"February Contest: Skies"
Fri 01-Feb-13 02:21 AM by dm1dave

US

This months theme is Skies. Skies can make or break a composition and for this one we want the sky to be the subject itself. The sky can including everything from the drama of an approaching storm, magnificent cloud patterns, a colorful transition of orange to blue during magic hour... As the subject your entry is expected to make the sky the attention grabber. It can occupy 1/3, 2/3 or even 7/8 of the composition, or whatever you think works best.

RULES:
--Post up to 7 images but ONLY ONE PICTURE/post
--Include a title in the subject line
--Include shooting info so we can learn from each other
--Previously posted images are welcome but ot previous winners
--When posting please do so by hitting the ‘reply’ link below this top post, not the reply link to another post.
--NO excessively post processed images unless that is the theme
--No people in the composition such that the people become or compete for the main subject
--Capture must be shot with a Nikon camera and any lens
--Comments are welcome but NO public critiquing, i.e., how to make it better. This is a contest so PM's are a better way to offer feedback
--Posts that do not meet the spirit of the challenge will not be selected as finalists - and may or may not be randomly removed during the month without notice. To be considered as a finalist the post must be a Landscape - see criteria here, AND also meet the monthly theme such that the theme is a standout feature - what one thinks about when looking at the picture. Image enhancement in the digital darkroom is acceptable as long as the final result looks mostly like a photo - the exception is when the theme specifically allows for digital art.

Six images will be selected by the previous months winner and be included in a poll for members to vote for the winning photo. The winning image will be added to the Landscape Winners Gallery

Good Luck

Mackenzie River sunset in the North West Territories Canada. Don't know if this qualifies as "sky".

Cold weather photography makes a VR lens your best friend. Think violent shivering.

In this photo of a sunset taken during the Indian Summer over the St-Laurent River in Neuville (Quebec), the clouds are truly making the photograph as they look like the rays of the sun. This effect was accentuated by the use of my Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 fisheye lens.

The title I gave to this photo was "Soleils Brillants", i.e. Bright Suns, where the plural form indicates the two suns and the name "Soleil brillant" is also the name of the best type of sweet corn for which Neuville is famous for.

This is what my wife told me when I was making photographs of the sunset over the St-Laurent River, in Neuville, Quebec. The sunset was great, but sometimes you must also look around, especially behind you as there may be some great skies you may not see! Thanks to my wife, I could photograph this one.

This photo was taken before sunrise at Mono Lake, California. Sunrises and sunsets are amongst the nicest events one can observe, they contribute to make human beings feel great solely by looking at them. Dean,
Very nice capture - great job of capturing some pretty nice color saturation for a moonlit scene. Shooting at this high of ISO, did you have to use some type of post-processing noise software? Haven't shot much at these ISO ranges, just curious.

(This one may be controversial, I see the gray sky and smoke patterns as the dominant subject - sky, but understand if some choose to focus on the plane at the bottom of the image as the subject.)

Red Sky - storm coming
This was a remarkable sky that occurred at sunset just before a storm came through our small community in Wisconsin. Very little post processing - did use NIK Noise to clean up some excessive noise (old camera).
Shot with a Nikon D50, Nikor 80-200mm f/2.8 lens set to 80mm. ISO 400, f/3.3, 1/750, tripod used. Auto WB.

This was a night time storm in Wisconsin. I had a tripod set up with my Nikon D300, an 18-200mm Nikor lens set to 48mm, and a Lightning Trigger. I put the set up in our 2nd floor bathroom, open the window and take the screen out. Then I can basically walk away as long as the rain doesn't start coming in. ISO 400, f/16, 0.8s. WB = cloudy. The tree line you can just make up is at the back of our yard. Hard to believe there is this much electrical discharge going on so close to the house!

One calm evening along the lakeshore. The clouds were really like that!

Taken in August 2011 from my bedroom balcony...

D300, 35/1.8DX, ISO 400, f/5.6, 10 seconds. The camera was rested on the railing and I used the intervallometer to capture a long series of 10-second exposures.

This image is the result of the merging, in-camera and afterwards, of two raw files which I then edited in LR3 and CS3.

Very nice photo! Really like the color saturation and that just before dark blueish tinge to the water. Was this by chance taken near Montreaux?

Hi Gary! Thanks for the comment. No, it's not Lake Léman (or Lake Geneva, as it should not be called), but Lake Neuchâtel and the latter city's harbour, north of Montreux. No smoke on this water, to almost quote Deep Purple

In response to Reply # 130

Thanks, Peter. # 4, 5 and 6 were all taken on Christmas Eve, 2012, between 9:19 and 9:36 PM. So it was full-on dark. But a snowstorm was in the process of clearing, so there were fast-moving clouds and a freshly dusted valley floor, both lit by a nearly full moon. I shot in aperture priority mode, and did a lot of bracketing. These shots were taken with either +3 or +4 EV of exposure compensation.

Lest you think I was standing out in the middle of nowhere on a cold Christmas Eve, these shots were taken from the balcony of my hotel room at The View hotel. But it wasn't all serendipitous. I made that trip to Momument Valley because of the forecasted storm. I chose a room with an unobstructed view of the valley. When the magic happened, I was ready for it. It was a great trip.

Russ

Hi Edwin...Yes, a tripod was used for this capture. I'd guess that
over 80% of my landscapes are tripod-mounted. Thanks for the nice comment.

Best wishes,
