"May Contest: Flowers"

US

This months theme is Flowers

Well, it is that time of year, at least in the northern hemisphere, where flowers are blooming. As always, this is about a good, well composed, appropriately sharp, close-up of your subject. We will likely have a second flower related theme later this year since this is one of the more popular subjects for macro shooter!

RULES:
--Post up to 7 images but only one image/post
--Include shooting info so we can learn from each other
--Previously posted images are welcome but not previous contest winners
--When posting please do so by hitting the ‘reply’ link below this top post, not the reply link to another post.
--Include a title in the subject line
--Capture must be shot with a Nikon camera and any lens
--Comments are welcome but NO public critiquing, i.e., how to make it better. This is a contest so PM's are a better way to offer feedback
--WARNING Posts that do not meet the spirit of the challenge will not be selected as finalists and may be periodically removed by the moderators without notice

The top images will be selected by the previous months winner and be included in a poll for members to vote for the winning photo. The winning image will be added to the Macro Contest Winners Gallery

Have been camping in the South australian Outback for over 25 years and this was the first time that we came across the flower that Australia is supposedly famous for - The Sturt Desert Pea. An amazing flower with red so vibrant it appeared out of place to be in the outback.

Image details are:

Nikon D300
18-200mm VR
Set to Aperture Priority
Auto White Balance
f6.3
1/60s
focal length 82mm
Used SB800 for fill flash
Feisol Stand

Some of you may have noticed this is a DX lens on a FX camera. I originally got this lens for use with my D7000. I was pleased to discover that the vignetting at these small apertures is quite minimal. I certainly get more usable area than shooting in crop mode.

Thought I'd try something a little different. I was feeling pumped up after a few glasses of wine and Iron Man 3.

So I put this vase of tulips on the carpet and lit it with one Elinchrom Quadra head and a standard reflector. D700, 105VR at f/11.

Hi, I was thinking of flowers as from buds to seed formation, but if this does not qualify as a 'flower', just let me know... I've had this shot in my brain all winter, just waiting for the late spring arrival of the puff balls to try it out. Just took it last week.

I hunted the most perfect one I could find (hundreds to choose from), brought inside to protect from wind/movement.

This is a smaller, different variety than the typical bird of paradise. I don't know its scientific name. There are even ants crawling around on the flower that I did not edit out.

These roses were all stuffed in a box waiting to be center pieces for an event I was about to shoot. I already had a white Elinchrom umbrella set up with 2 SB-910's triggered by Pockewizard TT5's set up, so I dragged it over and lit these this way. D-700, 24-70 @f/8, 1/60, ISO 400.
