"Vello vs. Kenko Extension Tubes"

US

I am wanting to buy a set of extension tubes for my D800. I've seen where the Kenko set (12mm, 20mm, 36mm) is a good set for $199. But, also on B&H Photo website it shows an alternative set of Vello extension tubes for $80. Here's the link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/787224-REG/vello__auto_extension_tube_set.html/BI/4775/KBID/5289/

The ad says the Vello is fully compatible with AF and all electrical couplings of the lens/camera -- what is it I don't see here -- naturally there are no optics involved -- if the Vello is good for $80, why should I spend $199 for the Kenko? Any advice or insights would be appreciated. Color me confused!

Tom,

I have a set of Kenko tubes that I use in conjunction with a D300 and 105VR.

If I attempt to use all three tubes at once there is enough play within the couplings to cause loss of continuity in the signals affecting f stop.

I overcome this easily by only using the three in conjunction with a focus rail where I can support the lens barrel to improve rigidity.

This is a well documented concern but I am not saying that it makes the Kenko inferior but something to take into consideration when assessing difference in makes and price.

As of this date, I have not purchased extension tubes.

However, when I was doing my research, I noticed the very cheaper models had plastic couplings, where the Kenko and others had metal couplings.

You might want to investigate this aspect of the product as well as the price.

Hope this helps out,

Bob

I use Kenko, on D800 and D3S. I'm very happy, no issues.

I'm also considering the Kenko tubes. Would be very interested to hear other product or brand options that anyone else likes. For $200, I'd expect these tubes to be manufactured well enough to hold even a heavy lens tightly.
