"March Contest: Digital Artistry"
Fri 01-Mar-13 12:13 PM by Valentino

US

This months theme is Digital Artistry.

As you may know contest entries that are enhanced with image editing programs like Photoshop and various plugins are acceptable. The line in the sand occurs when excessive post processing makes the picture look less like a photo and more like a painting or some type of surrealistic art form. Those type of photos are normally not permitted as they are more a measure of ones digital darkroom skills than ones photographic skills (the big 3: subject, composition, & light). However, once in a while we have a theme dedicated to Digital Art. This month you can let your imagination run wild to create Digital Landscape Art - in other words you have a license to Photoshop!

Including your secret sauce, (methods, software used...) helps others to learn, but it is not required.

RULES:
--Post up to 7 images but ONLY ONE PICTURE/post
--Include a title in the subject line
--Include shooting info so we can learn from each other
--Previously posted images are welcome but ot previous winners
--When posting please do so by hitting the ‘reply’ link below this top post, not the reply link to another post.
--NO excessively post processed images unless that is the theme
--No people in the composition such that the people become or compete for the main subject
--Capture must be shot with a Nikon camera and any lens
--Comments are welcome but NO public critiquing, i.e., how to make it better. This is a contest so PM's are a better way to offer feedback
--Posts that do not meet the spirit of the challenge will not be selected as finalists - and may or may not be randomly removed during the month without notice. To be considered as a finalist the post must be a Landscape - see criteria here, AND also meet the monthly theme such that the theme is a standout feature - what one thinks about when looking at the picture. Image enhancement in the digital darkroom is acceptable as long as the final result looks mostly like a photo - the exception is when the theme specifically allows for digital art.

Six images will be selected by the previous months winner and be included in a poll for members to vote for the winning photo. The winning image will be added to the Landscape Winners Gallery

Good Luck

Great shot, seems a full viewing of several levels all at once. Composition is superior. The boats and flowers are so clear to the viewer along with the sky over the mountains. Thanks for sharing.

#12. "Godafoss Waterfalls in Iceland"
In response to Reply # 0

San Jose, US

These falls have an interesting story that dates to the year 1000 when Porgeir, chieftain of Ljosavatn district and Lawspeaker of the Althing had to decide if Icelanders should adopt Christianity. When his decison was accepted, he threw statues of his gods into the falls, thus the name "Waterfall of the Gods" or Godafoss. These falls are only 12 meters high but are very wide.
Shot with D700 and 17-35 mm f/2.8 @ 32 mm, f/11, 1/125, ISO 200 hand held. Processed in Capture NX2.

Ayers rock or Ulura as the Mala people call it,is an interesting area. Besides seeing Ulura which is impressive in itself, you can take scenic walks nearby, one of which is Mala walk which had me snapping images as I went. This is a scene near an ancient water hole. D700 with 35-70 f/2.8 at 70mm. F/7.1, ISO 400, 1/60s hand held. Processed in CNX2.

I have often seen this building from I80 when heading up to Red Bluff CA, but was never prepared to stop. So when I knew I was headed upstate on Thursday, I was ready with my camera in the car. It was raining, but by the time I got to this point in the trip, it was reduced to a light mist. I first took a few standard shots and then took two series of 5 shots to use for HDR. But this image is not an HDR image, and I have yet to try them. I decided to make a standard image first from one of the first shots. But when I got this image into NX2, as usual I could not help playing around with the image and applied a few Nik filters including selectively applying a solarization filter to get the affect you see here. I am not sure my HDR versions will be as good as this, but they will be different.

Shot hand held with D700 and 70-200VR lens at 105mm. F/10, 1/650, ISO 560.

Color file, converted to black and white, in photoshop curves I made extreme adjustments that turned daylight sky black giving the photo the appearance that is was shot at night. Heavy sharpening also.

I guess this is considered land scape even though it is not land on earth.

Looks normal - but I made the moon bigger than it really was in CS3, and rotated it some, too...

D700, 28-70/2.8, 400 ISO, f/10, 5 seconds on tripod. The moon was taken from the same image, copied to a new layer that I then rotated and enlarged. The star is as it was.

Thanks for that impressive comment, Mark. Part of that "magic" involved the B&W 10-stop ND filter, stacked with a 3-stop GND, which I forgot to mention.

Best wishes,
Darryl

The process:
Convert to 16 bit LAB, CMYK or RGB color space. Each color space creates different colors.
Duplicate the image and invert the colors of the duplicate (Ctl-I on the PC)
Copy the duplicate over the original as a layer with the "Pin Light" blending option.
Flatten the layers and tweak with Levels.

The Pin Light option swaps the darkest and lightest tones and some colors in a only small band of Luminosity, leaving the other luminosities alone.

The rest of my images below are the result of some variation of this process

Since I already have 7 images posted and the call is for more enhanced images, please remove my Godafoss waterfall image from Iceland and replace it with this image which is closer to the contest intent.

This is a composite of many pictures. Sky is from sky shot around my house with D200. Haystacks are colorized BW shot taken with Nikon FTN. Animals were taken from outdoor public art displays in Amsterdam, Vancouver and Florida with a Nikon E950. All were combined in Photoshop using extract tool for the animals, and layers, fills and masks for the rest.

Finally one more "shopped" Image. Please remove Lucerne at Night and replace it with the following.

Carson Mansion in Eureka CA is one of the most photographed examples of Victorian architecture in the United States. Unfortunately it is private property so no tours of the inside are allowed.

Shot with D700 and 17-35 mm f/2.8 zoom at 24mm. F/3.2, 1/3200, ISO 200. The image was processed in Capture NX2 with NIK filters. First as a straight color shot, then made to look like and old photo and finally Solarized with a NIK filter and then moved to PS CS5 Extended where a moon was added to the composite, and finally this version where witch and ghost were added in a composite after creating them in Photoshop CS3 Extended.

Interesting set up for this shot - climb down several ledges, set up and then hang onto tree while leaning out over the drop off (about 90 feet)...only way to get to a spot where you can capture all 3 little waterfalls - well worth the effort.

Nikon D700, Nikkor 300mm f/4.0 @300mm, 1/640 s, f/4, ISO 500, matrix metering, handheld.

I used Color Efex Filter Pro 4 called “Detail Extractor”, which made the texture of the forest in the background look lively. For the hazy atmosphere over the lake I applied another Color Efex Filter Pro 4 “Graduated Fog".
