"January Contest - Fog"
Thu 03-Jan-13 05:16 PM by Valentino

US

This months theme is your Fog. You'll find often, but not always, in the early morning, on lakes, shorelines, valleys and other places, often as a result of moist air cooling and condensing around warmer areas. It is often a dynamic situation were the fog can change, sometimes very rapidly, before your eyes so patience can yield a number of variations within an area. To maintain an ethereal feeling it can be useful to not use Cloudy WB to warm, but leave at Daylight to record the blue light and then adjust color balance as needed.

RULES:
--Post up to 7 images but ONLY ONE PICTURE/post
--Include a title in the subject line
--Include shooting info so we can learn from each other
--Previously posted images are welcome but ot previous winners
--When posting please do so by hitting the ‘reply’ link below this top post, not the reply link to another post.
--NO excessively post processed images unless that is the theme
--No people in the composition such that the people become or compete for the main subject
--Capture must be shot with a Nikon camera and any lens
--Comments are welcome but NO public critiquing, i.e., how to make it better. This is a contest so PM's are a better way to offer feedback
--Posts that do not meet the spirit of the challenge will not be selected as finalists - and may or may not be randomly removed during the month without notice. To be considered as a finalist the post must be a Landscape - see criteria here, AND also meet the monthly theme such that the theme is a standout feature - what one thinks about when looking at the picture. Image enhancement in the digital darkroom is acceptable as long as the final result looks mostly like a photo - the exception is when the theme specifically allows for digital art.

Six images will be selected by the previous months winner and be included in a poll for members to vote for the winning photo. The winning image will be added to the Landscape Winners Gallery

Good Luck

Morning fog is common on the coast, but to have the lighthouse stand above the fog is not so common.

I live on this course and spend quite a bit of time photographing on the course.
This image happened one winter morning after a night of light snow and then a temperature rise that caused the fog to develop in the morning.

Rob -- you stated you are from Ballarat. I live here in the US but I used to travel to Ballarat often and still have a home in Melbourne. Where is this one taken? The last time I was in Ballarat, the lake was dry...

Anyway, your photo looks good. I love it.

Hi Izzie,
The photo was taken while holidaying in Europe - in the Czech Republic.
You must have been in Ballarat at least 2 years ago. Once our drought of 15 years broke we had lots of rain and the lake is full again now!
Thanks for the comment on the photo.
I've also moved to Melbourne - so thanks for the reminder to change my profile!!

You know when a contest has success when it's the 14th of the month and you have to use the "search" tool in Firefox to check how many you've entered so far

Another one from that magic day back in 2011:

D700, 80-400VR, ISO 1600, f/8, 1/400. PP in LR3.6 and CS3. If I'm not mistaken, this image had never been used by me before, although I had done a bit of PP on it.

When the air temperature is much colder than the water temperature, there are spectacular views that tell us that "today, it's gonna be cold!"

The curious shapes of the ice blocs are due to the 5-meter tides (15 feet). When the tide lowers, the ice breaks over the big rocks on the shore. It is quite a phenomena to walk there and "listen" to the ice cracking and breaking when the tides are lowering. It is a phenomena I like to show to my friends coming from tropical countries

Thanks, Michael. I going to go out on a limb here and assume you know how to post photos to the forum, but what you're really asking me is how I got the white matte with the drop shadow to accent the photo.

This was done in Photoshop, using the following steps,

1. Duplicate the layer.

2. Select Image>Canvas Size from the menu. Put an appropriate number in the width and height field, using pixels as a unit. The number will vary according to the size of the original image. Make sure the 'Relative' box is checked.

3. Select Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow from the menu. Set blend mode to mulitply. Set opacity, angle, distance, spread and size to taste.

4. Save for web, reduce size to conform with posting guidlines and optimize to 300kb file size.

Sorry, let me try again. First, you would either start a new post in a forum or reply to an existing one, such as you did above. Underneath the text box where you type the text of your post, there is a link, "Click here to choose your attachments". Click that and browse to where you have your image file located and open the file. Cick the "Upload file!" button. There are other methods, but this is the one I use.

To prepare the file for posting, there is a post pinned near the top of the Landscape forum titled "Image Posting, Uploading and Posting". This post lists the posting guidelines from the Terms of Use.

Eric, this is the most amazing B&W photograph I have ever seen ! It is truly fantastic: texture, light, composition, contrast...

This one must be very impressive printed on large canvas or artistic photo paper. This should sell at very high price !

Congrats!
