The Aeolians are a chain of volcanic islands off the northeast coast of Sicily. Stromboli, an active volcano, is the most well known. These shots are taken on the island named Vulcano, a supposedly inactive volcano. As you'll see, there's a bit less concern with walking near or even over steam vents than you might expect. It looks like you were in a hot spot! I presume that the yellow stuff in photo #2 is sulfur.

This is indeed sulfur. However, at the high temperature at this location sulfur forms long needle-shaped crystals which are only stable at elevated temperatures. When I was there many years ago, I took some of these sulfur crystals, but they reverted within a few hours to the stable low temperature form...

These are nice shots, they give a good impression of this rather unique place.
