"Snowy cardinal"

Bristol, US

I was passing an upstairs window at home today when I spotted a flash of red in our cedar tree. It was this guy trying to keep warm.

It is 4 degrees Fahrenheit here and gusty, following an overnight snowstorm. I grabbed the camera with my 70-300mm VR on it and got off three shots before he skipped off deeper into the branches. I never even had time to adjust ISO or other settings.

Thanks, Kip, I appreciate your comments. I keep the feeders well-stocked, but I think this bird just had his feathers puffed up to keep warm.

The combination of red in the evergreens and snow is lovely. They are a beautiful bird with a lovely song.

I can't imagine what you would have adjusted to make it better. The focus, colors and contrast make it a beaut! Christmas card material.
