"Saguaros"

Phoenix, US

I went out hiking in the desert north of Scottsdale but the storm that passed through Friday night didn't permit any good sunrise light. It was too windy for any kind of macro work and even the saguaros were moving in the breeze. Here are a pair of the same set of cacti. The tallest I estimated at about 10 meters. This area is untouched by any fires I can recall in the past 40 years or so and has a really nice variety of flora.

Great images Dean!

From the little I know about saguaros the big boy in the middle with the unbelievably tall branches must be very old but still in its prime.

Thanks, Ernesto. The large ones are quite striking. These could be about 150 year old or so. The little one in the foreground is probably about 10 - 15 years old. They don't even begin to flower until their mid thirties.

Thanks for the comments. You should have some great saguaro hunting around Tucson. I hope you have a great trip. The weather is starting to warm up nicely and some many things are beginning to bloom in the desert now.

Just make sure you don't hunt saguaros with a shotgun.... http://www.snopes.com/horrors/freakish/saguaro.asp

I remember once years ago when some vandal shot a BIG Saguaro down with a shotgun and it fell on him and killed him. Fitting results kinda. I remember the event from the local papers.

Very cool, Dean. We stopped at Saguaros NP a few weeks ago but I don't think I got any shots as good as these.
