"Perigee Moon, Saguaro Lake, Arizona"

Phoenix, US

A couple of shots while waiting for last night's perigee moon to appear, and then one of the moon itself. All taken hand-held from the boat.

Great shots Russ. I like 2 & 3 the best. Interesting that the moon was yellow in so many different places. I've seen pictures from here in Ohio, Oregon and now yours in Arizona and they are all yellow.

Thanks, Dave. I tripped hundreds of exposures last night and came away with these three, and admittedly, #1 is a borderline throwaway. Shooting low-light scenes from a boat is challenging, to say the least. It really makes you really appreciate what a tripod brings to the table. I played with the WB a bit on the moon shot to test different color treatments, but ultimately I thought the yellow looked most pleasing.

BTW, I really liked your Rockbridge shots. You've really mastered the blending in PS. Did you exchange the D800 for the D800E, or have you found a purpose for both?

Yeah! #3 is the keeper for me, nice planning and patience.

Very nice work on all three.

Wow! I'd like to have the same "borderline throw-away" images as you, mate!

But of course, 3 is the keeper of the night... although I'd be tempted to clone out the branches on the bottom left of the moon.

Cheerio,

Thanks, Olivier. I have the same temptation to remove the branches from the lower left of the moon. They certainly don't add anything worthwhile to the image. My only concern is whether I could leave the patterns of the moon's surface looking natural after the cloning. I'm not sure I could. Also, I'd have to maintain the perfectly smooth, curved edge of the moon. Delicate surgery, but it might be worth a try.

Okay, here it is. It wasn't as difficult as I'd feared, and it definately looks better after a bit of "moonscaping". Thanks for the suggestion.

Russ, these are fantastic. I am so envious with the clear skies ... ours were shrouded in cloud. #3 is a WOW factor I love the the tree silhouette. Thanks for sharing

Thanks, Karen. It was a nice early summer evening out on the boat. And that "tree" in silhouette is actually a saguaro cactus. Here in the Sonoran Desert, they're pretty easy to come across. I like to use them like you would use palm trees; always a nice element in an image to convey the local flavor.
