"1-3mm difference in the wide end ?"

Tampere, FI

Hello,

In current market there are wide angle zooms from 17...20 to 35. At this point I'm thinking to buy 19-35 zoom. How big is the difference between 17 & 19 or let say 19 & 20 ? I read somewhere that those millimeters in wide end do really count, what are your opinions ?

If you are referring to the 18-35 and 17-35 Nikkors, then from an angle of view perspective, the 1mm difference is not going to be noticable. Those lenses have more important differences than that.

There is a noticable difference between the 20mm and 24mm primes, so I guess 3-4mm is noticable below 28mm or so.

1mm isn't a big deal, but two is certainly significant if you want maximum angle of view.

18mm has 90 degrees horizonatal view. 20mm has 84 degrees.

The six degrees of difference is greater than the angle of view difference between a 300mm lens and a 600mm lens. As with anything, how meaningful the differences are to you will depend on what you need and want.

Hello,

Thank you for answers. I chose the compromise with 19-35 (Tamron) lense. It should fill all my landscape needs for a while.

I have the Tamron 19-35 lens as well. A friend of mine has a 20mm Nikkor F2.8 prime lens, and in my amateur tests, I could definately see quite a difference between the 20mm Nikkor and the 19mm tamron. I dont have the tools to measure the field of view difference, but it was more than noticable. The tamron also has noticably less barrel distortion, which was a nice surprise.
