Just down the road from my mainland residence is a wonderful wetland area, full of birds, insects, butterflies and reptiles (including snakes!). Whilst wandering along the boardwalk and for once looking up, I noticed the branches of a melaluca looked different - "feathery" even. Closer inspection revealed, Mum and two younger Tawny Frogmouths.
Although sharing similar features to an owl ie nocturnal, large eyes and soft feathers for silent flying, they are from the nightjar family and are more closely related to Kingfishers. Frogmouths are insectivorous and their eyes are located more to the side.
I was extremely chuffed to have seen these guys in their natural habitat. Unfortunately, Mum was higher up the tree and almost impossible to photograph.
Thanks for looking! cheers - Karen
