"Death Valley Salt Flats"

McAllen, US

Cottonball Basin to be exact, according to the park map. On this day a big winter storm blew through making for some rather interesting light in the afternoon with high winds and cold temperatures.

Very nice work, Ernesto. I love getting out when weather is happening. You sure made the most of this opportunity. I like the detail and sharp focus throughout the whole image. Seeing the frost and texture in the snow adds to the cold feeling but then there is the warm colors in the sky from the setting sun.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate your comments.

Dean, the white stuff on the ground is actually salt, not snow, although we did see some snow in the higher elevations on our way to Beatty and Rhyolite (ghost town), NV. It was darn cold though.

Dean,

Don't feel silly, when we were there we commented to each other how this looked more like a barren area of the Antarctic than the Mojave and the American Southwest. I should have pointed it out in my OP.

I will post some more stuff, thanks for your interest.

Thank you Charlie. The light was there for only a few minutes and I was scrambling around to make sense of the foreground and also trying to capture the gold reflections in the little streams of water. Plus it was very dusty from a hard wind all day long and it was cold!

Ernesto,

The light after sundown, fades very quickly given the higher range (Sierra) to the WEST, (not east as I originally typed) if the cloud layer is high (it was not) then the transmission might continue for quite a while, which all of us have seen (milked ) in spectacular sunset shots from the park.

My theory is that condition allows longer refraction when there are high clouds because the farthest range (The Coast Range) is relatively low as the sun moves way out over the Pacific.

I'd say, you got the best of the light that day. When was this shot (date?), I watch the satellite imagery during rain events, a few times per day, trying to see where rain (IE. Spring Bloom) is falling and this season, has seen a heavy snow pack over in Mammoth, but only a few wet days in the valley.

You mention a 2 stop grad, did you set that for the Panamints (the mountains) at the edge of the peaks, meaning the exposure was on the high side, for the salt and reflection?

Thanks! Great image.

Rob,

This was taken on January 10, 2013 at about 5:20 PM. The grad was set at the base of the range, not the peaks. The exposure was 1 stop over to make sure the salt was recorded as white and not gray. I tried a three stop and darkened the background too much so I opted for the two stop and then darkened it a little in post process to remove the almost blown out center of the sunlight.

In your first sentence you mention the Sierra in the "east" - don't you mean west? A little confused about that statement. Anyway, thanks for the comments.

Thanks Ernesto for the geography lesson...(corrected above).

I appreciate the explanation about the filter, and note also that Ramon used a similar one on his trip into the Mesquite dune field.

I've not incorporated these of late (busy shooting D800 video with a ND Fader) but now I am anxious to refine the stills aspect to try similar methods so any lesson, whether in topography (sheepish...) or technical is worth the time to ask, and why this site is valuable.

The 3 weeks since I was there (departed on the 2nd) saw below normal temperatures, with jet stream moving South around a stubborn high parked offshore, so the brunt of arctic air did what the weather TV people here call an inside slider right down over the great basin which the park is part of (also part of the high Mojave).

The results as you know, windy and cold, and I'm glad you got this shot.

Did you check the histogram, with the 3 stop before the quick change to the 2 stop?

Or is it just instinct after years in the field experiencing Southwest terrain?

Thanks,

Rob

Rob,

No, I didn't check the histogram on this one, there was little time for that. Just experience, plus I had both filters in my pocket at the time.

I must add this observation. This was my first trip with the D800 and I found that the dynamic range is so improved over my previous D700 and D300 I noticed I was using less filtration as a whole. Where I usually would instinctively pull out a 3-stop grad I only needed a two stop. That was a nice revelation. Now I'm curious if I can expect this with my D4 as well.

"Little time, instinctively..." that's what I thought.

Good observation on DR, and I would guess the D4 as well.

Thanks again,

Beautifully done! Love the balance between the light on the foreground and the sky. The little stream and reflection lead my eye right through the image looking at every detail.

Hi Eric,

Thanks! As you well know when framing an image with strong lines they need to line up to something interesting in the distance or else your eyes get lost in the details.
