"February Contest - Simplicity"
Sun 02-Feb-14 02:47 AM by dm1dave

Lowden, US

This month’s theme, selected by last month’s winner, kidsthehall45, is "Simplicity"

Not everyone is lucky enough to live nearby a magnificent landscape feature such as mountains, but everyone can use judicious composition to capture a striking mood whereby a single portion of the frame is emphasized.

So this month the challenge is to capture a single (can be man-made) object in a landscape and showcase it in a simple yet evocative manner.

Participating in our monthly contests is a fun way help us become better photographers. We can see and learn from all of the entries as our members showcase their best work each month.

These monthly contests are the preliminary rounds for the Annual Nikonians Photo Contest where you have the opportunity to win attractive prizes and have your images highlighted in the Winners Galleries and published in the eZine.

The top images will be selected by the winner of the previous months challenge and will be included in a poll for members to vote for the winning photo. Please keep in mind that images will be selected based on image quality, subject matter, relevance to the theme, and creativity just to name a few.

The winning image will be added to the Landscape Forum Winner’s Gallery. The winner will be recognized in our weekly newsletter and will receive a printable Certificate of Photographic Achievement.

I look forward to seeing how you fulfill this challenge!

Good luck!!!

RULES:
-- Post up to 5 images but only one image per post
-- This is a contest – Please present your best, portfolio quality, work
-- Include shooting info so we can learn from each other
-- Include a title in the subject line
-- When posting please do so by hitting the ‘reply’ link below this top post, not the reply link to another post.
-- Previously posted images are welcome but not previous contest winners.
-- Capture must be shot with a Nikon camera and any lens
-- Comments are welcome but NO public critiquing, i.e., how to make it better. This is a contest so PM's are a better way to offer feedback
-- WARNING Posts that do not meet the spirit of the challenge will not be selected as finalists and may be periodically removed by the moderators without notice.
- No people in the composition such that the people become or compete for the main subject

Sample image by kidsthehall45

This was taken 180 degrees from sunset during Chicago's encounter with the 'polar vortex'. The lake was steaming and an old breaker is covered with ice and snow.

Thanks Carol. Much appreciated.

This was shot during ANPAT 12. I love White Sands also. It's not always easy to find subjects like this that aren't ruined by footprints.

BTW I see there's only one seat left for the Nikonians Iceland tour this year. It's filling up a lot faster than when we went last year.

Hi Carol,

I am going back this summer but not on the Nikonians tour. It was great, but I want to see other parts of the country so I'm taking a 2 week tour that goes all around the island clockwise. It goes west from Reykjavik and includes some of the bird breeding areas in that part of the country. More puffins and several other species. More waterfalls including Godafoss and Dettifoss. It will also include Jokulsarlon and the waterfalls we visited last year but I'd like another go at them anyway. I'm really looking forward to it. I'd also like to go in the winter for the aurora and ice caves. Some friends of mine did that and got some great images.

I like this uncommon image. Do you know what percentage crescent that is? Or what the time difference was between moonrise and sunrise?

Thanks,

Thanks, Joe. This shot was taken at 5:50 AM on October 16th, 2009, looking to the east. Moonrise for this location on that day was at 5:06 AM and sunrise was at 6:44 AM. I don't know how to express the crescent of the moon as a percentage, but it was quite small as you can see from the highly lit (blown) part of the moon in the photo and it was waning. This moonrise was only two days from a new moon.

I took this photo of a kayakist going alone towards the center of the St.Lawrence River in a foggy day. He was listening music from India that we could hear very well. After a while, he stopped in the middle of the River (which is more than 1 km wide in this area), remained there for about 20 minutes, and then came back with a very peaceful smile!

I like this shot Darryl. Just a little puzzled at the 1/500 sec shutter speed - it looks like a long exposure with the fuzzy water and clouds!?!

Great observation, Joe.

This image was taken last Sunday in Bora Bora, and was an image
I had pre-visualized before going on our trip (your classic minimalist "sailing boat on the horizon" shot).

I was about a mile offshore in the lagoon, standing in 3 feet of water, photographing black-tipped reef sharks swimming around us, with stingrays literally bumping up against our bodies (part of our tour was called "shark & stingray safari").
As I was shooting the sea life around me, I looked up and saw the sailboat, and immediately fired off several shots, before returning to shooting the sharks and rays.

I give that background information, to point out that I was not in a position to set up a tripod-supported long exposure, which was
my original pre-visualized intent. I was hoping to composite a
long exposure capture with a fast shutter speed shot of the same scene(for the sailboat).

So....I was left with the option of employing some post-processing to achieve a similar effect, selecting everything but the sailboat, and using the motion blur tool in CS6, at a zero degrees angle with a distance of 844 pixels.

Best wishes,
Darryl

Winter Thaw:

After MANY days of below zero temperatures in Ohio, this past weekend the temperatures crept into the low 50's.
Even though the temperature dropped again before all of the snow melted, the ice on the rivers did break-up and created quite a mess.
Below is from Squaw Rock in Cleveland's South Chagrin Metro Park.
