Meet: Parking lot on Cherry St. south of Mill St. see map

Participants - John Riddell(Newsphotog), Stephen(F80), Roel(Ballroom Boy), Ramses(ramsesm), Macy&hubby(Oshkie Porshie), Jan(JustJan), Mark(mg3putt).

If you need directions to the Distillery District, let us know here. The website to the Distillery is www.thedistillery.ca with maps.

Jan - Coming from the 404/DVP is really easy. Go South on the DVP to the Richmond St. exit to downtown. You'll stay to the right to get this exit.
Once on the ramp, you'll want to make a lane change to the left to get out of the lane you're in. Otherwise it will take you to Richmond St. This takes you onto Eastern Ave.
You want to turn left at the lights at the bottom of the hill. This will be Cherry St. Go south on Cherry past the Stop sign. You'll then pass Mill St. on your Right. The parking lot we're meeting at is on your Right side past Mill St.

Questions or comments can be posted here.

Great news!

Stephen has secured our group a tour of the Mill St. brewery at the Distillery for 3pm on Sunday afternoon.

This is extremely lucky for us as they have a reduced staff and a private function later in the day. We can get in a bit earlier, but I think 3pm will allow us enough time to get to the area in the afternoon.

For those that stick it out in to the end of the day, there is a cost of $3 plus GST that will allow us access, a tour, photography with tripod access(within reasonable safety limits) and not a lot of concern for property releases. Stephen has suggested that we possibly pool a few of our best photos of the site to give to the brewery as a 'thank you' for getting us in on short notice and not posing a lot of restrictions on us for photos. We'd retain all rights to the photos, they could be used for display in the store or close by.
I like the idea.

Oh, and the most important part!!............we'll be tasting samples of thier fine beverages while on the tour.

Jan,

Hmmmmmm, good question! Maybe the film shootin' guys should answer this. I've gone digital and haven't shot film recreationally in a dog's age.
My take on it anyway is that it's all relative to your style of shooting. If you like to experiment with exposure and take multiple frames of the same thing, you'll obviously go through it faster.

I would load up on 7 or 8 rolls just to be safe. If you don't use it all, you have more for the future! If you run out, we'll find a place to stock up, or lend you some.

Hi John,

Along the same lines as Jan re: equipment, as I have never taken my tripod to outings (yes, I know it is THE most important equipment ), I'm wondering whether I should invest in a ballhead. I currently have a Manfrotte 3-way pan head and a relatively heavy aluminum tripod (Manfrotto 055wn). I am a little frightened at the prospect of carrying all that! What backpack would you recommmend? (I don't want to carry my Dryzone 200, but my other bags won't fit the tripod and head) I am going to Henry's this Friday, so I'd be able to pick up any other necessary accessories.

I haven't even decided on whether to take my digital or my film camera. Decisions decisions!

Macy,

Personally, I'm not bringing a tripod. My style of shooting is to handhold when I can. Convenience is a major factor for me so I try to improvise without one.

At our first Nikonians outing at the Zoo, 1 person brought thier carbon fibre tripod and used it once for our 'portrait' of the group.

I'd suggest bringing it and leaving in your trunk. If we're beginning and ending at the brewery, that may be the only place we'll require it. We've been given permission to use them at the brewery within reason.

As for the other places we might be visiting, I'm not sure we're going to be allowed tripod access anyway.

Personally, I use a Manfrotto ball head on mine but the '3 ways' work just as fine. I used mine primarily for wedding portrait work so speed and ease of use was critical.

Hope that helps

I've been checking the weather as time goes by. The Weather Netwrok is now forecasting a 40% chance of flurries and a temp. of 0 to -1

It looks pretty good for the day. Once we're walking, zero degrees isn't that cold. I just hope those flurries don't get in the way of our lenses.

Hey All,

Just got the heads-up on this outing from JB/F80. Looks like I'm going to be 0/2 on the Toronto outings 'cause I'll have to pass on this one too. Fortunately, I been blessed to have bookings for portraits every weekend this Dec. which is great 'cause I have to chip away at the early Xmas present I recently purchased-D100. WooHoooo, this DSLR stuff is great.

Anyway, hope you all have a great time. Looks like you're in for some great weather. I've shot at the Distilllery earlier this year and you will not be disappointed. Happy shooting!!! Love to see the pics when you're all done!

That's great Mark!! See you at 9am!

The weather network is forecasting some odd weather.
Well, odd that it was beautiful all day Saturday and it's snowing on our day out. Oh well. A little snow won't hurt us.

It'll be -4 in the morning with a 30% chance of 1-2cm of flurries.
It get's up to 0 near midday and about 5cm of flurries.

I say let's meet at 9am and we'll go from there. I scoped out the parking lot this morning and it seems to be the best out of the way lot to meet and start off.

See you all there at 9am. Feel free to call my cell if you anticipate being late, or get lost.

Cheers,

Hi there,

Due to a bad cold and the heavy snow as of 8:00am Sunday morning, I will have to back out guys/gals. My apologies for not making it - I was really looking forward to seeing you again and doing some shooting. I'll see you at the next outing!

Take care!

Hi all. I made it back home. I had the perfect photo op for you about 5 minutes after we parted ways. Picked up my coffee headed into the parking lot and down I went! Spilled my coffee, banged my knee and my pride but saved my camera

I'm sorry I had to miss the outing. The snow rattled me a bit, but I was quite embarrassed to hear that Jan made it, since I live in Toronto. I just want to say thank you to John and Stephen for organizing this.

I look forward to seeing the pictures!

I'll post some of my own photos from the day, but what would a group outing be without some photos of the group in action?

1. Yes, we wimped out and took the transit back to our start location.......do we look cccccold?

2. Ramses watching Stephen(F80) working his magic at Union Station!......or they're contemplating stealing some candy!

3. Mark on his first Toronto streetcar ride....and we were there to document it!

Nice shots John. Mark looks so happy on the streetcar! Thanks very much for coordinating the event.

Maybe in 2004 we can get Nikonians toques!

I still want to get to shoot around the lake - on a day when you can actually see it. Hope we'll shoot again soon.

Now you're talking Stephen!!!!

But I prefer to be out when we don't need toques! Maybe we can have some embroidered.......maybe ROOTS will do it as long as they can put their logo on it. They seem to do that with everything else under the sun!

I agree, let's go to the lake when we can actually see it, or when we don't face the risk of being blown into the ice cold water!
