"November Contest - Colors of Autumn"
Thu 01-Nov-12 01:59 PM by Valentino

US

This months theme is Colors of Autumn. The signature look of any autumn landscape is the warm color palette, yellows, oranges and reds. Often these colors can be accentuated by using a circular polarizing filter to remove the scattered light from the curved or wet leaves. Warm tones, especially red, go a long way to being noticed since the human eye is hyper-sensitive to this color, unlike dogs or bulls which have very little sensitivity to red.

We are looking for well composed landscapes captured during Autumn that contain at least some warm colors such that the viewer immediately recognizes the season. Your entry doesn’t necessarily need to be dominated by a warm palette since as mentioned above, a little can go a long way as the eye has a natural affinity to warm tones.

December Theme - Best/Favorite of 2012

RULES:
--Post up to 7 images but ONLY ONE PICTURE/post
--Include a title in the subject line
--Include shooting info so we can learn from each other
--Previously posted images are welcome but ot previous winners
--When posting please do so by hitting the ‘reply’ link below this top post, not the reply link to another post.
--NO excessively post processed images unless that is the theme
--No people in the composition such that the people become or compete for the main subject
--Capture must be shot with a Nikon camera and any lens
--Comments are welcome but NO public critiquing, i.e., how to make it better. This is a contest so PM's are a better way to offer feedback
--Posts that do not meet the spirit of the challenge will not be selected as finalists - and may or may not be randomly removed during the month without notice. To be considered as a finalist the post must be a Landscape - see criteria here, AND also meet the monthly theme such that the theme is a standout feature - what one thinks about when looking at the picture. Image enhancement in the digital darkroom is acceptable as long as the final result looks mostly like a photo - the exception is when the theme specifically allows for digital art.

Six images will be selected by the previous months winner and be included in a poll for members to vote for the winning photo. The winning image will be added to the Landscape Winners Gallery

Good Luck

A big snowstorm hit our area on Halloween Even last year....taking with it many of the leaves, but resulting in some wild scenes of the fall leaves against the white snow...

Fall in an American Town depicts a scene here in Shrewsbury, MA that really could just as easily be in any town USA. The monument bears silent witness to those who sacrificed in war, as the flags drape the area.

Thanks,John. Was out birding when I came upon this scene so instead of breaking down the D300 I just grabbed the D200. Still takes great pics IMO and I like the dedicated bracket button.

Thanks Aart,

These beechwoods are special places. Just the trees and deep leaf litter. It feels appropriate to step carefully, speak quietly, and just look around. One of nature's cathedrals.

>This months theme is Colors of Autumn. The signature

1/6 second shutter speed. I just added that info to the post above. I had a VR lens and rested my arm against a rock to help get sharp results at that speed, which I needed to get the silky look. No tripod as this was part of a 6 miles mountain hike.

I'm curious. Most information states that for stitching pano shots, you need a tripod and carefully align the pivot point with the special point in the lens(can't remember what that's called) so that parallax is eliminated as the camera is rotated. Looks like you didn't do that and still got a great image. What gives?

Visit my Nikonians gallery.

Michael,

What you mention is the 'sage wisdom of panorama shooting' which is simply not true 90-99% of the time. Special pano heads to control the nodal point can be critical for shooting a panorama where objects are very close, like indoors. For landscape work I never in my life needed any special pano heads and I shoot panoramas using both long and extremely wide lenses like 10mm and fisheye panoramas. I also do a lot of hiking to mountaintops so high that I in many cases I am able to shoot 360 degree panos to capture spectacular vistas. Anyway, on these hikes, some of which at 10 miles and 10-12 hours long, I don't carry a tripod and I don't need one. The key to handholding sharp shots is shutter speed so when there is plenty of light and good hand holding technique, there is always good results.

One of the keys of shooting a panorama is to know your center and control body movement. You don't want to start shooting and as you turn your legs get twisted and in the way. Stand in the middle of the panorama then turn to the left or right about an imaginary vertical axis below your camera and start shooting until you get to the right or left end. This is important if you are shooting 180 degree pano. A little practice, without a camera, is all it takes to develop a fluid twisting motion. That's the legwork.

The center is important. The thing that I concentrate on the most of my mountain vistas is the horizon. To avoid curvature issues I always keep the horizon in the center of each shot. Sometimes this means that to balance the composition I may have crop out half the sky to put the horizon on the 1/3 line, but not always.

So good leg work, knowing your center/horizon and center of your camera position, and having enough light to shoot handheld when I tripod is not available (but always recommended) is the key. Again, this is trickier if indoors objects close up.

The last thing is to have good software. I consider Photoshop the worst since it only works well when your set is very good or close to ideal. There can be problems when things are not ideal. Long ago I took my worst of the worst and tested all the available 3rd party software. Haven't done that lately but people should always do their own tests to see how they feel. Problem shots sometimes need to have the user make their own control points - which is relatively easy. I personally use PTGui Pro which lets me also do hand held HDR Panoramas and has a masking feature to mask out moving objects like people - see below. There is a non-pro version of PTGui that is also great. I upgraded a year ago to the Pro version after doing a handheld HDR pano with a fisheye lens. That was a tricky one

Below are NOT contest entries, just examples for the above.

slightly larger than 180 degree handheld pano. Top is a crop of the 2nd. Original captures had the horizon in the center which I partially cropped off to balance the composition. The masking feature in the software lets me remove or keep moving objects/people.
