"Nikon 105mm Macro Add- on Question(s)"

Searcy, US

Not having used the 105mm other than just the lens itself, which is great by the way, I was wondering if someone with more experience could tell me if the PK-11A attachment and/or the 5T closeup lens would be good additions to the lens and what would the difference in the two be? What could I expect from these additions? Thanks in advance.

The PK-11A will be of minimal benefit to you. It adds only 8mm of extension and will only provide a slight increase in magnification. If you are looking at an extension tube, I would suggest that you get a PN-11. It adds 52.5mm and will allow you to go up to a 1.6:1 reproduction ratio with the AF 105mm f/2.8 micro. I use that particular combination and have been very pleased with the results.

The 5T closeup lens can be used on the 105mm but I've never tried it myself and therefore I can't give you any concrete information on it.

I agree that the minimal extention will not do that much for the 105. The closeup lens for the 105 is the 4t which will produce a 1.25:1 reproduction ratio. The 5&6t lenses are will fit the larger diameter lenses.

I really can't comment on the PK-11A or 5T closeeup lens on a 105mm micro lens, but may I suggest you look at the Nikon PN-11 extension tube? With the PN-11 on the AF 105mm f/2.8D micro lens you will get a image scale from 0.5X to 1.7X and it has a tripod collar. A tripod collar makes it so easy & painless to change from a horizontal to vertical shot without having to move your tripod, and recomposing. Good Luck!

Thank you all for your input. It sounds like the PN-11 is the way to go.
Do any of you use a rail attachment with your macro work that allows you to incrementally move your camera rather than moving the tripod around? What kind?

I use the Velbon macro-slider. My only real complaint with it is that I find the knobs hard to operate because of interference with the rail itself. It still works fine, though. There are several different brands of macro sliders available, and they are very useful when you are doing closeup photography.

The following is a link to the macro slider page on the B&H website:
