January Contest - Small groups

This month’s challenge from Scott Ashley is “Small groups”

This forum has seen many outstanding captures of individual animals, and also some great images of flocks and herds of many animals. This month's contest will be for the in-between—not individual portraits or large numbers, but SMALL GROUPS of three to 10 animals. Think of shots such as a family grouping, a small pride of lions, birds with nesting young, young animals interacting, meerkat groups, a mother with multiple offspring, predators feeding on a carcass, etc.

Obviously one of the challenges of small groups is getting all or as many animals as possible looking good at the same time. So show us what you've got! Captive animals okay so long as they're in a natural-looking environment and it's not immediately obvious that they're in captivity.

Enjoy the challenge, and share your shots!

Participating in our monthly contests can help us to become better photographers. We can see and learn from all of the entries as our members showcase their best work each month.
These monthly contests are the preliminary rounds for the Annual Nikonians Photo Contest where you have the opportunity to win attractive prizes and have your images highlighted in the Winners Galleries and published in the eZine.
The top images will be selected by the winner of the previous months challenge and will be included in a poll for members to vote for the winning photo. Please keep in mind that images will be selected based on image quality, subject matter, relevance to the theme, and creativity just to name a few.

The winning image will be added to the Wildlife Contest Winners Gallery. The winner will be recognized in our weekly newsletter and will receive a printable Certificate of Photographic Achievement.

I look forward to seeing how you fulfill this challenge!

Good luck!!!

RULES:
-- Post up to 5 images but only one image per post
-- This is a contest – Please present your best, portfolio quality, work
-- Include shooting info so we can learn from each other
-- Previously posted images are welcome but not previous contest winners.
-- When posting please do so by hitting the ‘reply’ link below this top post, not the reply link to another post.
-- Include a title in the subject line
-- Capture must be shot with a Nikon camera and any lens
-- Comments are welcome but NO public critiquing, i.e., how to make it better. This is a contest so PM's are a better way to offer feedback
-- WARNING Posts that do not meet the spirit of the challenge will not be selected as finalists and may be periodically removed by the moderators without notice.

Image was taken a few weeks ago while out scouting for Eagles in Sterling IL. It was very cold, well below 0*. Wind chills were -40 for the day. This explains the reason for all the moisture/fog coming off the water, it was really thick in spots and clear in others. The mostly clears skies let the early morning light in areas that were not that thick.

Mountain goat kids have an inborn desire to play "king of the hill" on boulders. These four were getting in one last round of pushing and shoving as the setting sun spotlit the boulder they were playing on. The scene lasted a few seconds and was gone.

Thanks—it was like a spotlight about 20-30 feet wide shining underneath a cloud bank and through a notch in the nearby mountains. I'd already given up shooting for the day because the light had gone, then this light came through just long enough for me to grab a few frames. Definitely some of the most amazing light I've ever seen, and to light up just this one spot where the kids were playing!

I thought about calling this photo "A Chorus Line" because that's what it looked like with the spotlight on the group!

The pair on the left were swimming alone when the male on the right landed with them. He started his mating moves, hoping to steal her away. Didn't work this time. Taken today in the beautiful sunshine and 50 degree weather. WOOT!

After the landing on the frozen river Korana (with the frozen weir in the background) the swans walked gracefully to the only patch of river that had not frozen (for a swim).
The photo was taken by me standing in the middle of the river that turned solid!
