"World's Greatest Scenics"

BE

Nikonians are spread all over the globe, and I suppose they also travel a lot. That's why I start this tread. I want all of you to show us world's greatest scenics; landscapes you shot while travelling, or maybe just in front of your kitchen window. Show us how beautiful this world is. But please, only landscapes.

I'll start with a picture of the Vermilion Lakes near Banff town, Alberta, Canada. This one was shot from the roadside in the late afternoon, when the lakes are backlit. When the sky is clear, it's better to be there early in the morning. The area is also interesting for watching wildlife.

Regards,
Philip

Both nice shot and nice coastline Mark. Thanks for posting. If we only had such a coastline here in Belgium, I would go more often there.

How about California? Lots of beautiful scenics and an unbelievable variety of oppertunity at any time of the year. Oops! am I bragging, sorry, but it's a really nice state for photography. Here is a shot of Convict in the fall. It's in the Owens valley behind Yosemite Valley. It was taken with a Nikomat Ftn & 35mm Nikor lens.

Philip:
Thanks for the kind comment. This is my first attachement in a thread and I guess I didn't quite know what I was doing. They are all the same picture. The one that is shown. It is "Convict Lake" I will try to post some others soon.
Again thanks!

My wife took this shot of me on the rocks on our 1988 trip to CA. I probably had the FE2 and stuck her with the FE. Nice rocks!

It's a really bad scan of a K64 slide. I need a good film scanner

I don't know what to think. Aren't there any Nikonians living in Asia, aren't Nikonians traveling to Asia, or are there just no great scenics in Asia? Come on, I know someone must have something somewhere? Well, show it.

Hi everyone,

I don't think any Colorado pictures have been posted yet, so I hope you don't mind me posting a few. All of these were taken with my N80 and 28-105mm.
The first one is of Royal Gorge, the world's highest suspension bridge at 1,053ft. high. This was taken with Provia 100f and converted to BW.
The second picture was taken at Rocky Mtn. Nat'l Park. This is Moraine Park within RMNP. Taken with Kodak E100VS.
The third was taken at Echo Lake, on the way to the summit of Mt. Evans, near Denver, CO. Taken with Kodak E100VS and converted to BW.
The last one was taken at Horseshoe Park, also within Rocky Mtn. Nat'l Park. Taken at sunset using Kodak E100VS.
Hope this isn't too much and hope you enjoy them!!

Pictures 2 and 3 remind me of Alaska. Is the landscape in Colorado somewhat comparable to Alaska?

Thanks a lot to all for posting, but ... This can't be all great scenics of the world.
Until now we haven't seen anything yet from Iceland or Spitsbergen, we missed the Vic falls and the Grand Canyon, nobody showed us his Antarctica pics (OK maybe no Nikonian has ever been on Antarctica, but you must have seen the rest of the world, no?), no Titicaca or Inle lake, no Machu Picchu, Ankhor What or Eastern Islands, no Greek Meteoras or Cyclades. No Skeleton Coast, no Namib Desert. Don't tell me no one has ever been there. And don't tell me all your Tuscany or Provence shots were ruined by the lab.

Remember that 9999+ Nikonians are waiting to see those great scenics.

Philip

When in Venice, try walking away from the usual tourist paths, alot of beauty is to be discovered in the less crowded streets. That's exactly what I did.

Well, since nobody wants to reveal their secret photo hideouts, I'll post another picture.

Ortlergruppe seen from the Passeier Tal, Südtirol, Italy.

Oh, Mark, with this picture the nuisance was I had to delete all the hikers, trekkers, yeti's, wolves, bears, etc with photoshop which took me days

Thanks for posting Alfons. This looks more a great scenic to me than the streets of Venice. Do you really believe that nobody wants to reveal their secret places. Too bad. There's no danger in posting pictures about Skeleton Coast or Umbria, because everybody knows these are photogenetic places. Maybe we need to give the good example, and post some more scenics ourselves.

Concerning your huge photoshop workload, I only can repeat what I've said before: for nature photography, you need a lot of patience. If you would have waited for the right moment, you would have had less photoshop retouching than you had right now. I explain : first, the bears would have eaten or chased the hikers and trekkers, and then the Yetis would have eaten the wolves and chased the bears. Being tired from eating wolves and chasing bears, Yetis usually take a nap somewhere out of sight. You see, some great action photo opportunities, and no more work with photoshop

Philip

Are there any nikonian mountaineers here? Has nobody ever climbed the Matterhorn, the Mont Blanc, the Monte Rosa, maybe even the famous Eiger Nordwand or other 3500m+ mountains?

I'm asking because I have the book "Viertausender der Alpen" which has some superb pictures of not only the mountain itself, but also the awesome view it provides.

Not exactly in the Alps, but definitely a 4000+. This picture was made in the Northern Cordillera Blanca, from the Portachuelo Pass (4750m), while I was enjoying the Llanganuco to Santa Cruz trail. I'm not shure about what peak it is, but I suppose it must be the Huandoy, who has several peaks (6395m, 6356m, 6166m and 6070m).

Beautiful! Did you use a polarizer when shooting that pic? I'm asking because the gletscher isn't washed out and the colors are nicely saturated. I was stupid enough to buy a polarizer after I came back from vacation...

The only equipment I took with me was a Nikkormat FT2, a Nikkor AIS 50mm f2 (with a UV filter) and a Komura 2x converter. I used all the equipment for this photo. The film was Ektachrome ISO 100.

Another good Canadian park is Quetico Provincial Park in western Ontario. It sits just north of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

The first picture is a sunrise on Basswood Lake. The second is sunset on Bayley Bay.

Glad to be providing more Asian perspective. I hope to get better quailty scans soon.

Exposure: 1) f8 1/125, 2) f8 1/500
Lens: Nikkor 28mm f3.5 Ais + UV filter, Film: Superia Reala, Camera: f-601, Scanner: unknown model at 150dpi

The labs here offer to put high res images on a cdrom for a few dollars. I'll try it out next time.

Sunrise over the Himalayas, Nepal. You start out from Pokhara (about 200km west of Kathmandu) at about 4.00am and drive part way then climb to the summit of Sarangkot, a "hill" across the valley from the Annapurna range. The Annapurnas actually ring this mountian, Machupuchre, or the "Fishtail Mountain".

Philip -

I was there at sunset and sunrise, and the sunrise was much better. The eroded forms seem to align better with the sunrise. Also, looking the other way at sunset reveals some unsightly mining ponds in the eastern distance. If I had a choice, I might visit during the winter months for clearer air. There was a lot of dust brought up by the warm early summer winds when I was there in early June.

Thanks for starting this thread!

David

Hmm. It looks like the world's greatest landscapes all include mountains. I'm not certain I can give you one of the world's greatest but here's one I consider one of Obregon's greatest. Less spectacular than mountains but more soothing. Shot at the Dead Creek Wild Life Refuge in Vermont.

Hi Obregon,
One of my favourite places that has no mountains is the semi-desert which formes the mighty Kalahari. This picture shows a dry riverbed and an old tree, which was struck by lightning. The dry riverbed is one of the best places in the world to see cheetahs hunting.

Well firstly I must apologise, this picture was NOT taken with a Nikon. I took it with my Contax SLR but I thought it would fit in with this thread pretty well and its NOT of any mountains.

This is Lizard Point, the southernmost tip of England (in Cornwall). Provided you go at the right time of year, you can get some spectacular views... well I didn't go at such a great time, it was hazy and very sunny!

I come from New Zealand but am living in England. I went back for a trip about a year ago and forgot how beautiful it could be.
I can't seem to post pictures to this site, so the link below shows a beach on the Coromandel Penninsula very near the top at Port Jackson. I drove all day to get there for about 2 minutes of light like this. Then the heavens opened again

Cheers

Thanks for your picture Chris.

We got a lot of beautiful scenics from all around, but still nothing from Asia. I begin to believe there isn't any great location in Asia worth making a picture. Or am I wrong? Well, show it to us ...

Philip,
Here is one from Middle Himalayas, India, Asia. Took this picture with my 1967 Oldie Nikon F, while on a skiing course. I like shooting into the light, so positioned the camera in the shadow of the tree and with some deliberate underexposure got this result. Someday hope get a better scanner, I'd like hear your coments too.

Gops, I like the atmosphere in this backlit picture, and the way the sun is hidden behind one of the trees, but I suppose someone who goes skiing in the Himalayas, and mentioned 'treks' as his hobby must be able to show us a little bit more Himalaya than this. Come on ...

Sure Philip, here is one way above the tree line "dawn at Katling Glacier" Garhwal, western Himalayas. I remember, this shot was taken about 05:30hrs, it was my turn that morning to make tea for the group. when it began to dawn, i could not help but shamelessly dump the tea making responsibility on to my friend and run with the tripod to expose a few frames. This one is the first of the series.
More to follow....
Hope you all like it

Hi Phillip and everyone out there,
As promised earlier, the trail continues.... here is "Masar Tal" (Tal-in local language means lake)at 4700mts. The first time ever I felt the altitude sickness. There was a good side to that sickness too. Apart from the headache, I felt like as I if had two strong rounds of Stolichnya Vodka. I took this picture in the evening after setting up the camp. Shortly after it started raining, then snowing through the night. Not a minute of sleep we got as the the snow storm triggred rock falls all around us. The bad weather forced us to stay put for more than 24 hours inside our tents.
The heap of stones in the foreground is formed by guides who accompany trekking groups, they pray and do small ofernings like coconuts or dried fruits, which they carry all the way from the village where the trek starts. The prayer is meant for the safety success of the trip. The next stretch is sixteen kilometer that runs through dangerous loose boulders, two high altitude lakes, crevaces and a pass at 5890 meters. Camping is impossible in this strech.
Again the bad weather did a good thing to us in disguise. Because we were force to stay put for 24 hrs, it gave us the time to rest, muster all the energy for the assault.
Hope i did not bore you guys.......more pics from the trail to follow.

Here's a shot that I took a few weeks ago on a trip to Mount St. Helens. That's the volcano in the upper left hand corner, and Coldwater lake in the foreground. I don't know if it's quite "World's Greatest" material, but I like the shot.

Shot with my N65 & 28-105 on Fuji Reala.

Sorry, I probably should have included that info...

Mount St. Helens is in the South West corner of Washington State in the U.S. It erupted on May 18, 1980. If you're interested, there's more info on the site here.

Thanks. I actually remember sitting at my desk in school when the teacher came in and told us that a volcano had erupted in the U.S. (At that time I was living in Michigan.) We all went down to the assembly room and watched the news reports on TV. It's still an amazing site 22 years later.

Here's another image showing a little more of the destruction.

Here's an old picture I made after a trek in the Cordillera Blanca in Perú, back in 1980.

This is the place where Yungay used to be. In the background, you can see the 6768 m high Nevado Huascarán, Perú's highest peak and the forth peak of the American continent. It is one of the most imposing summits in the world.

In 1970, an earthquake-induced rock and snow avalanche on the Huascarán, buried the towns of Yungay and Ranrahirca. The total death toll was 66000 people. The avalanche started as a sliding mass of glacial ice and rock about 1 km wide and 1,6 km long. The avalanche swept about 18 kms to the village of Yungay at an average speed of more that 160 km an hour. The fast-moving mass picked up glacial deposits and by the time it reached Yungay, it is estimated to have consisted of about 80 million cubic yards of water, mud, and rocks.
Through the clouds, you can still see a huge area without snow.

The only remains of the town are a piece of wall of the cathedral and 4 palm trees of the former plaza de armas.

Actually Philip, the old Kodachrome is still beautiful with high contrast. And that's my problem! When the rich blues of the lake were faithful on the screen when compared to the slide, I couldn't see any of the detail in the shadows on the back of the backpacks. I'm still only 2 weeks down the road on my scanning adventures and because so many of my slides are backlit and/or high contrast situations I'm anxious to improve. Maybe later on tonight I'll give it another try and re-post it.

Thanks for the look!

If it's Kodachrome, then indeed the colours still should be good. Maybe you should select the two hikers before lightening so the rest of the picture remains as it looks on the original slide.

Here's another try. I took original scan (2400 res.) and in Photoshop Elements selected auto levels. Then I resized it (400 x 600) and used unsharp mask (100%, .5, 0).

On my monitor it's sharper and less hazy than 1st rendition. Also the mid distance hills and shoreline areas are more pleasing to my eye. Hikers are now more silohuette (less detail on their packs).

Thanks again for your comments.

Nice pics!

I just put the Adirondacks on top of my list of long weekend getaways!

Although everbody told me otherwise - but could not show me a picture - I considered the Adirondacks as a less attractive place according to my prefercences. I prefer real moutains like the Rockies or the European Alps and I thought the Adirondacks would be just a hilly countryside.

But your pictures show at least a mountainlike appearance

Talking about old film. I have to dig out some 10 year old pics on consumer Fuji slide film. They show an amazing grain size...

Have a nice day

Just brought an old slide back to life with the Nikon Cool ScanIV and ROC. 25 years ago. First shot at Mt Whitney in California. Camping in the desert after leaving car in Lone Pine and heading for the hills. Major storm brewing in the morning. Snowed like heck over the next few days and I froze my buns off but had a great time.

Damn, you can almost feel the electricity sparking from those clouds!
I wouldn't want to be at a peak in that weather!

Btw, did you ever witnessed elmsfire? Mountaineers often play Thor by swinging their axe above thier head when a storm is coming up. Also, peaks or sharp ridges can emit aurora like light.

Does it? Well the weather was bad that day (no pure blue sky).
It's taken from the heights of the Island of Porquerolles looking toward the continent at Giens and Hyčres with the inland mountains behind... (it's not very far from Toulon on the map)!

This is a repost, I've tidied up the scan a little with GIMP. Still not the same as the original but much better.

Ah yes, the fjords of Norway. The famous fjords of Norway. I heard a lot about them, from friends who went there.

And by showing this picture, you made me add one more name on my very long and still gronwing "Places to Visit" list. I believe that going there by boat is the best way to enjoy the scenery?

Thanks for posting Jin.

Philip

Philip,
The picture was taken on a rather good "Norway in a Nutshell" tour which takes you by bus, boat and special train through some of the more picturesque parts of western Norway - from Bergen to Myrdal from where you can take a fast train back to Oslo.
I think to see Norway properly though, it is well worth going on a camping trip and walking through some of the famous national parks. I will definitely go back there - one day but not in the midsummer. The light is too harsh for my beloved Velvia!

OK Philip, I couldn't resist your Vic Falls and Namib Desert challenge, so here they are. Both taken with a F80, AF 24 f/2.8, Fuji Velvia.

Wow, great pictures Ted. I knew there were still great pictures that hadn't been posted. Thanks for doing so. I especially like the Vic Falls shop.

I bet lots of people out there still have lots of other great photos that would be nice to show us here. Come on, we're waiting.

Philip
