"Seaman's Hut"

Westleigh, AU

This shot is of Seaman's Hut in the Australian high country. It was built in 1929 as an emergency shelter after two skiers, Seaman and Hayes, lost their lives in a blizzard near in 1928. The hut was built with money from Seaman's parents. I think Hayes might have been an American.

Mt Kosciuszko is hidden behind the rocky outcrop of the Etheridge Range above the hut.

Nice image, Robert. I love the angle you have chosen for this shot. I find it difficult to take a photo where you can communicate the steepness of the slope when shooting uphill but you have given me a nice sense of what it is like to be there with your balanced composition and the trail winding up the mountain.

Thanks guys,

Actually the hut could be a bit further into the photo I think and one day I might try to clone out the two walkers.

The track is not as steep as it looks. It used to be the road up the mountain and it is still used by 4-WD parks maintenance vehicles so the grades are fairly easy.

Cheers,
Robert

Hi Robert, this is a very nice view, especially with those rocks in the foreground. I must say I was confused when I first saw this because title had made me expect a coastal scene . But then it was all clear when I read the description.

Bill,

Yes, I guess the name is a bit confusing. The high country contains a lot of old huts, many built by cattlemen in a time when the area was used for summer grazing. After the Snowy Mountains (hydro-electric) Scheme started in the early 50s livestock were moved out and the entire area became a national park.

Re the rocks - this is all granite country and the place is full of rocks that have been picked up by glaciers then dumped when they melted. So there is a lot of moraine around.

If they were skiing there, there must have been a lot of snow depth.
I like the deep blue of the sky; you don't see that here without a polarizer
unless you get up on one of the high passes, ten thousand feet or so.

Happy Shooting!
