"NC PHOTO TRIP, HOTEL AND SCHEDULE INFORMATION"

LAST EDITED ON Jul-17-01 AT 12:53 PM (GMT)

LAST EDITED ON Jul-17-01 AT 12:46 PM (GMT)

Ok everyone, it's time for an executive decision, so here goes.

October 7 and 8, Sunday and Monday nights (leaving on Tuesday AM) - Best Western Biltmore, Asheville, NC (Asheville Biltmore 22 Woodfin Street, Asheville, North Carolina, United States, 28801 828-253-1851 Toll Free Reservations: 1-888-854-6897 Fax: 828-252-9205). As Bryan has noted, this location gives us plenty of places to go at night to eat, drink and be merry. (Might also be a Chiropractor in the neighborhood too.)

October 9 and 10, Tuesday and Wednesday nights (leaving on Thursday AM) - Woodlands Inn, Sapphire, NC (Woodlands Inn of Sapphire, Sherry & Bill Coy, Hosts, 1305 US Highway 64 West, Sapphire, NC 28774, (828) 966-4709, Fax: (828) 884-6233, email: woodlandsinn@citcom.net, http://www.woodlandsinn.net (I have sent Sherry at Woodlands an email to check on availability for five and/or six rooms. She will get back to me with the availability of the rooms. If you want to contact her directly there is an email address on their website for contact. Also, mention the Nikonians Photo Trip, not for a discount, but just to let her know you are one of the group I mentioned to her about in my message.)

October 11 and 12, Thursday and Friday nights (leaving whenever you want too) - Best Western, Townsend, TN. (Valley View Lodge Highway 321, PO Box 148, Townsend, Tennessee, United States, 37882 865-448-2237 Toll Free Reservations 1-800-292-4844 Fax: 865-448-9957)

There are plenty of vacancies at the Best Western hotels, as of last night when I checked.
The Inn was starting to fill-up. Let's all go ahead and make reservations at these places tonight or ASAP. If there are problems obtaining reservations, we will have plenty of time to recoup and make a decision on another place.

Doug

I am now confirmed in all three places too. For those who are reading this, register immediately, especially at Woodlands Inn of Sapphire, he has only five rooms left as of this moment.
Also, I have not reserved any rooms for anyone else, everyone please reserve your own room.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-18-01 AT 01:12 AM (GMT)

I am now confirmed at the Best Westerns of Asheville, N.C. (nights of the 7th and 8th) and Townsend, N.C. (nights of 11th and 12th).
Sent my data via e-mail to the Woodlands Inn in Sapphire, N.C. for the nights of 9th and 10th.
Hopefully all set.
Should be arriving on Saturday 6th, in the afternoon to Charlotte, N.C. to be able to get some stuff on the way, Sunday morning. I'll advice you Bryan (Duck) as soon as I get a confirmed flight to arrange for a meeting place.
We are almost there!

For all of you just coming in from the homepage:
This is the First Nikonians Photo Trip.
After a not that long discussion we decided to go into the
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
with plenty of mountains (of course), waterfalls and many photo opportunities in the second week of October, to catch the autumn colors.
We will make our rest camps at Asheville, N.C. on Sunday 7th and Monday 8th nights; at Sapphire, N. C. for the nights of Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th; at Townsend, Tennesse, for the nights of Thursday 11th and Friday 12th; leaving on saturday the 13th.
Above you can see details for the reservations in DD's message.
Just bring plenty of film.

Chris,

Let your friend know that it is ok with me that he tags along, even better if he had a Nikon digital camera. But if he brings another name brand camera to the Photo Trip, he will have to take any verbal abuse we (Nikonians) wish to dish out... regarding the digital camera! Just Kidding

Maybe we can influence him to purchase a 35mm Nikon Camera!

I called Bill at Woodlands this morning to remind them to check their email. If you want, I can check tomorrow morning to make sure you are registered. I asked him to call me if there was any trouble or questions regarding our group.

JRP:

In response to your message of several weeks ago, I just bought an F100. Very nice. I like its organization better than my N90S. I've only had it two days so am still getting used to it. I got an excellent price at AAA Camera. $909 plus $48 shipping. So I want to get a warranty from Nikon.

I'm looking forward to trying it out on the Nikonian Photo Trip.

Best regards,
Chuck

Got a couple questions:
I've got two tripods, a HEAVY(@15lbs!) Bogen 3051 w/a 3025 3-way head on it, and a smallish SLIK U6000. Should I even consider bringing the Bogen? Unless somebody else wants to carry it...I'm not gonna hike with the monster!

And would it be worthwhile purchsing an inexpensive monopod for the trip? I ask since I will be carrying my Slik for waterfalls and landscapes.
Just a coupla' thoughts

I am thinking that my monopod, although heavy and cumbersome to some extent might also serve as a good walking staff, in case I decide, like you, not to carry a monster tripod.
On the other hand, I know I will repent not having with me a tripod, specially for sunrises or shots at dawn.

I have been thinking about the sunrises/sunset shots and I guess it would be worthwhile that there is a tripod for everyone. However, as I offered before, I have two quick disconnects for my Bogen 3221/3047 and anyone is welcome to share my tripod.
Possibly, for those with extra tripods if you can bring them, then if anyone does want to travel with a tripod due to flying in, then they could borrow a tripod. Just a thought.
A monopod makes a great hiking stick, and snake pusher out of the way device.

I also have a Bogen 3221 with a ball head, along with a Bogen Monopod that I will bring along...

... If you’re driving, bring it all, if you’re flying, bring all you can.

I'll bring my quite sturdy Gitzo G126 with a ball head. I'll bring the Gitzo and gladly share it. It does not have a quick release head, however, so that makes somewhat of a PITA.

JRP: No, I haven't bought an F100 yet and frankly I'm a little confused. Maybe you can help me (or other readers). The price range is from $929 to about $1000. I want a 3-year warranty. However, one place that offers the cheapest price, advertises a 3-year warranty for $149. Another that sells at $999, offers a $19 warranty. Can I buy a USA version of the F100 and deal with Nikon for a warranty?

I am in the strange position of having all 3 of my cameras in repair. The N90S is at Nikon, not registering f-stops correctly. My FE2 is getting new seals. And my Mamiya 645 is getting overhauled. I feel ... empty ... and so unfocused.

Chuck

If you need a body I could bring another camera for your use.
My backpack just arrived to the border and I will be picking it up sometime next week.
On the F100 issue: If anything goes wrong it will happen immediately; I don´t particularly care for extended warranties because of that. This is also a reason to trust a seller with a good service reputation, like B&H

Chuck; just out of curiosity I checked Adorama and B&H to see what they are selling F100s for at this time. It appears that Adorama will sell an import version for $999.99 and the USA version for $1019.99. The USA version has a 3-year NIKON warranty.
B&H has prices of $949.99 for import, and $999.99 for USA; however, they say it has only the standard one-year USA warranty from Nikon, but they have a MACK extended three-year warranty for $59.99.
My recommendation on camera bodies has always been to purchase USA models, imports are good for normal non-AF-S lenses. (The AF-S lenses I just purchased had Nikon five-year warranties.)

When I purchased an N80last year for my son, Ritz camera did not offer the extended Nikon ESC warranty; preferring to sell their own warranty. I called around and was told by most camera retailers (Cameraworld, Porters, and a few others), that I could not obtain a Nikon ESC warranty, except at time of sale from the store I purchased the N80. Well, after a few calls to Nikon, and finally talking with someone who knew what he was taking about, I was informed that I could purchase the ESC as long as I had it in the mail to Nikon within ten days of the purchase of the camera body.
Per Nikon, the ESC is handled as a normal part, it has a Nikon part number on it, and it can be sold by any authorized Nikon store. Some of their reps for Nikon do not seem to know the policy or do not care to know the policy. The stores are upset that you have not purchased the camera from them, instead going for a better price at another location. (Cameraworld went as far as to blame it on their Nikon rep, which I talked to and stated he, had never told a store they could not sell the warranty without a camera sale. This turned me off Cameraworld. B&H and Adorama at that time did not sell the Nikon ESC warranties.)

I ended up purchasing the Nikon ESC from Paul's Camera, California. They even mailed it overnight so that I could get it mailed postmarked to Nikon within the ten-day period. I have reviewed the conditions on the warranty and they do not mention where the warranty must be purchased from; however, the 10-day mail in period for the paperwork is well stated and legally binding, if they decided to pursue the matter. I on the other hand was ready, willing and able to pursue the matter and obtain the warranty, whether or not stores such as Cameraworld were lying about Nikon's policy or not.

Sorry for the long tirade and I guess I got off on the main question. Personally, I would go with the Nikon USA version with the three-year ESC from Nikon that is available from Adorama.

Doug, JRP:

Thanks. The reason I'm considering an extended warranty is because my N90S (no extended warranty) started flaking out on me. As I mentioned it was mis-registering f-stops. Mike's camera in Boulder (very reputable) said I had a "cracked mirror frame" and estimated $477.00 repair and said they had to send it to Nikon, which they did. I had them send it back to me and sent it to Nikon directly. They estimate $241 which is much more acceptable than $477, a repair cost that would effectively "total" the camera. Nikon did not specify what they were fixing; they just sent me the estimate of repair ... for which I immediately faxed my authorization.

JRP: Thanks for the offer of a camera body, but all my cameras should be in tip-top repair within a few weeks. I go to London and Milan in a week, so I'm hoping to have at least one camera back ... otherwise I'll borrow a friend's FM10.

Group:

Are we going to share lenses? My widest angle is a Nikkor 24mm 2.8 (non AF). I also have the 24-120 Zoom. My favorite is the 105mm 2.8 Micro which is attached to me at my hip. Is there any reason to bring my 300mm f4.0? I hope to find a used wider angle Nikkor between now and then (<20mm). Any suggestions?

I will also bring a Sekonic light meter that all can use.

Also, regarding film ... I just ordered 20 rolls of Velvia for this trip but it's starting to seem inadequate. 5 days of shooting ... that's only 4 rolls per day. I think twice that at least. What do you guys think?

One more thing: you wouldn't think less of me if I also bought my old Mamiya 645J? If Nikon made a medium format I'd buy it ... honest!

Chuck

I’m sure no one has a problem with a medium format camera in the group, might be good for some group shots at night in the bar.

The list of lenses I will be bringing along for sure are:
Tokina 20-35mm F/2.8D
28-70 F/2.8 AF-S
80-200 F/2.8 AF-S
300 F/4D AF-S
Nikkor TC 20E-II
17mm Tokina if I can get it returned from my youngest son who currently has it with him in China. I guess he is trying to photograph the Wall, or as many groups of girls as he can. However, not sure I will see it before Christmas, when I drive up to MI to repossess it. Then again, it has never been one of my favorite lenses, so I might let him keep it since the next size he has is either the 28-70 F/2.8 Tokina (he borrowed that last year) or the 28-105.
If I do not sell my 300mm F/4 (Non-AF-S) lens by October, I will bring that along too for someone to use. (I have it on eBay at the moment, along with my 28-80 F/2.8 Tokina and the Kenko Pro-300 2X).
The 20 rolls of Velvia might be enough, depends on what you prefer to use it for when taking photos. I use Velvia for waterfalls, streams, and sunrises/sunsets; in other words, tripod mounted shots. For most other shots in the afternoon, I will use a faster film that allows handholding of the camera.
I have not made my list of film that I will be bringing; however, it will be something similar to:
8 – Velvia
6 – Provia RDP III 100
6 – AGFA RSX II 200
4 – Provia 400
5 or more – NHG II or possibly the newer 800-speed Fuji film that JRP mentioned.
I have found that my bracketing has been reduced when using the F5, so I use less film.

Doug,

"waterfalls, streams, and sunrises/sunsets" ... throw in other landscapes and that's what I thought we would be mostly shooting. I use my tripod for virtually every shot ... until I can buy a VR lens which, of course, doesn't function on my N90S. So I expect to shoot Velvia primarily for the above. I just can't imagine any other film doing justice to the fall colors.

Tell you what, I'm going to order 20 more rolls of Velvia from Imageologists and have it delivered to a friend of mine in Winston-Salem where my mother and I are spending that Saturday night. I'll have it and can sell some of it at cost to whomever wants it because I think we'll need it. Better safe than sorry.

Regarding faster films ...
Is there much wildlife about ... deer, fox, wildcat, raptors? I really have no feel for what might lurk about, except for wild nikonians.

I have found AGFA RSX series of films as well as Provia to be saturated and great for fall colors. Not as saturated as Velvia, but saturated enough for good fall colors. Of course, I have been known to cheat a little by using an Enhancement filter. Anyone with a 77mm filter thread is more than welcome to experiment with this filter. I usually handhold 80% of my shots (possibly that is why my right elbow has been hurting lately).

As for wildlife, well, in the GSMNP, you have deer, fox, bear, and the occasional Tyrannosaurus Rex, but they only eat Canon owners so we will be safe. In NC, we will be doing a lot of shooting in Transylvania County, and no one could ever explain to me where the name came from, so there might be something lurking in the woods.

Of course there are birds, Hawks, and if we are lucky an eagle.

Almost forgot, when we pass through Brevard, we should make a quick stop at the local city park and see if the white squirrels are out playing. I was fortunate a few years ago, and they put on quite a show for me.

I will probably bring my Stroboframe so we can obtain a couple of group photos. That’s about the only way I ever get my photo taken, that an for my license and ID badge.

Doug,

Thanks for the info. I'll bring the 300mm f4.0 AF with a TC14B and some 100 and 400 ISO Provia. I was going to try a enhancement filter this year for the first time, like a color intensifier. I'll get one that fits on a Cokin-P filter holder if anyone wants to try that. I hear they can be really good. Have you used yours much? I have a 72mm polarizing filter also, that should prove useful.

And I've never used the Agfa RSX films. What is their ISO range? I get stuck in a rut with Velvia and Provia films.

Lefty,

You'll enjoy transparency. It's just a little more demanding than print film ... less exposure latitude. Just get yourself a good 8X loupe and a small light table for viewing.

I'll take you up on that Chuck! The purchase of a few rolls of Velvia. This trip is really going to expand my knowledge and hone my skills, as I have only shot a few rolls of slide film....ever! You guys are going to enlighten me; finally, a chance to learn in the field how to properly shoot slides

As Bryan/Duck mentioned earlier, since I'm driving I'll bring all my gear...but from the looks of it, I will probably ask to borrow more than I will be asked. (All of my Nikon gear is listed in my profile)

Fear not Chuck....the raptors don't come hunting for meat down there until the dead of Winter.

It can get purty cool up thar in them thar hills come October. From my experiences in the area in October long sleeves for the day, you will eventually roll the sleeves up as the day progresses, and a light spring type jacket or sweater for the evening. A heavier coat is not a bad thing to bring along just in case the weather turns cold.

If a person is considering taking a hike for any length of distance, I highly recommend a very good pair of hiking boots. The trails can be rather rocky in places, and there could be some streams to pass over. If we get any rain, mud will be abundant on the trails, making for a slippery walk at times.

A photo backpack is a good idea to have if you have plenty of camera gear to take up a hill. I will be using my photo back pack most of the time, but I’ll bring along my Off Trail 2 if someone needs to borrow something to help carry some equipment on a trail. (The Off Trail 2 will hold a Nikon F5 with a non-AF-S 80-200 F/2.8 lens attached, and has two side cylindrical pockets other lenses, and stuff.)

Doug,

I just got in from a business trip and read your threads and the Nikonians newsletter about the outing in October. I cannot be there on the first two days as I have to make a living then ( does get in the way, doesn't it?) but I could make one or two of the last three days. I would drive up from my home in Atlanta and try to rendevous with y'all in Townshend or thereabouts, How does that look to you now ? Is anything in Townshend or the vicinty still open , or, do you know? It is about 4 hours by car from Atlanta ( I think?) so I could spend Thursday or Friday with the group if I can find a place to stay.

Bob, glad to have you along. I agree with JRP, call the Best Western Valley View Lodge in Townsend immediately. I would guess they still have some rooms available. That takes care of Thursday/Friday nights. If you wanted to meet earlier, I would say it would be touch and go with Woodlands Inn, but it might be worth a try.

Let us know if you get a room, and we can arrange to meet somewhere, in Townsend either later in the day, or possibly near the east entrance to the GSMNP, just inside the park from Cherokee. There is a ranger station/gift shop there.

JRP, I would guess a few extra pairs would be required. Personally, I use the inner liner with the outer wool sock. As for snake repellant, strange thing is I have never run across any timber rattlers in the GSMNP or in NC. Not sure about copperheads; however, they like rocky, mountain areas.

Do not need a compass, I will be wearing my watch, and if the sun shines, that is all I need to find my way. I have Onstar in the car, but that will not help in the woods. No GPS, never needed one, still remember what they taught me in survival school in the USA; therefore, we can live off bugs , snake , and other little creatures if we should get lost . I make a great snare trap. }> I will bring my bear repellant, though.

Doug

I know, I know, I haven't been around in forever, but I've felt like such a traitor since I bought my Pentax 645. I still have my Nikon, though, and still love it! I wish I had known about this trip earlier, I just got the newsletter. I live in NC, remember? But on the other side. The trip would take about 6 hours for me to drive. I wish I had known about it, and wish I could have gone, I'd love to me my photography hero and what I still consider to be my greatest teacher and encourager, but maybe one day...
Anyhow, my question is... on the photographyreview site, I was trying to get an NC gathering going, I was hoping for the beach, but everyone else wanted a mountains gathering, which I know nothing about the mountains and could not plan for such a thing. So it never got off the ground. But there was a lot of interest. Since you've got such a great agenda planned, would you mind if I told the guys and gals around there about your trip? Maybe the could hang out some with ya'll and do their own thing too, you wouldn't have to babysit them or anything : ). I just didn't know how you'd feel about this, since there may be some Cannonites around... let me know... I think there'd be some interest about this there. Thanks! Hope your trip goes wonderfully! Wish you could swing by the beach : (

Hey Pam
We would love it if you could make it, and you're more than welcome to bring that 645 along with your Nikon gear. I'm just north of you in Va. Beach and will be driving down for the 7 hrs it takes. If you only need a lift, I'd be happy to pick you up. I didn't see your city in your profile;Nags Head/Kitty Hawk isn't far from me, but if you're down near Hatteras or Cape Fear...different story

Anyways, I can't stay the entire trip either...Sun-Thurs for me; again - the more the merryier if you can make it!

Hey Gang!

Sorry that I have been away from my computer for a few days, I have been busy setting up my new computer, while trashing my old one!

I have read some previous post that asked what to bring along for this trip, so I will add my 3 cents worth:

Everything I own with the name NIKON on it.
Everything I own that I wish had the name NIKON on it.

Equipment:
Nikon N80/MB16
24mm(2.8)
50mm(1.8)
80-200(2.8)
SB28 Speedlight
Bogen 3221 Tripod/Ball Head QR
Bogen Monopod
Filters/Cable Release
Campco Photo Vest
LowePro Photo Trekker Classic Backpack
Oh yeah! FILM, FILM and more FILM

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Almanac
October Almanac
Average High = 71°
Average Low = 42°
Warmest on Record = 93°
Coldest on Record = 15°
Average Precipitation = 3.1”
Average Snowfall = 0

The weather in the Smoky's can be unpredictable... especially in the fall. I don’t think we should worry about snow, or freezing temperature, but lets not rule it out. We could be seeing temperature anywhere between upper 30’s (at Mt. Mitchell) to the 70’s or even the 80’s (in the valley’s), so I suggest a warm jacket (remember, wear layers, as
Doug stated earlier, you may start the day with a warm jacket and end the day with Tshirt). I am cold natured and a windbreaker or a non-lined barn jacket does fine for me, while others might require a down jacket for extra warmth.

Good hiking boots are also a must, if you plan on hiking to the falls. Most trails are in good condition, but with wet weather they tend to get a little muddy, and slick. I wouldn’t recommend hiking in sneakers or walking shoes, you could easily turn an ankle and we would then have to leave you there, take our pictures and maybe come back to carry you out… Good socks are also a must, spend the extra money and purchase good hiking socks that wisks away the moisture. Wigwam and Thorlos are two examples. http://www.rei.com http://www.outdoorworld.com. If you’re like me and haven’t been out on a good long hike in some time, or you’re trying new hiking boots for the first time, may I suggest liner socks to be worn under your hiking socks, they help keep your feet, dry, comfortable and blister-free.

Doug,

Do we know of any photo shops that will develop our film in the evenings, or a 24hr service? I have never used any photo shops in the areas we plan on traveling, do we need to check some out? Let me know, this is something I might be able to do, unless someone has already checked on the internet???

Bo,

Any Idea what city your flying into??? US Airways has a direct flight from Frankfurt/Charlotte or München/Philadelphia/Charlotte…(and if you get the Frankfurt/Charlotte flight say hello to Sandra, she works that flight)
bis später!

Dear Pam:
I would love to see you there, Nikonian. Of course bring your Pentax 645. Myself seriously thinking in bringing along at least one of my Hasselblad bodies. This is a trip we cannot make every month. And if you cannot stay for the entire week, don´t worry, stay as long as you can.
On the "other" site. Well, this is a Nikonians Photo Trip, by all means thank you in advance for spreading the word among Nikon users over there.
BTW, how are those beautiful kids of yours?

Pam,
Personally, (and this is only my opinion) I would have no problems with other Nikon users showing up; however, Canon users…no thanks, I visit Photo-John's site occasionally, and that's all I have to say about that subject. Besides, this is a Nikonians photo trip, not a photography review photo trip. Again, in my opinion, if some Nikon owners who browse Photo-John's site who want to become a Nikonian, that would be great.

I emailed you Doug, but I just want to make sure that everyone understands that I wasn't trying to cause any problems, or turn your trip into a photographyreview gathering. Please just understand that I am the type of person who always believes the more the merrier, and I don't see Cannon users vs. Nikon users. We're all photographers, and personally, I could learn a lot from Cannon users as well as Nikon users. There are people at that site, I'm sure, that remember Doug and JRP, and I'm sure would love to get the chance to meet them, as I would. I hope I didn't upset you. Have a good day and a great trip! And JRP, my kids are just as beautiful as ever, but getting soooo big! : )

Photographyreview has at least one or sometimes two Nikon versus Canon wars every month.

I can always learn, and the type of camera the person uses does not reflect on his/her ability to take photos and teach me new techniques or tricks.

Kids do get big, enjoy them while they are young. Not that my boys are not fun anymore, its just that when they hit the late teens early twenties, and they are now taller than you, it just does not seem like they are little kids anymore. Especially, when you have to look up at them.

I hope you didn't take this to mean that I don't actually see the wars at photographyreview, I do , I just most of the time ignore them. I was saying I, personally, do not think "oh, he's a Cannon user, and his camera isn't as good as mine", or "I've got a Nikon, and my camera's better than yours". That's what I was saying. I totally agree with you on the Cannon/Nikon wars at the site, I just think they're very ignorant arguments. But, I wouldn't want argumentative people on a trip that I had worked hard to organize, so I understand your position.
It had just crossed my mind that it would be a great opportunity for a whole bunch of photographers to get together, but I didn't even think about that problem. I guess that was probably why this site originated. : ) I just don't think sometimes.
I wish I could go on the trip, but I am forever broke. I want to see all the beautiful pictures posted, though, when ya'll get back! Oh, I use a lab in Morganton, NC, it's in the mountains somewhere, I don't know how close it will be to where you are, and I'm not sure whether or not they are just a mail order lab, or if you can actually go in and get stuff developed. But it's Kelly Color Labs, and their number is 828-433-0934, if you want to check on it. Have a great time!

Pam, I like to read those threads for a good laugh, that's all.

It will be a shame if you can't make it for a least one day. Is it really six hours from where you live to Asheville? I wouldn't know since I have never traveled any farther east than Asheville when visiting NC. It just seems like a short drive, when compared that my drive from south of Nashville is only five hours (without road construction).

I am not really sure how long it takes to get to Asheville, but I would guess at LEAST six hours. I know that Murphy, NC is at the mountain end of the state ( I think right along the Tenn. border) and I am about an hour from falling into the Atlantic Ocean. I can get to Washington, DC quicker than I can Murphy. Kind of strange, but it's a very long trip. I almost believe that I can get to New York quicker. Charlotte is about four hours from here. Look, do a NC Beach trip next year, I'll be there! But I guess NC beaches is kind of drab compared to some of the other trips you're planning.

Just keep us informed, if you can't get a reservation in the same hotel in Townsend, there are a few other hotels, and Townsend is not large by any means, so you would still be close.
After you confirm your hotel, I would guess the best thing to do would be give me an idea when you will be arriving in the area on Thursday. At that time, if you can send me your phone number where you will be on Wednesday evening, I could call and give a pretty good estimate as to where we will be at a certain time on Thursday AM. Alternatively, we could just meet somewhere in Townsend that night. However, that only gives you one day.
So, just keep me informed and I am sure we can link up somewhere on the route.

Fellow Adventurers!

Just wanted to get a feel for what type of film everybody was bringing and why...

I am bringing the following:

Fujichrome Velvia 50 Professional for the vivid fall colors
Agfachrome RSX II 200 Professional for everything else

...any recommendations on faster slide film, or would you recommend using print film, like Fuji NHG-II 800?

Velvia of course, for those slow shutter streams and falls.
There the new and faster Fujichrome Provia 400F Professional (RHPIII), with "Exceptionally Fine Grain, Superb Color Reproduction and Push-Processing Capability to ISO 1600"
However, I would like to try the Fujicolor Portrait NPZ 800 Professional print film which features: "Fujifilm 4th Color Layer Technology which Provides Accurate and Natural Color, Even Under Challenging Lighting Conditions with Flourescent Light; Enhanced Color Contrast and Color Saturation for Available Light Photography; Fresh, Natural Skin Tones; Very Wide Exposure Latitude Specially Tolerant Within a Four Stop Range; Fine Grain Results for Display Size Enlargements Under a Variety of Exposure Conditions, Availability in 35mm, 120, and 220 Formats"
This is, I think, the natural replacement for our good old NHG II 800 Pro film.

Velvia, for the same reasons JRP and Bryan mentioned,
Fuji Provia RDP III 100 ISO
Agfa RSX II – 200 ISO, since it is one of my favorite films,
I’m torn between Fuji Provia 400F Pro, and off the shelf Kodak Ektachrome Elite 400, which I have to say I’m impressed with,
I will also bring a good supply of Agfa Optima II 100 and 200 in case I decide to shoot prints.
NHG-II and I’ll be ordering some of the new NPZ 800 when I place an order next month for film. Can it be pushed as far as NHG II?However, I have checked B&H, Adorama, and The Film Shop and I have not been able to locate the NPZ 800. I just now wrote Fuji to see if they can locate who sells NPZ 800.

I feel left out! I only heard about this through the Nikonians email newsletter when I got back in town after a week in....you guessed it, Transylvannia County, NC. No big deal though. I haven't had time to check my calendar but I plan to attend for as many days as I can. Will make reservations ASAP.

For Bo and JRP, I live very near Bryan in Rock Hill, SC so if you are flying into Charlotte and need a ride or a place to stay let me know. If you have some time a trip to Charlotte Camera (as seen in Shutterbug) is worth it. Bryan, do they rent equipment there?

As for tripods, bring them. I visited several of the waterfalls in the Pisgah National Forest last week and they are located in heavy woods for the most part and it is dark at times even when sunny out. If leaves are starting to fall it may be a little brighter. They also don't call them the Smokey Mountains for nothing, fog and mist can occur at any time and even though it may block far vistas it can make dramatic shots itself. Bring rain gear and protection for your equipment also.

I would also recommend you macro fans bring your macro stuff. I can't vouch for early October but now there are many and varied bright colored mushrooms to see. Bright colored newts and salamanders abound in the streams but must be searched for.

I have a fair knowledge of the Transylvannia/Pisgah region having done some biking and hiking there. I'd be glad to help in this regard as needed. The Ranger Station at the southern entrance to Pisgah has excellent maps and guides to waterfalls etc. It is located very near some of the nicer falls. I would also recommend a hike up the Lin Cove Viaduct trail for some of the most spectacular long views but you better not be afraid of heights. It is north of Brevard on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I'm very excited about this, if for nothing else but meeting you Nikonians. I'm wondering if I'll be the only one shooting B&W?

Glad to have you along. I guess with your knowledge of the Pisqah area, along with the slight knowledge I have of the Pisqah and Nantahala area we should make some good guides for the rest of the troop.
The Lin Cove Viaduct Trail sound interesting. Have you ever made it into the park in Brevard to shoot (with a camera) the white squirrels?

http://members.aol.com/f5fstop/images/c-l100whtsquirrelnc.jpg

I agree, tripods are a necessity in that area. I have photographed Looking Glass and a few other falls north of Brevard, and the sun does not shine too well in that area. (For anyone wanting to photograph Looking Glass Falls, I highly recommend some waterproof boots, or just a spare pair. The best view is from the center of the stream.)

(It appears that I can use AOL hometown for a place to host my photos to post in another location.)

Actually, now that I've seen the itenerary on the map the Lin Cove trail is too far out of the way as it is about an hour north of Ashville. However, it will not be missed given the many other attractions.

Looking Glass falls is quite spectacular. There are two others along the same highway that are less spectacular in volume of water but with other interesting features such as height and you can go behind one of them. Whitewater falls is supposed to be quite high and I've never seen it. Nearly any sections of the streams above and below these falls are photographic in thier own right as well.

The Ranger Station at Pisgah had a book devoted to photographing the falls of western NC for $16, I wish I'd purchased it. There are at least three other falls of various proportions in this area as well. Some require a bit of hiking but none estimated at more than 2 hours round trip and usually the estimates are very conservative.

I'll try to do a little more research into the Transylvannia area, etc. There are a number of web sites dedicated to this area of waterfalls, easily found via Google.

The two waterfalls just north of Looking Glass are not worth the time and effort to stop and see. Whitewater, which is the highest waterfall (441 feet) east of the Rockies can be spectacular, if there is water. (Woodlands Inn, is about 20 minutes from Whitewater Falls.)

This year does not appear to be as dry as last year, so there should be a high volume of water and the colors should be good.
Pisqah and Nantahala National Forests run together in that area of NC, and they both contain many waterfalls. There are some good ones west of Brevard, outside the city of Highlands. Nearby Highlands is Dry Falls, Kalakalskies Falls, Bridel Veil Falls, and a few other ones.

George(N80),

Glad to have you on board...

Charlotte Camera stopped renting out equipment... that is what Richard from Charlotte Camera said about 8 months ago.

I think Camera World rents any used equipment they have in stock, which isn’t much!

I think I might bring along some B/W film... what film do you plan on shooting?

Good idea about the rain gear... a poncho that covers a backpack is great, along with a couple of garbage bags to keep the gear dry inside a backpack.

Doug,

I have two pair of felt bottom boots for fly-fishing. I will bring both pair for anybody interested in wading across streams. The rocks can get slippery when wet! The best shot of looking glass falls I have seen was taken while standing in the water, or from the other side...

See ya'll in Asheville

There are some pretty large boulders that are downstream from Looking glass that I have used for photos. They do a good job, and don't require you to get wet. These would be ideal for those who don't want to wade in the water.

Velvia, F5, Down the path from Whitewater Falls. Facing east by southeast, this could be a great place for a sunrise shot
