"Nikkor 28-105 + extension tube?"

HK

Hi,

I'm new to macro photography.
Now I just want to buy an extension tube with limited budget.
Has anyone tried to use Nikkor 28-105 with extension tube?
And which tube can provide good quality photos combined with the lens?

Philip

Yes, you can use any zoom with extension tubes. Your best buy would be the Kenko 3 tube set for Nikon-AF.

One good thing with the Kenko extension tubes is that they allow coupling to the autofocus, TTL metering and auto-aperture mechanisms of the F100 and F5 (unlike the Nikon tubes which I have and they don't!) But, be aware that the Kenkos are more narrow than the Nikon tubes and will cause vignetting at the smaller focal lengths (expecially the low end of the 28-105).

You might want to look at the Nikon T5 and T6 closeup lenses as well. They are inexpensive and screw on like a filter to the 28-105. Good optical quality and they provided significant increase in mag factor in combo with the 28-105 Macro mode and allow more working distance.

Closeup filters will reduce, not extend working distance. Closeup filters allow a lens to focus closer than it can alone. On the 28-105 lens, which is already a close-focusing lens that can go to 1:2, closeup filters will only make the working distance shorter and clumsier. In addition, because this is a lens of rather modest focal length, the effect of the closeup lens on the reproduction ratio will be small. Closeup lenses exert their maximum effect on longer focal length lenses. The 5T and 6T filters are primarily designed for use on Nikon's 70-180 mm zoom micro, but they are also dyanamite accessories for the inexpensive 70-300 mm zoom lenses, where you can get to 1:0.8 and 1.25:1, respectively with the 5T and 6T adapters at 300 mm.

Cheers.

I have the 28-105 lens, along with the set of Kenko extension tubes and the 6T close-up lens. While they will all physically work together, there are some practical issues, as RRowlett pointed out. The 6T will provide a 1.5:1 ratio (keep in mind that all of the figures I quote are from my own inexact calibrations), but at a distance of barely over 1 inch. The 12mm extension tube will get you to roughly 1.2:1, but now you're only 1/2 inch away. The larger extension tubes are virtually useless on this lens for this reason.

However, I have used them quite successfully on the 70-300 lens. In fact, with all three extension tubes AND the 6T in place, you can get to roughly 1:0.5 at a working distance between 9 inches (minimum)and 11 inches (max).
