"March Contest - Foreground, Middleground, and Background"
Sun 30-Mar-14 05:41 PM by cchoc

Marietta, US

This month’s theme, selected by last month’s winner, skibreeze7, is "Foreground, Middleground, Background", which is a'rule' to help you create powerful compositions that lead the viewer into the image through a strong foreground element, to a middle ground element, and then to a background element; all three elements must be present in the image.

***PLEASE NOTE: Per the above , images qualifying for this contest *must* have a foreground, a mid ground and a background element - not just depth of field. Images that do not have all three of these elements are not eligible to be finalists.

Here are a couple of links that Darryl provided to help explain this theme in more detail:

http://www.outdoorphotographer.com/how-to/tip-of-the-week/foreground-midground-background-interest.html

http://www.outdoorexposurephoto.com/photoblog/digital-photography-tips/73/

Participating in our monthly contests is a fun way help us become better photographers. We can see and learn from all of the entries as our members showcase their best work each month.

These monthly contests are the preliminary rounds for the Annual Nikonians Photo Contest where you have the opportunity to win attractive prizes and have your images highlighted in the Winners Galleries and published in the eZine.

The top images will be selected by the winner of the previous months challenge and will be included in a poll for members to vote for the winning photo. Please keep in mind that images will be selected based on image quality, subject matter, relevance to the theme, and creativity just to name a few.

The winning image will be added to the Landscape Forum Winner’s Gallery. The winner will be recognized in our weekly newsletter and will receive a printable Certificate of Photographic Achievement.

I look forward to seeing how you fulfill this challenge!

Good luck!!!

RULES:
-- Post up to 5 images but only one image per post
-- This is a contest – Please present your best, portfolio quality, work
-- Include shooting info so we can learn from each other
-- Include a title in the subject line
-- When posting please do so by hitting the ‘reply’ link below this top post, not the reply link to another post.
-- Previously posted images are welcome but not previous contest winners.
-- Capture must be shot with a Nikon camera and any lens
-- Comments are welcome but NO public critiquing, i.e., how to make it better. This is a contest so PM's are a better way to offer feedback
-- WARNING Posts that do not meet the spirit of the challenge will not be selected as finalists and may be periodically removed by the moderators without notice.
- No people in the composition such that the people become or compete for the main subject

CH

Taken on August 16, 2013, at Engstligenalp, south of and above Adelboden in the Berner Oberland.

D700, 20/2.8 AF-D, ISO 200, f/14, 1/125 handheld.

The plateau is semi-marshy, and those weeds are typical of high-altitude marshes. The farmhouse made for a nice anchor point and middle ground, and the mountains in the background were a nice backdrop, especially with the clouds on them...

Taken almost two years ago.

D700, 28/3.5 PC, ISO 200, 3 seconds on tripod. The exif say it's a 105/2.5 at f/2.5, but it definitely wasn't that lens, and it was probably somewhere near f/16

Here's one from last week in Monument Valley. What looked like clouds on the horizon was the Milky Way. Venus is rising over Merrick Butte and has a faint staburst. And the foreground is in shadow, but has a touch of soft light from The View Hotel.

The image was captured with a D800E and Nikon 16mm f/2.8 fisheye. Image settings were 30 sec, f/4, ISO 1600.

Great website. The last photo in your Bigorre category(gascony-photo-

The late afternoon light provided some nice layers of John Ford Point and Merrick Butte. The separation of the layers was critical to the image - the foreground yucca in full shade, John Ford point in full sun with shadows in front and behind, and Merrick Butte in full sun.
