"Shades of Led Zeppelin"

McAllen, US

On a recent trip to Northern Ireland we made it a point to make sure and visit the fantastic Giants Causeway in County Antrim. We spent the whole afternoon there and while a dramatic sunset was not to be had I was able to get this shot with the sun low bathing the polygonal tubes of basalt in warm light. The reference to Led Zeppelin in the subject line refers to the cover of their album "Houses of the Holy" where children are depicted climbing this surreal landscape.

Great shot, Ernesto.

Aside from the lovely light and composition, your creative use of flare is perfect.

Nice image Ernesto. It's hard to believe that this is a natural formation & not a manmade piece of artwork....Scotty.

Great image Ernesto. I'm with Scotty in that it looks so "man-made". I can just envision a sci-fi book coming out explaining its creation - like the myths of old that create a story to fit the environment.

Tom,

There is actually a well known Irish legend about this place concerning the giant Finn MacCool. I don't know the story in detail so here is a link:

It's a great coincidence that the flare shape mimics the basalt tops!

Hi Alex,

Yes, I noticed that well after I reviewed this shot, a fortuitous coincidence indeed!

The soft light and shadows it casts give this an almost painterly effect, Ernesto. The golden columns are quite something.
When I was there it was bleak, windy and a big swell was washing over them - quite the contrast to this.

Scott,

Thanks for the kind comments. The three weeks we spent in Ireland and Scotland was a mix of great weather and really bad weather. I know what you mean, in that part of the world the weather can be very dodgy at times - but it is absolutely beautiful nonetheless.
