"Yellowstone/Glacier Park"

Philadelphia and New Castle, US

I am hoping to get out to Yellowstone and Glacier Natl. Parks the last couple weeks of June. Having never been there, I'm wide open to suggestions for photographic vistas, etc. Also, feel free to suggest time of day for any place in particular.

Wow. The possibilities are endless.

You might start by getting the PhotoTraveler guidebooks for both parks (and maybe Grand Teton as well). I've found these to be a great resource for an area I'm not yet familiar with.

Bob,

thanks for that link! In the past I have found that any new place requires at least two visits: The first one to get familiar with the area and what you can find there. The second (or third, fourth etc) to actually get some half decent pictures.

These guides look like they may cut down on the learning curve. I am going to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan this summer and I think I'll get their guide for the UP.

Thanks again!

There's also the Photograph America newsletter. Some of their back issues can be worth picking up before a trip, or you can subscribe and get them all as they come out

Thanks Bob on the tip for Photograph America. I knew about the Photo Traveler, but not this one. It will help in my first trip to th Colorado Rockies.

I second bobj's suggestion regarding the Tetons - beautiful place, with some relatively easy hikes for people lugging photo equipment. I've never been to Glacier, but here are my hot spots -

Yellowstone - Fishing bridge sunrise or sunset; geyser basin, Mammoth, firehole area, Artist's point, and the falls gorges

Tetons - Jackson Lake at dawn with Tetons in the background, Oxbow Bend at sunset, Wilson Creek Road early in the morning or late in the afternoon for bears, the main road through the park early in the morning for elk, Bradley Lake hike. The Jenny Lake hike to Inspiration point was a nice hike, but not all that great photographically.

Have fun, and try not to yell at the crowds. We were there in mid-September and it was great - from what I've heard, June is a big family vacation month.

25 mi S of Yellowstone Park is the very photogenic Grand Tetons
70 mi N of Glacier Park is the Icefields Pkwy Banff--Jasper 160 mi

If I were coming from 'nearby' Philadelphia I would definitely add these natural wonders to the trip. If you are fly/driving this would be a very comfortable photo trip. Drove/photoed this route with my wife several years ago--excellent wildlife/nature/landscape images.

As mentioned the Photo Traveller guides you would want are:

Canadian Rockies $13.95
Glacier Waterton N.P $11.95
Yellowstone N.P. $9.95
Grand Teton N.P. $7.95

Take a look at www.phototraveler.com, excerpts from the guides are viewable.

Take 30+ Sunscreen and a broad brimmed hat (NIkonian). Yellowstone sits at 7000 ft avg. and the UV is full force.
There are several excellent Canadian Hostels (and Lodges) along the Icefield Pkwy.

Have a great trip Irivng

P.S. Anyone out there with suggestions for my trip to Alaska May-June?
Mainly, what I should not overlook!
Thanks

If you go to Yellowstone and are willing to walk a mile or more at anyplace other than the main geyser basins, you will find that there is lots to look at and almost nobody around. In the main basins there will be crowds. At things you can drive right up to there will be crowds, but most people never venture into the rest of the park.

Awesome place. Artists Point is the most beautiful place on earth, IMHO.

Jeff - everything looks wonderful around sunrise and you'll see the most wildlife then. Early morning is also best for the geysers (nicely backlit), but for the pools it is better to wait til midday when the sun is high in the sky and shines deep into them, revealing all the beautiful colours. As Yellowstone and the Tetons are quite busy, I have found most wildlife at Glacier NP. One morning we saw 11 bears over a period of two hours there, some of them with cubs.

I wouldn't mind going back there myself...
