I took some picture in a post harvest trial to see how long can the papaya fruit last. Most of these pictures were taken about 5-weeks after harvest. I found, for me, some of the pictures not only unusual but quite appealing as an abstract.
D300 at 1/250 bounced flash ISO200 f16-18, Tripod and cable

I like the second and third image. The first, if cropped on the left would give the abstract feel you mention. Be careful eating!
