"Tether software for Coolpix 8700"

Tucson, US

Faced with 4 boxes of rock samples to photograph, I turned to my ancient E8700. It focuses (?) really close when it wants to. Autofocus in SCE9 (closeup) is OK but the aperture is wide-open. I have been using Manual focus in special 1 (or whatever it's called) where I can set the f-stop to the smallest aperture but the screen is tiny and my eyes are old so I wind up deleting a lot of poorly focused junk.

What I would like to do is tether the camera to my laptop and see the images as I work. Of course I lost the proprietary USB cable that came with the camera and had to order another. I have found several programs including Nikon Capture but am looking for more, particularly open source.

Has anybody out there in Nikonland used a tether program with the 8700? Which one?

I think only Nikons' DSLRs can be tethered. Their P&S's don't have the ability.
