"April Contest: Magic Hour"
Wed 03-Apr-13 05:45 PM by Valentino

This months theme is Magic Hour. Magic hour is the hour which occurs 30 minutes before and after sunrise or sunset. At this time the sun passes through the thickest part of our atmosphere resulting in soft, warm light around the horizon. Light in your composition may be direct or indirect. Direct will have the sun in the composition while indirect may be a shot taken away from the sun showing its warm rays striking the landscape.

Tip: Cloudy WB setting can accentuate the warm colors, while Daylight WB will preserve the actual color and may be preferred if you want to show a transition of color across the sky with a wide lens.

RULES:
--Post up to 7 images but ONLY ONE PICTURE/post
--Include a title in the subject line
--Include shooting info so we can learn from each other
--Previously posted images are welcome but ot previous winners
--When posting please do so by hitting the ‘reply’ link below this top post, not the reply link to another post.
--NO excessively post processed images unless that is the theme
--No people in the composition such that the people become or compete for the main subject
--Capture must be shot with a Nikon camera and any lens
--Comments are welcome but NO public critiquing, i.e., how to make it better. This is a contest so PM's are a better way to offer feedback
--Posts that do not meet the spirit of the challenge will not be selected as finalists - and may or may not be randomly removed during the month without notice. To be considered as a finalist the post must be a Landscape - see criteria here, AND also meet the monthly theme such that the theme is a standout feature - what one thinks about when looking at the picture. Image enhancement in the digital darkroom is acceptable as long as the final result looks mostly like a photo - the exception is when the theme specifically allows for digital art.

Six images will be selected by the previous months winner and be included in a poll for members to vote for the winning photo. The winning image will be added to the Landscape Winners Gallery

Good Luck

In response to Reply # 0

Nikon F3HP and Ektachrome slide film and manual focus lenses. No recorded data is available. Late in the day I took this image of people flying kites at dusk. My first attempt at processing this image gave poor results as there was more activity in the lower half that was in deep shadow. So I put it aside and later tried again, first by not scanning the whole slide but just the upper portion which you see here. The slide was scanned with my Epson Perfection V700 and SilverFast Archive Suite the resultant 48 bit color image that was now free of dust and scratches was now finally processed in Capture NX2.3.1 64 bit.

In response to Reply # 0

The sun did set for about 20 minutes in the Summer, but never came up in the winter. You needed a 24 hour clock to tell what time it was. This was a slide on Agfachrome taken in 1963 with a Nikkorex F and a standard 50mm lens. I have never been happy with digital processin g of this image as it was difficult to capture in the first place. So on 2/9/2012 I rescanned the slide with an Epson Perfection V700 scanner and Silver Fast Archive Suite. I finished post processing in Capture NX2.3. I think this now looks more natural and is most likely the best I will be able to do with the image.

This sunset was shot in Great Falls Montana from my back yard porch. I had nothing behind me for 15 miles and had great views of the mountains almost from every window in my house. Shot with a Nikon Potomic T and Ektachrome slide film. No other data was recorded. The slide was scanned with my Epson Perfection V700 and SilverFast Archive Suite Studio 8. The image was then processed in Capture NX2.3.1 64 bit.

I have been carefully watching various zoom taken images. Your 24-70mm (& others) just seems to have a clarity lacking in the larger range zooms. Apologies for using inarticulate descriptions, but "pizzazz" comes to mind.

Could be an "FX" thing, but I like what I am seeing. Nice shot!

I recently posted that one which fits in this months theme. It was taken on March 12th 2013 when this extremely rare event (meeting of tiny moon crescent + visible comet + sunset) happened during a clear sky at Valley of Fire shortly after sunset. The silhouettes are those of the mud mountains in VF.

This photo was taken on October 2011 during the very short Indian Summer period in Quebec. The return of warm temperatures after several freezing days creates such fantastic sunsets. For the first time, I attempted long-exposure photography with my then newly-acquired Singh-Ray 3-stop full neutral density filter combined with a 2-stop soft ND filter.

I did get my boots wet, Michael. I almost always wear (what we call in our area) "Cannery Boots", which are your average knee-high rubber boots. The problem, if you're not paying close attention to the wave action, is you can get your boots swamped getting these kind of shots.

Best wishes,
Darryl

Thanks for noticing, Barry.

In January, I had my first opportunity since I went digital in 2006, to do a dedicated landscape shoot that was more than 75 miles away from my place. What a nice change of pace.

Best wishes,
Darryl

Image taken about 45 minutes from sundown from a little over 50 miles away. Known to local Native Americans as Tahoma, Takhoma, or Tacobet. The bump on the left is known as Little Tahoma. Seeing Mt. Rainier in its full glory, as pictured, is somewhat of a rarity. Usually there are clouds shrouding the mountain and, frequently, lenticular cloud formations just above the peak. When we can actually see the mountain we locals say "the mountain is out!".

In response to Reply # 0

Below is a show that is special to me, Sunset on the Pemigewasset River in the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. It is special because the point were the sun is setting marks exactly were I am camp, right along that river. It is one of my favorite places to camp since the sound of the river sings me to sleep.

D300 w/tripod
Nikon 10-24mm
Bracketed set, HDR with Nik HDR Effects (my first try with this software)
