Greetings Nikonians! This will be my first photo post on these forums, and it's a little intimidating as the quality of some of the photos posted here is astounding. SO I hope you'll suffer these.

As I posted on the NYIP forum, where I also put these, I've been trying to channel my inner Ansel Adams lately. I really love the textures B&W brings out and how it shifts focus in landscapes and scenic shots and injects a mood that might not have been there other wise.

Hello, Alex and welcome. I felt the sane way you do when I joined the Nikonians community over a year ago. I quickly realized that this was a great place to learn and grow. Everyone has been welcoming, patient and more than willing to offer honest opinions and share their knowledge. I don't think you'll find a better place. As for your photos-this is a very nice set. I especially like numbers 1 and 3. Where is this location and what equipment did you use? Keep posting. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Alex

I will venture a guess that this is the (original) White Mountains since you are from New Hampshire. This brings back memories of screaming thighs and searing lungs. How nice it would be to relive those memories. I like what you have done with the B&W. I think it works well with these mountain vista shots. I see in picture #2 the cairn that marks the trail. I still have Kodachrome slides of shooting down into the valley at the alpine section south of Tuckerman's Ravine. It was Columbus Day weekend (1977) and we had a frocking of snow on the evergreens that grow on the edge of the tundra. Shooting down into the fog that blanketed the valley you could see the muted reds, yellows, and greens. Thanks for sharing and bringing back sweet memories.

Thanks for the kind words!

The location is in fact the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Each shot in this series is a 3-shot HDR image taken with my D90, with my old 18-55mm kit lens mounted. For those interested, the HDR was done in HDR Efex, and the B&W conversions were done in Silver Efex Pro.

Scott (Bump57), I keep looking but can't seem to find a face in #3.

Mike, the alpine section of the Tuckerman Ravine Trail is one of my favorite spots in The Whites. Thanks for the comment.

That is a very nice set of images. You have some great patterns of light and shadow that are brought out in B/W.

As others said, this is an amazing place to learn and stretch your skills. If you ask for critique, you will get it, but it is always helpful and constructive. The quality of the work of the members is inspiring and challenging!

Alex,

Nice set. I know this area very well since the WM's are my favorite place to hike and camp and shoot - just wished I lived closer. Although I have not hiked to Mt Liberty, I have done the Franconiana Ridge trail loop (up to Little Haystack, then over to Mt Lincoln and then Mt Lafayette, and then down past the Greenleaf hut and down the old bridal path back to the highway - 9 miles. The two mile ridge walk is a fantastic experience, probably my favorite hike in the White Mountain area. I completed it 3x last year. See my post #124 in the June contest from Mt Lincoln looking - the two peaks are Mt Liberty and Mt Flume. Post #125 is a mile further north from Mt Lafayette.

This year I finally did the big one, Mt Washington, twice. Once up the Lion's head trail (the Tuckerman route was still closed in May until the snow melted) and a second time in June from the west side up the Ammonoosuc Ravine trail to Mt Washington and down the Jewel trail (this is a loop hike). It was the longest and toughest hike I ever did but well worth it for the memories and now I can say I hiked the tallest mountain in the northeast and the home of the worlds worst weather!

The Franconia Ridge trail, Mt Washington and Mt Chocorua hikes are my three favorites.

Below is a shot taken last Columbus day, very crowded that day, taken from near the top of Mt Lincoln. The second sharp peak on the left side is Mt Liberty and of course the peak on the left is Mt Flume - hope to hike Mt Liberty sometime in the future

Thank you very much for the compliment Albert! The Whites are my home, I can see my house from any peak on the Franconia Ridge as a matter of fact. Took me a long time to realize how lucky I am to live here.

The Lafayette-Lincoln Loop is indeed a true classic, as are many in the area. Do yourself a favor and visit Liberty and Flume (which I assume you also haven't visited). Both great peaks. As is Mt. Carrigain, one of the best views ever!

Just looked at your pictures, and they're great! I like the one of Mt. Willard (still best "bang-for-your-buck" hike out there IMO), and the Great Gulf shot as well.

I've completed the 4,000 Footers and was attempting another round of them, but lately I've been concentrating on photography when I hike, and that brings me to alot of "smaller" places.

Here's another of my favorite shots from Liberty. I took this this past January, and had to be on the trail at 4AM....by myself, in the dark. Was actually a cool experience.

Thanks again!

Liberty and Flume is one my short list. Last month Mt Crawford was on the short list of a short trip but after doing Mt Washington the next day I was a tad stiff. It would have worked out well in the reverse order but I wanted to take advantage of perfect weather for the Mt Washington hike for reasons I am sure you know. I'll consider Mt Carrigain. Looks like it's a 10 mile round trip hike on Signal Ridge trail off Sawyer river road. The other way is from Desolation trail, don't like the sound of that one.

That sunrise shot from Liberty over Flume is very impressive. But even more impressive is the fact that you did it in the winter and in the dark and by yourself. That is very impressive and a line I am too old to cross. One one hike up the Falling Waters trail last Sept, starting at 7am, I ran into a couple of guys that were on their way down. They said they started up at 2am to see sunrise. I though that was impressive, you did it in the winter. Also, that sunset shot above where the sun is in the shot around Cannon Mountain must have been taken on a day when it was dark by the time you got to the bottom. I have watched a few Youtube videos of people doing the ridge walk in the winter and it is gorgeous. I wish I got into that years ago but I did do Mt Washington this year, and I did it twice so I'm happy.

Beautiful series Alex

I've driven thru the Green and White Mountains several times on treks to Maine from Michigan but never saw them like this. Number 1 and 2 here are my favorites. Really like the contrast in tones in 1.

great job

Peter

Close, it's Alex

Saying that you've never seen them like this is the biggest compliment to me and I really appreciate it. My goal is to capture photos of this area (probably one of the most photographed regions in the world)that stand out a bit from the rest.

Thanks again for the feedback!
