"My Glacier Shots"

Sammamish, US

David's shots from Glacier are great, and he keeps goading me to post some images from my stop there not too long back. I haven't had time to get them up on my own site yet (really do need to do that I know), but here's three of them in the mean time.

The first is a classic image from St. Mary Lake, and the second is from Two Medicine. The third is one of the residents up near Logan Pass.

Thanks folks.

I was really fighting the weather the whole time I was in Glacier so I know I'll have to get back there, but I did end up with a couple of nice sunrises. The Two Medicine shot is actually a copy of an idea from Art Wolfe. I can't find it on his site right now but it's in his gallery here in Seattle. I camped there and spent an hour or two the day before in the rain trying to find the spot based on my memory of his image. To take is, I nearly had to lay with my face in the water but did come out nicely in the end. I have a whole series as the sun came up that morning. Shortly after, the clouds came back and it rained again. Because of the weird weather, I like my clouds better than in Art's version. I love that you can see their color reflected in the water *on top of* the rocks in the water.

The St. Mary one I again had plenty of time in the rain to find a place (not the marked Wild Goose pullout either but just west of there) where the island, trees and reflection would fit together well. It would be worth going there again later in the year when the sun rises more due east. As it was, it rose so far north that the colors miss the hills on the right hand side completely (this was looking essentially west so the right hand side is north).

The Mountain goat was a fortunate accident. I was up at Logan Pass the evening before this hoping for some sunset on the peaks (which only barely happened), but I turned around and there was this lone goat standing next to me. I didn't see or hear him come up, he was just there. Just the two of us with no one -- man or goat -- nearby. Until then, I had only seen them far, far away up the hillsides and had only bad shots as evidence of them. Needless to say, shot a bunch of him that evening but it was dark enough that they didn't work too well. Strangely, the next morning after shooting the St. Mary shot I went back up to the pass and he was still there, this time with better light! Everybody coming up from West Glacier stopped seeing me and him there and got out there cameras too. It was quite the spectacle.

Very nice !
I planned three weeks in Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Tetons next month. But when I see your stunning pictures, it could be that I'll spent my whole time in Glacier .

Cheers,

Thnnks Phil. I was only there for less than a week, and it rained (or snowed!) most of the time. I did have two nice sunrises though.

You should also spend a few days on the north side of the border of Glacier. While there we met a fellow from Germany that just spent 5 weeks walking the trail from Jasper National Park (Canada) down to Glacier National Park (USA). All he had was a small manual camera with 35mm lens and the last of his Kodak 64. I think he was unhappier about the last roll of his 64 than reaching the end of his adventure.

There are several options to get between the two parks other than walking (normal 2 day hike) from Waterton Lake townsite to Logan Pass. We were told that the griz encounters have been rare this year

A well deserved FLUMP!

The color at Two Medicine is magnificient.

As for the goat, seeing one w/o a pair of 10x50's
is simply amazing.

Good stuff, Bob.

Nice shots Bob.

I may be traveling to Glacier next month and I was wondering if you saw much of last year's fire in the park.

On the west side of the park, yes, but it was not obvious at all in most of the park.

Thanks. After posting I also saw David's thread and comments on the fire. I hope I make it this year as I understand the glaciers are fading fast.

Bob - of course, they're all nice, and the mountain goat is very well done. But, #2 is beautiful. I can just imagine what that will look like as a big print. Gorgeous colors, replicated in sky and water. And you prove yourself again to be the "interesting foreground" master.
