If you have the oportunity to, take a look at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA, just north of San Diego.

It really is a monument to MODERN ARCHITECTURE. The last time I was there, the had tours, both guided, and self-guided. You can pretty much go just about everywhere (at least this was pre-September 11). Not sure what security is like now. The orignial Louis Kahn labs are incredible. There is a hang gliding outfit along the beach, and every once in a while, you'll see a hang glider drifting across.

Rob Quigley is a San Diego based architect (his office is in the little Italy section of San Diego) and has some great work there.

The tourist thing of course... San Diego Zoo, San Diego Wild Animal Park, Sea World.

Make the short drive up to La Jolla. The downtown is very photogenic, and a man-made cove at the beach has become home to a very accessible colony of wild but tolerant-of-human seals.

Have a great trip.

You absolutely HAVE to go over the Coronado Bay Bridge (which is spectacular in itself) and catch the San Diego skyline from Coronado Island, which is pretty amazing at all times of the day. And while you are there, the Coronado Hotel is also a must see, as you have seen it in 400 movies and TV shows over time.

I also enjoy the bluffs near Torrey Pines and the Salk Institute, and if you want to be mesmerized by the ocean, go up towards Del Mar and find a spot to sit on the rocks and watch/listen to/be absorbed by the wondrous Pacific surf. I could sit there and get lost in it for hours.

If you are an airplane buff, you could go over by Miramar and catch some take offs and landings there. Or if you are into historic sites, the Old Town area has lots of Spanish style architecture (buildings, fountains, etc) that are wonderful.

And if you are feeling adventurous, why not park at the Outlet Mall (Last exit on I-5 south before Mexico) and then walk the few blocks over to Tijuana? Lot's of interesting sites within a few blocks of the border, and it is very easy to walk across and then get back into the US.

Have fun!

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I just returned from my trip on Saturday and took 11 rolls of file while there. I skipped the zoo and wild animal park. Here is a list of all places I went:

  • Leucadia - we have friends there

  • Encinitas

  • Cardiff by the Sea

  • Solana Beach

  • Del Mar

  • Torrey Pines - went to the GliderPort there - very cool parasailing

  • La Jolla

  • Pacific Beach

  • Mission Beach

  • Ocean Beach

  • Point Loma / Sunset Cliffs

  • Shelter Island

  • Cabrilla National Monument

  • Coronado and the Hotel del Coronado via the Coronado Bridge

  • Balboa Park

  • Sea Port Village - you have to go to the bar at the top of the Hyatt hotel. You can see all of the city and the bay from there.

  • Old Town San Diego

  • Lake Cuyamaca in Cleveland National Forest

We hit San Diego just in time for "June Gloom" so it was really foggy in the mornings and evenings along the coast, so I was unable to get any pictures of sunset or sunrise.

Thanks again for all the suggestions!

11 rolls in a week sounds like you had some fun. What was your favourite site? Let us know how the processing turns out, and if there are any "keepers" out of the bunch!

Looks like you need another vacation to recuperate from this one!

A few things that are very photogenic that are not easily found elsewhere:

In the Del Mar/Solana Beach coastal communities, hot air baloons take off every evening. Great shots can be taken as the flames shoot out of the propane tanks to inflate the colorful baloons with hot air. Call one of the hot air baloon places in Del Mar to ask where they take off from.

Hang gliders: If you go the UCSD (Univ of Calif San Diego) there is a road right by the Salk Institute that takes you to the Torrey Pines Glider Port. You can walk within 10 feet of people jumping off a 300 foot high cliff on hang gliders.

Missin Beach: cement boardwalk right on the beach has unbelievable scenery! Babes in thong bikinis roller blading and other wildlife. VERY S. California!

Torrey Pines Glider Port has a web site. Here is a link to their photo gallery.
