"flash - options???"

I have a few old speedlights, an SB-15, SB-18 and an SB 27. I know i need an SC-17 TTL cord for off camera flash with some sort of blacket, Kirk FB-9 for example, to use flash for my macro pictures. Question is, what settings on the flash if any? or do i just let TTL handle it? Camera is an FA with TTL. Is this the easiest or would an SB-21 or SB-29 be more fool proof? I am looking for the easiest and simplest way to do this.

also, which flash would be the best one to use?

thanks!
